Housing costs have soared. Are smaller dwellings the answer ... (CBC.ca)

Housing costs continue to climb in Nova Scotia and some say encouraging smaller homes is part of the solution.

And though moving to a smaller home has involved downsizing, she said being able to choose a house that's the right size for her budget has been worth it. He said while small dwellings aren't for everyone — he encourages potential buyers to come check out his tiny home and shipping container dwellings to see if they think it will work for them— they could help some people for whom the average house is out of reach. I would not have been able to sustain myself." As housing costs continue to climb in Nova Scotia, officials and service providers hope smaller homes could be part of the solution. As cities look to fit more people onto existing parcels of land, Green said downsizing might be the answer. "[Tiny homes] are less intensive use of the land. With housing costs as they currently stand, Mullins worries about the impact on families. So we really want to shift that and use that land more efficiently." They also changed rules so that mobile homes, including tiny homes, could be considered single-family dwellings which allows them to be put in more places. Two recent bylaw amendments in the HRM aim to encourage this shift, Green said. Mullins did some research and purchased a mini-home in Hubbards west of Halifax for $180,000, sight unseen. Mullins grew up in Halifax, but spent the bulk of her life in Montreal.

From blue ice cream bananas to yuzu, this Lunenburg fruit grower ... (CBC.ca)

In a large greenhouse not far from Lunenburg, N.S., hundreds of unusual plants of all shapes and sizes are getting used to their new life in Nova Scotia.

These are fruits that the executive director of the Nova Scotia Fruit Growers' Association said she hasn't found at other plant nurseries in the province. Her very first exotic plant was a pawpaw, a species native to eastern North America that's about the size of a mango. She transformed her hobby farm on B.C.'s Sunshine Coast, located north of Vancouver, into one of the area's few exotic nurseries. "You don't have to bring things in from far away so you can grow it locally, which is great, right?" "It cuts down on the carbon footprint, too." Clarke hopes to show Nova Scotians that even the most unusual plants can find a home here.

Some believe that the Knights Templar play a major role in the mysterious Oak Island legend.

As a result, the board ordered that Nova Scotia Power could hold back $2 million per month to pay for replacement energy if less than 90 per cent of the expected power from Labrador isn’t delivered. The board was told in February that about 19 per cent of the expected electricity, referred to as the Nova Scotia Block, was delivered between Aug. The review board said the amount will be reflected in Nova Scotia Power’s electricity rates and recovered from customers. 22 decision, the province’s Utility and Review Board approved a request made in August by the subsidiary of Nova Scotia Power that operates the cable called the Maritime Link. The overall decrease includes $1.9 million less for operating and maintenance costs. The review board said the subsidiary “stated that the 2023 forecast is based on its growing experience operating and maintaining the Maritime Link since 2018 and accounts for its continuing efforts to refine, mitigate, and contain costs.” It notes that a marine survey of the link would not be conducted in 2023 as part of cost savings.
