The Oilers made due with a couple of important missing pieces and hope to improve on those solid results with this new-look lineup. Woodcroft continued: "It played itself out, and there's another opportunity as we're returning some people to full health to move the pieces around the chessboard like we like to say, and we got a good response in Dallas. "I thought the game went to a rhythm that we wanted to dictate at," Head Coach Jay Woodcroft said post-game. "Circumstances were what they were, and I think that's part of what makes us who we are as a team is that we can win games in different ways," Woodcroft said. "So I think the rare time when you are the team waiting, you have to take advantage of it and get on them early. "You always complain when you're on the other end of it being on the back-to-back and the team's waiting for you, right?" GDB 35.0 Wrap Up: Oilers get goalie'd, blow a two-goal lead, and ... (Oilers Nation)

It happened again… Final Score: 5-2 Canucks. Welcome to our Oilers game day content presented by NHL lines site Betway! Even though my brain spent the day ...

On the latest episode of Better Lait Than Never, I was talking all things Christmas and how happy I am that Ryan Nugent-Hopkins could not be hotter right now. We will keep you in the league Unfortunately, it was not meant to be for Stu as both he and his teammates just didn’t have their best stuff. Vancouver cashed in on 1-of-2 of their opportunities with the man advantage and I am displeased once again. I say that with all due respect. - I hate you, Collin Delia. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins lost had Horvat initially but lost him for a second, which was all the time he needed to cash in the chance. - JT Miller pulled the Canucks back to within a single goal (2-1) after his shot from the high slot hit Stuart Skinner in the shoulder, popped 10 feet up into the air, and fell softly over the goal line. - As we head into the Christmas break, I just want to say how much I love Klim Kostin. Heading into the third period, I was already feeling salty about the way the second period unfolded and the last thing any of us needed was for the Oilers to drop a game that was supposed to be a layup. With a two-goal lead in their pocket and 40 minutes to play, the Oilers needed to keep the pedal to the floor and shut the door on any kind of Canucks comeback attempt. Even though my brain spent the day telling me that the Oilers should have no problem beating the Canucks tonight, my heart has loved this team since I was a kid, and I can tell you many tales of heartbreak about games that I personally believed that the Oilers should win.

Edmonton Oilers Activate Ryan McLeod (prohockeyrumors.com)

The Oilers have made two roster moves, activating key penalty killer Ryan McLeod and placing Ryan Murray on IR.

In order to clear the roster spot necessary to complete this activation, the Oilers have placed defenseman [Ryan Murray](https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/m/murrary01.html?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&utm_campaign=2022-12-23_hr) on injured reserve. McLeod has been out since November with an undisclosed injury.

Using this information to contravene any law is prohibited. The Over is 22-8-1 in the past 31 games on the road for the Canucks, while cashing in four of the past five games when playing on no rest. The Oilers are in good shape for this reason, too, as they’re either going to face a worn-down Martin or journeyman Collin Delia. However, the Canucks have a terrible history when playing on no rest. The Oilers do come with a little bit of risk, however, and we’re banking on the Canucks to be a little tired. There is no reason to believe the Canucks will tip the scales in their favor here, either, especially playing on zero rest after an emotional and long game last night. This is the second of three meetings in the regular season. Campbell was the guy who secured the bag in the offseason, but he has struggled since arriving in Northern Alberta and has shown no signs of pulling out of his funk. They’ve also covered the puck line of 1.5 in their last five wins. The Canucks snapped out of their offensive funk in a big way, lighting the lamp six times against the Kraken last night. We’ll discuss in our Article content

How Oilers are different yet similar to last season through 35 games (The Athletic)

EDMONTON — A dispiriting 5-2 loss Friday to the Canucks has left the Oilers with the exact same 18-15-2 record that they had through 35 games last season.

[Brett Kulak](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/brett-kulak-zCwY6hQOpC4KTrw7/), who wasn’t acquired until the trade deadline, has replaced the retired Duncan Keith. 6/7 defencemen in [Philip Broberg](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/philip-broberg-HYP6IJv1gBX2YKKM/) (ankle) and [Ryan Murray](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/ryan-murray-i0T2N6YMSsudHJQS/) (back), but those aren’t players who are making or breaking a team’s fortunes. That still means the Oilers need 57 points from here to possibly make the dance. They’ll have to match that 115-point pace over the last 47 games from last season to equal their 104-point output. A win in their following game against the [Flames](https://theathletic.com/nhl/team/flames/) gave Tippett a stay of execution. [Ryan McLeod](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/ryan-mcleod-GhjIEpVRPcNsWEPo/) is back in the lineup — he returned Friday after missing nearly a month with an ankle injury — these Oilers are essentially back to full health minus Kane. Yet, Edmonton is being outscored 11-9 in that situation with him on the ice. The Oilers had a 17-14 advantage through 35 games last season. On the ice for the last 4 Vancouver goals, and among the defensive culprits on at least a couple of them. Overplayed a wide shot on the 3-2 and unable to recover. Made a fine play to clear the zone and send RNH in on a shorthanded breakaway. But took a very bad penalty early in the second that led to a very dangerous Vancouver powerplay. Made a pair of dazzling backhand passes off the spinnarama, the first setting up McDavid’s goal, the second finding #97 for a fantastic powerplay chance. But was part of the problem with some iffy coverage on each of the first 3 Vancouver goals Made a key mistake on the 2-2 when he blew the zone reading a possible breakaway, in the process leaving the deadly Quinn Hughes free and clear to unleash his deadliness after the Oilers failed to clear the zone. Among those beaten on the game-tying and game-winning goals, both scored from the lip of the crease after Edmonton’s defensive structure collapsed. But among the defensive culprits on the decisive 3-2 and 4-2 tallies. 8 shot attempts to tie for the team lead, but 3 giveaways and guilty of tunnel vision at times. Made a great pass to McDavid for the 2-0. Opened the scoring with a nifty move on a breakaway.

