Report: Kevin Durant Told James Harden He Was Not in Shape (Sports Illustrated)

As many already know, the second year of the Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and James Harden experiment was not a pretty one. On paper, they were easily the ...

According to a friend, Harden also became frustrated with the Nets training staff and its focus on maintenance, rest and recovery; after all, in Houston he'd run stadium stairs and lift – even after games sometimes – and he never got hurt." Also, Harden and Durant, according to multiple Nets sources, butted heads during the season – Durant didn’t think Harden was in peak physical shape, and told him as much; Harden, meanwhile, struggled to adjust to an ecosystem where everything was no longer catered to him. On paper, they were easily the most talented team in the NBA.

Harden blamed injuries for why things didn't go as planned in Brooklyn.

2 when he shot 2 of 11 from the field in 37 minutes and had more turnovers (six) than points (four). Some of that was due to injuries and the freak occurance of a worldwide pandemic. [Deandre Jordan](/nba/players/1622506/deandre-jordan/) to a huge deal in free agency because he was friends with Durant and Irving, which led to internal tension when then-head coach Kenny Atkinson rightfully started [Jarrett Allen](/nba/players/2268537/jarrett-allen/) over Jordan at center. Harden contends he never quit on the Nets -- an accusation that clearly stings given he made these comments nearly a year after he was traded. Doing so comes with risks, though, and the Nets have paid the price. He played the final three games of the series, including a miraculous 53 minutes in Game 7, but was not himself as the Nets lost at home and were eliminated. All told, he missed 11 games before being traded to the Sixers at the deadline, and then missed another seven in Philadelphia. But Harden is correct to criticize the Nets' lack of structure. The injury derailed Harden's 2021 offseason, which was already shortened due to the pandemic. His first answer was that it was tough because "I wasn't able to get healthy." He is back on the court now, though, and the Sixers have gone 3-1 since he returned from injury. But Harden has to feel pretty validated now that the Nets continue to be dysfunctional with Durant’s since-rescinded trade request, the firing of head coach Steve Nash, and ongoing drama episodes with Irving, Ben Simmons, and others. [wrote a lengthy feature this week](https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nba/james-harden-on-his-legacy-and-how-the-joel-embiid-partnership-is-key) on the Philadelphia 76ers star Harden. Weitzman also interviewed Harden himself in the feature. But it was thought that Harden had a better relationship with Durant, whom he had previously played with on the Oklahoma City Thunder. The report also says that the ex-NBA MVP Harden grew frustrated with Brooklyn’s training staff and its focus on “maintenance, rest, and recovery.” As a result, Harden’s conditioning also suffered, and he played just 80 total games for Brooklyn before getting traded to the 76ers last February.

James Harden Opens Up About Time With Nets and Kevin Durant ... (Complex)

In an interview with Fox Sports, Philadelphia 76ers star James Harden talks about his tenure with the Nets and criticizes the team's lack of structure.

Durant and Harden were known to butt heads during the season. It was just, there was no structure and even superstars, they need structure. He said he wasn’t able to get healthy because he was dealing with a hamstring injury.

Report: James Harden, Kevin Durant 'Butted Heads' over Harden's ... (Bleacher Report)

James Harden's time with the Brooklyn Nets didn't last long, and one issue was his friction with Kevin Durant during the 2021-22 campaign.

"Me and him are cool," Harden said of Durant. Despite high expectations for the trio in Brooklyn, the team failed to reach their potential, reaching just the second round of the playoffs in 2021. Harden came to Brooklyn in January 2021, creating an exciting lineup of superstars alongside Durant and Kyrie Irving.

Answering James Harden's Nets 'quitter' question after Kevin Durant ... (ClutchPoints)

James Harden doesn't like the "quitter" label when he forced his way out of the Nets. He even compared it to Kevin Durant's trade request.

Harden is returning from a tendon strain in his foot and hoping to lead the 15-12 Sixers back up the Eastern Conference standings alongside Joel Embiid. “His play, often dispassionate and sloppy, culminated with a four-point performance in a loss to the lowly Sacramento Kings. And the simple explanation is, similar to his departure from Houston, Harden’s vehicle to getting his way was quite literally quitting on the floor in games. I detailed the guard’s astonishing lack of effort during a four-point, six-turnover performance in a loss to the Sacramento Kings, Harden’s final game as a Net. While Durant later revealed he shared similar discontent regarding Nets management and coaches last season, the 12-time All-Star played the year out and waited until the offseason to seek a new home. Now, nearly a year removed from Harden’s departure, Durant remains the engine for a Nets team that has posted the league’s best record (11-3) over their last 14 games. Durant arrived in San Diego at a world-class level, fresh off brilliant springtime playoffs and Summer Olympics performances and ready to commit to the Nets and his co-stars with a new extension for the next four years,” the story reads. The two never resolved the conflict, and there was little that teammates, coach Steve Nash or Marks could do to mediate it.” “Durant was astonished in the opening weeks of the season at Harden’s lack of explosiveness and sluggish play, something he attributed in large part to Harden’s being out of shape, as he did the ensuing hamstring issues,” Arnovitz said. The former MVP detailed his desire for all players to be “held accountable for their habits as basketball players,” something he felt was not happening in Brooklyn last season. Harden was heavy and out of shape, and intrigued with the idea of free agency for the first time in his career.” James Harden’s comments regarding Brooklyn’s lack of structure would not come as a surprise to anyone following the team last season.

“Am I Still the Quitter?”: James Harden's Indirect Dig at Kevin Durant ... (The Sportsrush)

By the looks of it, The Beard seems to be having the last laugh in the case of the Brooklyn team.

It won’t be wrong to say that Harden has all the requirements to win the chip this season. Nonetheless, after a lot of negotiations and discussions, Durant decided to keep put with the Nets. However, by the looks of it, The Beard seems to be having the last laugh in the case of the Brooklyn team. In his second season with the Sixers, James Harden seems to have found himself in a happy place. In hindsight, Harden was wise enough to pivot at the right time, evidence being Durant wanting out during the recent summer. It won’t be wrong to say that there has been a somewhat decline in Harden’s performances post his forceful exit from Houston in 2021.

Kevin Durant Shares Praise for Scottie Barnes: 'You Got a Good One ... (Sports Illustrated)

Brooklyn Nets superstar Kevin Durant praised Scottie Barnes, saying the Toronto Raptors have a 'good one' as the sophomore finds his footing this season.

"You get comfortable after your first year until you realize you really got to put your foot on the gas and get even better in your second and third year. You’ve had some success, you can relax a bit, [but] you have to still put your foot on the gas to get better and find ways to get your individual skills better, but also learn how to work with your team," said Durant. "I think he's only going to get better as time goes on," Durant said of Barnes. You got a good one up here in Toronto." "I enjoy just playing against the Raptors," he said Friday night following Brooklyn's fourth straight victory over Toronto this season. Kevin Durant has never held a grudge against the Toronto Raptors.
