Weathers has also played the International Hilton that Elvis used to play; he's also been in the same hospital that Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks) visits in the movie. (Not to be a Grinch, just think this is a little indulgent, which has been a hallmark of late period Cecily. "The demon was good," says Weathers. Lasagna welcomes special guest "casual Elvis" (Austin Butler) to serenade her with "Blue Christmas." "This is really nice, Motown," says Weathers. I know women just like her," adding it "is fresh and smart." [Kenan Thompson](https://ew.com/person/kenan-thompson/) aside, she's our last link to that third golden age era headlined by the likes of [Bill Hader](https://ew.com/person/bill-hader/) and [Jason Sudeikis](https://ew.com/person/jason-sudeikis/), outlasting her compatriots [Kate McKinnon](https://ew.com/person/kate-mckinnon/) and [Aidy Bryant](https://ew.com/person/aidy-bryant/) by a handful of episodes. Love the accents, love Kenan, love calling out the weird ubiquity of this German treat. I love how specific and strange this is — it's silly and absurd and barbed. "You can almost taste the taste!" Elvis Presley was one of the most charismatic, mesmerizing performers to ever appear on a stage." "The selective realism really worked, and they really rolled the story together well," he notes.

Austin Butler was not the "King of SNL" in the final episode of 2022 (The A.V. Club)

After a strong string of episodes, this SNL felt like everyone left early for the holiday break.

[Blue Christmas](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvTmjdhBRVs)” moment felt a little odd since it focused so much on Strong with Butler. Strong, along with Kenan Thompson, was one of the longest-running performers and her exit feels like the end of an era. It also would have been funnier if Jost had finished the segment with the purple lipstick smeared across his face. However, after he receives the second gift the sketch cuts away to Santa on the roof. [Plirt](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAxEaZ-NkLQ).” “A Christmas Epiphany” showcases the impressive cinematography and production design of the SNL crew, but more importantly plays to Butler’s strengths. Unfortunately, “The Phrase that Pays” is the former. This mash-up of It’s A Wonderful Life and the ending of [Stella Dallas](https://youtu.be/M8x2PSIhbh0?t=75) allows Butler to play the straight man and utilizes his seeming lack of humor effectively. The incremental joke is too subtle for sketch comedy. The fact that Punkie Johnson and Heidi Gardner don’t have much to do to escalate the scene, and as the game show host James Austin Johnson is accurate and adequate. For better or worse, the game show parody is a standard of SNL. He gave it a great effort and, of course, great writing can remedy all of the above. First, it didn’t help matters to be hosting after veterans of sketch comedy like Steve Martin and Martin Short, or for that matter, following such a charismatic first-time host as Keke Palmer the week before.

Saturday Night Live Recap: Goodbye, Cecily Strong. Hello, Austin ... (Vulture)

Cecily Strong's departure hits hard both because of its abruptness and because she had lately settled into her role as the backbone of this show.

[ the Trump NFT cold open](https://youtu.be/Izukxr-SfsM) was the first joke of this entire episode, considering that you had to have been alive and of MTV-watching age in 1995 to remember that band at all. [• Lizzo’s second song of the night](https://youtu.be/aJjTRUCfZ7c) is officially billed on YouTube as “Someday at Christmas (Amazon Music Original).” Shout out to Jeff Bezos, I guess, for allowing Lizzo to write Christmas music? [Last week’s Please Don’t Destroy video](https://youtu.be/x3ItsU1DC4w) might have been the first time the seams started to show; the first time the PDD guys’ bag of tricks actually felt like a bag of tricks. As a bonus, Lizzo’s appearance here carries some continuity from [ her last PDD video](https://youtu.be/M5s52CB1e_4), where she was improbably attracted to Martin Herlihy. Radio Shack in the first place.” (The sketch is ostensibly set at Radio Shack.) But as Strong herself says in [ her other goodbye moment](https://youtu.be/ysjMZrFTpjQ), as Weekend Update character, Cathy Anne: “Everybody has to go to jail at some point, right?” (The character is ostensibly going to jail.) As fellow vet Kenan Thompson gushed in one of two fourth wall-breaking [ farewell scenes](https://youtu.be/VvTmjdhBRVs) in the episode, “[Every week] she’d have a power and joy to her performance that made you remember why you love working at … [ guitarist Nick Zinner’s ailing health](https://pitchfork.com/news/lizzo-to-replace-yeah-yeah-yeahs-as-snls-december-17-musical-guest/). (“I’m sorry, my culture is not your costume!”) You can’t help but root for this over-it Krampus to get some much-deserved me-time — and not just because that means he might stop gobbling up naughty children for a bit. What caught far more people off guard was the news that broke just hours before the taping: the final episode of 2022 would be Cecily Strong’s [ final episode as a cast member](https://twitter.com/nbcsnl/status/1604299423760191488). It’s the most fun he has all night, and his infectious exuberance almost breaks much of the cast on hand here. (They were replaced by Lizzo, who reliably [ Lizzo’d all over the place.](https://youtu.be/gnvPKUUueFc)) That unfortunate announcement first arrived a week ago, however. The host, who shot to fame in Baz Luhrmann’s hypnotically excessive Elvis — and whose speaking voice sounds like Brad Pitt doing Elvis — recalled watching SNL as a child with his mother, who has since passed.

Austin Butler SINGS hit Elvis song Blue Christmas on Saturday Night ... (Daily Mail)

Austin Butler stepped onto the Saturday Night Live stage to make his anticipated hosting debut for the show's special Christmas episode.

Lizzo, who was the musical guest on the episode, suddenly appeared in the skit, standing next to the writer that was her boyfriend. Austin became upset and grumpy to his friends in the room. The following sketch took place at a home full of close friends who were about to play the present game called White Elephant. The chef did a quick taste taste, and revealed the candy was finished. Kenan Thompson began to talk about the candy, and introduced a few children, played by SNL stars and Austin, who would detail the German treat. In a pre-recorded black and white scene, Austin played the character of Rich, who was spending his Christmas Eve alone. A chef making the candy suddenly appeared, with Austin discovering that the secret recipe to marzipan was simply mushed almonds. The track was a perfect way to end the SNL episode, but the star had an overall successful night as a debut host on the show, beginning with his opening monologue. The actor talked about his late mother, who passed away in 2014 due to a battle with cancer. The talented actor stepped up close to Cecily and the two shared a quick embrace. Austin revealed that his older sister, Ashley, was also in attendance to support him on the show. The sketch took place at Radio Shack, with Kenan Thompson saying a few words to Cecily on her last day on the job.
