Reporter Bob Condotta grades the Seahawks' loss to the Chiefs (The Seattle Times)

Just when you think you have a handle on what the Seahawks are, they up and surprise you. Here's how Bob Condotta graded the Seahawks' loss to the Chiefs.

Boye Mafe had some good moments, finishing with three tackles and one of what were just two tackles for a loss for the Seahawks. Tariq Woolen saved a touchdown with some blazing catch-up speed on a deep pass to Justin Watson in the first quarter. Godwin Igwebuike also had another good kickoff return — this one of 48 yards — and is averaging 28.3 for the season. But working a little quicker — and Smith being under center more — helped the running game get jump-started in the second half, and the line seemed to play better as the game wore on. But Jason Myers made another field goal and is 27 of 28 this season and the Seahawks again covered kicks well. But the Seahawks might have hoped for more when so much attention was going to Metcalf. He also took the blame for the interception on a pass intended for Goodwin in the fourth quarter, saying he just didn’t throw a good pass. Stone Forsythe saw some snaps as an extra — and eligible — tackle in heavy formations as the Seahawks tried to get their running game going early. But he was held to just one for 10 on two targets in the second half. Smith looked elsewhere for targets on the two fourth-down plays that failed in the second half. He had a few decisions he’d like to have back, notably passing up a run for a sure first down on the first possession of the third quarter to throw a pass to Marquise Goodwin that went incomplete. And Metcalf said he should have gotten both feet in bounds on the pass in the end zone late in the first half.

And it was one that just about knocks the Seahawks out of the race for a playoff spot in the NFC with two games to go. Seahawks Fall To Chiefs, But Know “We Have A Shot Still” (Seahawks.com)

Seahawks players and Pete Carroll know there's still improvements to be made, but they feel good about some of the improvements they showed in the second ...

You have to focus on that one and then you can move on to the next." "We just got to keep going and control what we can control. We have to take care of the football and get the football. For us, we want to fight, and we want to give ourselves those options. "The O-line did a great job the whole game, it was just up to me to be decisive on what hole to hit, and in the second half everything started to open up." Nobody ever thought we would be in this position, anyways, to have the opportunity to go to the playoffs. "So just fix the mistakes and continue to build off of what we did in the second half." "We have to be more efficient," Carroll said. Because we were able to do it all, we could stop them, we could run the football, and we could protect and we could throw it. While that was Seattle's only turnover, it was a costly one—a touchdown there would have made it a one-score game, and the Chiefs answered with an 80-yard touchdown drive that all but put the game out of reach—and it continued a trend of losing the turnover battle that Carroll would really like to see change. It made a big difference and gave us the chance to be in the game." After the game, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said he talked to his team about "how it felt like to play in this setting against a great team like this and how our guys sensed what we were able and capable of doing.

Seahawks RB Kenneth Walker III 'more decisive' against Chiefs (The Seattle Times)

Finally, in the second half of their 15th game of the season, the Seahawks again looked like the ideal of a Pete Carroll-coached team.

You just have to get the ball up and down before the guy gets there.” The ball just has to get up and down before the guy gets there. Smith appeared to have plenty of room to run for a first down and more but instead pulled up and threw to Goodwin at midfield. “I just had to take a knee and catch my breath, but I’m fine.” It was just up to me to be decisive on what hole to hit and in the second half everything started to open up.” “There are so many chances on third downs and early downs to be a factor like he always is. Saturday was just the third regular-season game Seattle has played since 2015 without Tyler Lockett, who had surgery to repair a broken bone in his hand. “They’re a great team, but they’re kind of arrogant in what they do, so we know where the runs are going,” Jefferson said. They also went 80 yards on five pretty easy plays to put the game away in the fourth quarter. But the Chiefs managed 21 rushing yards on nine carries in the second half with no run longer than 5 yards. We were just determined enough to go back out in the second half and make them find out if we were going to run it or not. And as critical as anything was Seattle sticking with the run.

What The Chiefs Said Following Their 24-10 Win Over The Seahawks (Seahawks.com)

Head Coach Andy Reid; QB Patrick Mahomes; Defensive End Frank Clark; Linebacker Willie Gay Jr. Center Creed Humphery; Safety Justin Reid; Wide Receiver Juju ...

We know what we can do (and) we know what we can do better. They call back two – they call this one back today and they called one back the other week and I finally got one so I'm proud of that." HUMPHREY: "They (the coaches) do a heck of a job of coaching us up on it, (telling us) our exact angles and what they need to be so credit to the coaching staff. I mean that's what it is at the end of the day and when the defense is playing like that don't put them in a bad position and try to do whatever you can to put points on the board but don't put the team in a bad position." We're getting ready to play playoff caliber teams (and) if we want to be the team we say we are, we've got to start playing like it." We had a short week so of course we got to get rolling, we got to get the ball rolling faster. We had a tough game in Houston so when you come back you got guys dwelling on it, our coaches do a good job of washing that away from our memory and getting us back into the week. MAHOMES: "Yeah, I mean obviously we don't control our own destiny as far as the one seed but we want to put ourselves in the best position to be at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium as much as possible in the playoffs and that takes us getting better as a team every single week and we play a lot of great teams at the end of the season and how can we get better? So, defense they stepped up, made a lot of big plays and I was just patient enough to get us enough points at the end of the game." Obviously, Travis (Kelce) got lost in space two times in a row where we wanted to throw deep but when they play that deep of coverage hitting Travis over the middle usually is a good thing and he was able to get us down there in the red zone and we were able to punch it in and get the touchdown." MAHOMES: "Yeah I mean that's the great thing is at the receiver position and at the running back position and even the tight end position guys are coming in and making plays happens. But, I was proud of the guys and how they took care of business, and especially on a short week.

The Chiefs proceeded to ice the game following Thornhill's pick, as Kansas City went on 5-play, 80-yard scoring drive that ended in a diving, 3-yard touchdown scramble by Mahomes that effectively put the game out of reach. In terms of injuries, Coach Reid didn't have any news to report following the game. It may seem inconsequential in the context of the final score, but the Chiefs' ability to hold Seattle out of the end zone at the end of the first half was significant. It was the fifth-coldest game at the venue since at least 1994. The first two ended in failed fourth down attempts before safety Juan Thornhill ended the third with his first interception of the season. The score – which pushed Kansas City's lead to 14-0 – was McKinnon's sixth touchdown in his last four games.

Watson has been a valuable depth player this season, but on this day he was a drive-killer for the Chiefs' passing offense. Each of his incompletions was on a drive that ended in a punt or turnover on downs. Sure, Kelce had one early catch he left on the field, and he seemed to blame himself, but that was quickly forgotten as Kelce led all receivers in this game. He scored the game’s first touchdown this week on the little “pop pass” as he weaved through traffic on the way to the end zone. Wide receiver Justin Watson: The Chiefs' passing game was just a bit out of sync today, and many of us noticed too many times when the issue seemed to be at least partially with Watson. Against Seattle, most of them came on one drive in the fourth quarter, when the Chiefs essentially put the game out of reach with a touchdown drive.
