Call of the Wilde: Tampa Bay Lightning take easy 4-1 win over the ... (Globalnews.ca)

The Canadiens have two first-round draft picks and both are in position, at the moment, to be involved in the lottery. It’s an intriguing idea because no doubt Lafreniere in a Montreal uniform would excite the fan base. It is impossible to know who progresses and who does not, but there are so many high-quality players that just the math alone favours the Canadiens. The acquisition of Kirby Dach for what amounted to the 13th pick overall in sending Alexander Romanov to Long Island was a stroke of brilliance. This season, it should be thrilling again to see what the partnership can achieve as the trading deadline approaches. However, this is also about a lack of opportunity where Lafreniere is still on the third line with gusts to fourth line duty. The Canadiens were overmatched by an extremely good and experienced hockey team, so there’s not much to pile on about when fans already know the story of what is lacking. The rest, so far, and it is early in their careers, seem to be all third pair defenders, but they could easily develop into more. Barron is a terrific skater, but needs to show more physicality as the NHL level. It’s the first time in franchise history that Montreal has had five rookies on the blue line in one game. Kaiden Guhle, Arber Xhekaj, Jordan Harris, Jonathan Kovacevic, and for the first time this season Justin Barron all on the blue line in Tampa Bay. Stop four found Montreal dropping under .500 for the road trip with a loss in Tampa Bay.

Recap: Lightning keep the home fires cooking with a 4-1 win over ... (Raw Charge)

After a long rest the Tampa Bay Lightning came out and dominated the Montreal Canadiens in their first game following the holiday break.

The Lightning killed off one more penalty (and head one more shorthanded chance) before the final horn sounded. The Lightning didn’t allow a shot on Vasilevskiy, and following the kill, the top line put another goal behind Allen. High danger chances were 13-5 in favor of the Bolts, and that includes the one Montreal power play (where the Lightning out shot them 2-1 and outchanced them 3-1). The top line (and Sergachev) had Allen dancing around the crease within 60 seconds, but he made the saves on Sergy and Kucherov. At 5v5 the Lightning outshot them 11-3, outchanced them 11-2, the high-danger chances were 5-1 in favor of the Bolts as well. Still, with as red hot as the top line has been, it was only a matter of time till they found another goal. Point took up his spot in the middle of the ice and Nikita Kucherov found him. He was first to the loose puck and backhanded a pass to a wide open Alex Killorn who slid it under Jake Allen’s pads for the opening goal. The Lightning have traditionally struggled a bit after long layoffs, with sloppy passing and disjointed rushes, and just looking out of sync in general. Tampa Bay was moving quickly in all three zones, not letting Montreal have too much open ice when they did have the puck. That was not the case against the Canadiens.
