An internal memo obtained by The Canadian Press says the review also found “a need for greater civility and respect in the newsroom” and “a desire to improve working conditions.” Among the findings that emerged in the independent workplace review, conducted by employment lawyer Sarah Crossley and her associate Laura Freitag, is “a culture where people are sometimes afraid to raise concerns for fear of reprisal or inaction.” The decision follows an independent third-party review of the CTV national newsroom that was sparked after the ousting of LaFlamme as anchor of the flagship newscast.

What was Lisa booted for?” CTV employees still have questions about LaFlamme's ouster, which sparked national conversation on ageism and sexism.

Omar Sachedina has since assumed the role of chief news anchor and senior editor of CTV National News. They added that it created an atmosphere of low morale and apathy in the newsroom. “We thank them for their willingness to participate and their candour. There was nothing stopping them from doing this review while she was there if they were so concerned about morale,” one employee said, who requested anonymity, citing fear of professional repercussions. Sachedina was previously a national affairs reporter for the network with 15 years of experience. She was 58 at the time. “What was Lisa booted for? “I know for a fact that during the review, there were things employees said about Melling’s management style and his handling and the company’s handling of Lisa’s situation.” A senior journalist at CTV told the Star that Melling’s move to VP of Shared Services should not be seen as a demotion. “While it is crushing to be leaving CTV National News in a manner that is not my choice, please know reporting to you has truly been the greatest honour of my life,” LaFlamme [Lisa LaFlamme](https://www.thestar.com/opinion/contributors/2022/08/24/racial-diversity-is-good-for-business-but-ctv-bell-media-got-it-horribly-wrong.html), Bell Media [told](https://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2022/08/26/ctv-executive-michael-melling-to-take-leave-in-wake-of-lisa-laflamme-firing.html) staff in August that the then vice-president of news, Michael Melling, would take a leave from his job. It highlighted several findings, including a need for greater civility and respect in the newsroom, and a desire to improve working conditions, as well as a culture where “people are sometimes afraid to raise concerns for fear of reprisal or inaction.”

Karine Moses, senior vice-president of content development and news for Bell Media, said at the time that LaFlamme rejected the opportunity to bid farewell on air. She did not offer details on the other job opportunities Bell Media presented to LaFlamme. "We are pleased to announce that Richard Gray, Interim VP, News is assigned to the role on a permanent basis. Her replacement, national affairs correspondent Omar Sachedina, who joined the network in 2009, was announced the same day. She "was offered many options to come back and to do many things, which she declined, and I respect that," Moses said in a recording of the meeting obtained by The Canadian Press. "The goal of this review was to gather information about the culture, environment and practices in the CTV National newsroom, with a view to identifying any issues, concerns or areas for improvement so that we could then work to address them," the memo said.

Michael Melling was vilified when CTV National parted ways with Lisa LaFlamme, he's now in charge of a significant operation inside Bell.

Among the three cases are claims of racism, sexism and poor working conditions. Only those in the newsroom will know what truly happened, but after hearing so many first-hand accounts, it’s hard to conclude LaFlamme wasn’t part of the problem at CTV National. Discussions with more than a dozen people who had worked with LaFlamme over the years painted a complex picture. They pointed to concerns about her hair having gone grey during the pandemic. LaFlamme’s ouster as anchor of CTV National News in August shocked many and created a backlash against Bell from supporters of the longtime journalist. While that’s true — Melling has been replaced by one of my former bosses, Richard Gray — he’s been named vice-president of shared services for all of Bell Canada.
