Scored a great goal on the rush to give the Oilers the lead in the second. Solid game, especially in the third period when his line came on strong to score a goal and largely carry the play. Took a pair of penalties in rapid succession, the second for a hit to the head when he wasn’t even looking at his opponent, who by definition was low to the ice on the play. Among those tagged on 3 chances the other way, including being beaten by a key pass on the 3-2. Had a tough time in the second period in particular, when he was among the defensive culprits on 4 Grade A shots in that frame. Avoids the dreaded grade of “1” by virtue of some strong work on the penalty kill, and some decent defensive plays down the stretch including a vital tipped shot into the netting. Opened the scoring just 63 seconds in on a gift powerplay due to the Blues starting the wrong line-up, and the Oilers seemed off to the races. Tagged with a -1 on the first Blues goal but had no chance to join the play on a delayed line change. One of two bottom sixers to play double digit minutes (10:55), in part due to his 1:59 on the penalty kill where he got the job done. Among the culprits on the killer 3-3 goal when he was unable to suppress Kyrou’s pass to Tarasenko. But the bigger disaster came in the dying seconds with the Oilers on the powerplay and in full control of the puck, only to cough it up deep in their own territory and then lose battles and coverage.

Edmonton Oilers Looking For Defense (prohockeyrumors.com)

The Edmonton Oilers can score, everyone knew that. Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl rank first and second respectively in league scoring, each well ahead ...

[Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic reports](https://theathletic.com/4006959/2022/12/16/nhl-trade-rumblings-horvat-oilers-defense/) that the Oilers have already been doing some due diligence on defensemen that might be available this season. If the team is going to cut bait in the summer, they might as well do it a bit early to clear some cap room. [Connor McDavid](https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/m/mcdavco01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-) and [Leon Draisaitl](https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/d/draisle01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-) rank first and second respectively in league scoring, each well ahead of third-place [Tage Thompson](https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/t/thompta01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-). Even [Ryan Nugent-Hopkins](https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/n/nugenry01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-) and [Zach Hyman](https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/h/hymanza01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-) are among the league’s best, sitting tied for 13th and 20th in points. Adding a difference-making defenseman would be difficult in that scenario, even with salary retention from a rebuilding club. A shootout loss and another blown point for Edmonton, who sit fourth in the Pacific Division after 31 games with a 17-13-1 record. When he is ready to return, it would seriously complicate things.

'It's disappointing': McDavid, Oilers feel burned by disallowed OT ... (Sportsnet.ca)

Thursday's 4-3 shootout loss to the Blues saw the NHL's Situation Room disallow Draisaitl's overtime goal, resulting in a riled up Oilers team and captain.

Then, with the Blues’ net empty and Edmonton on a late powerplay, Nurse tried to float a pass to Draisaitl that was batted out of the air by Vladimir Tarasenko. McDavid cruised along as the puck went into his feet, his eyes on the puck but not his stick, and he believed he was in control of the puck the whole time. “It was a crazy game,” said the Blues' three-point man Jordan Kyrou. “We should never even have been in that situation.” But was McDavid in control as it crossed the line, despite the fact the puck was not physically on his stick blade? In the end, a night that ended in weird theatre began the same way, with the Blues being called for icing the wrong lineup for the opening faceoff. “Players just want some clarity on some of these rules,” he said. That’s unacceptable on my part,” Nurse said. Every team in the NHL can point to one where they got burned. If I had possession or not, I guess that's the judgment call,” said McDavid, who was seen disciplining his hockey stick against an arena wall as he left the ice post-game. “We kind of get burned on a call in the playoffs over a similar type of situation. Nurse’s poor play — he was directly responsible for two of St.

Oilers' Overtime Winner Lost to Offside Review (scoutingtherefs.com)

The potential game-winning overtime goal from the Edmonton Oilers was waved off after the NHL's Situation Room ruled Connor McDavid offside on the play.

[McDavid] does not touch the puck from the time it leaves his stick outside the blueline until he receives the pass from Draisaitl. Louis Blues went on to win the game 4-3 in overtime. Makar himself did not precede the puck into the attacking zone, and held off touching the puck until all Colorado players cleared the zone. The act of propelling the puck with the stick, hand or feet. At some point after the zone entry, he lost control of the puck. The last player to physically touch the puck with his stick or body shall be considered in possession of the puck. Some time between then and the puck going past O’Reilly, it was determined that McDavid lost control. O’Reilly’s stickwork prevents him from recovering the puck, driving the lack of control. McDavid had control of the puck in the neutral zone. McDavid carried the puck through the neutral zone, crossing the blueline ahead of the puck while being defended against by Blues center Ryan O’Reilly. At any point in overtime or in the final minute of regulation, the league automatically reviews all plays eligible for a Coach’s Challenge. McDavid clearly entered ahead of the puck, which doesn’t necessarily make him offside.

Edmonton Oilers Recall Markus Niemelainen (prohockeyrumors.com)

Niemelainen was sent to Bakersfield in late November, and now finds himself back on the Oilers' roster after a 10-game stint in the AHL. Advertisement.

He averages under ten minutes of ice time per night, and his time on the penalty kill has declined as well. At the AHL level, though, Niemelainen’s overall role reflects what the Oilers are likely hoping he can develop into on their NHL squad. In 20 games last year Niemelainen had one assist, skating just over 13 minutes per night with over a minute on the penalty kill.

Edmonton Oilers Retrospective: The Chris Pronger Trades (Oilers Nation)

From the perspective of a small-market team like Edmonton that frequently couldn't afford to keep star players around, a salary cap would be a game-changer.

Plenty of things have gone well, highlighted by adding Hall of Fame talents in Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl at the top of the draft, but the sentence ‘the Oilers are looking for help on their blueline’ has been omnipresent around these parts since Pronger left. You can’t blame him for trying to patch together a contender after coming that close in 2006 but it might have been ill-advised to assume the team without Pronger was anywhere close. The Oilers wound up with some quality players because of the deal but nobody came close to matching the impact that Pronger had on the team. - Lupul was moved after one season to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Joni Pitkanen, beginning a chain of annual moves that saw the Oilers rotate through players who didn’t pan out. He was our best forward in the playoffs that year and I thought we were sending an Edmonton boy back there and he would tear it up.” Days after Game 7, rumours started to leak that Pronger had requested a trade out of Edmonton. During the playoffs, Pronger took his game to another level. They went 21-46-15 on the season and missed the playoffs for the first time since 1978-79, ending a streak that had spanned 25 years. Beyond having a handful of veterans signed to pricey contracts, the team’s owners were actively trying to sell the Blues, so they adopted a no long-term contracts policy. From the perspective of a small-market team like Edmonton that frequently couldn’t afford to keep star players around, a salary cap would be a game-changer. The post-lockout NHL saw ties removed in favour of shootouts, a crackdown on clutching and grabbing to increase offence, and, most importantly, the implementation of a salary cap. The first one nearly netted Edmonton their sixth Stanley Cup and the second one left shockwaves that the Oilers felt for years after the fact.