GAME RECAP: Canucks 5, Oilers 2 (NHL.com)

Horvat's four points and a pair of goals from Miller lead the Canucks in a comeback win over the Oilers on Friday before the holiday break.

"Lots of things went according to what we wanted to have happen, then we gave up a goal in the first minute of the second period. "Well, I would say last year we got off to a racing start and then fell off a cliff halfway through, and that's kind of how we ended up here. We want to make the people of Edmonton proud and play with a level of execution and passion in front of them. He's the first member of the Oilers since Wayne Gretzky in 1986 to score 30 goals prior to Christmas and the first NHL player to hit 30 ahead of Dec. It was a sequence of unfortunate events for the Oilers after Miller's goal came off a partial short-handed breakaway for McDavid at the other end that saw the captain seemingly get taken down by Canucks defenceman Quinn Hughes. Ilya Mikheyev then potted insurance with 2:41 remaining, snapping a shot under the glove of Skinner for the 4-2 lead, before Horvat added an empty-netter in the last minute. "I think we're beyond the point of moral victories. McDavid becomes the first player in the NHL to 30 goals this season -- the seventh time that the captain has reached the mark in his career. On his forehand, Hyman slid a pass to the back post under the stick of Tyler Myers to McDavid, who calmly tapped his 30th goal of the season into an empty cage. Miller added a pair of goals to help get the Canucks back to a .500 win percentage with back-to-back wins heading into the NHL's pause for the holidays. Derek Ryan opened the scoring with his fifth of the campaign, beating Canucks netminder Collin Delia on a breakaway before the midway mark of the opening frame. Obviously not the second period we wanted, but we still had a chance and have to find a way to win that game.

How should the Oilers deploy their centers at 5v5? (Oilers Nation)

Edmonton is the only team in the league with three players in the top ten in total points. McDavid and Draisaitl rank 1st and 2nd respectively, as usual, but ...

Wishing you and your families a happy holiday season. Merry Christmas to all of you amazing people in OilersNation! While McLeod does several things the right way, McLeod’s major areas of improvement moving forward are shooting and passing, some pretty significant aspects of the game. These transition results are quite reflective of how good a skater he is. McLeod is a superb defensive forward, as his impact on suppressing scoring chances in the past 2 seasons ranks in the 87th percentile; put differently, he’s superior to 87% of the league’s forwards in 5v5 defensive impact. The subsequent year, it was the opposite; RNH broke even in goals without McDavid and Draisaitl, although he struggled at driving play. McDavid and Draisaitl end up having the best wingers, meaning RNH plays with inferior linemates. McDavid has had some poor luck at 5v5 and still grades out as a strong 52 xGF% without Draisaitl, but it’s nowhere near the levels that it previously was. McDavid and Draisaitl were quite good together again, but McDavid was even better at centering his own line, with an exceptional 60% goal share and 59% expected goal share. With all of this in mind, a question remains; how should the Oilers deploy their centers? While Ken Holland should certainly pursue defencemen to add at the deadline, finishing and 5v5 offence seem to be major areas for improvement as well. The Oilers also have Ryan McLeod, a reliable defensively-minded bottom-six center.

Oilers' Offseason Moves Paying Dividends This Season (The Hockey Writers)

He signed Jack Campbell, Mattias Janmark, and Ryan Murray in free agency and traded for Klim Kostin. The general manager also brought back Brett Kulak and ...

Kulak is one of the smoothest skaters in the league, is focused on defence, but has been showing the ability to create offensive chances and move the puck very well up the ice. Murray is currently injured, so he should return to either the seventh-defenceman role or even be demoted to the AHL once Kane returns to the lineup and the team lacks cap space. Kostin looks like one of the best moves Holland has made as the Oilers general manager, while Janmark has been more than the team could have asked for. He was rotated in the lineup earlier in the season when Markus Niemelainen and Philip Broberg were struggling. The Oilers have been able to shower him with tons of goal support so that his record is 8-6-1. Campbell has gotten off to a horrible start to his tenure as an Oiler with a 4.02 goals-against average (GAA), .876 save percentage (SV%), and a minus-13.6 goals saved above average (GSAA). He has just three goals and six points in 21 games on the season, but he put together His confidence is very high and looks to be a permanent fixture in the Oilers’ lineup moving forward. Things have been working between them so well that Nugent-Hopkins has had the full support of running his own line for a while now and has been producing at 5-on-5. There’s no doubt he was going to continue a pace very similar to that and even elevate his goalscoring. Not only have some of the decisions made by Holland got the Oilers through a tougher time, it has set things up nicely for the future. Signing Janmark and making what seemingly was an American Hockey League (AHL) transaction has turned out to be two great moves.
