Manitoba Hydro reduces rate hike request (Winnipeg Sun)

Manitoba Hydro has reduced its rate hike request to the Public Utilities Board by 1.5%, the crown utility announced Friday. Read more.

The average customer will see less than a $3 a month change in electric heating costs, which is based on an average of 1,000-kilowatt hours (kWh) per month and less than $6 a month for those with electric heating based on an average consumption of 2,000 kWh a month. They also ensure we have the financial resources available to address the risks created by factors out of our control like increasing interest rates, export prices and droughts like what we saw in 2021.” Hydro says it has filed a request that would see increases of 2% in each of the fiscal years 2023-24 and 2024-25.

Hydro had originally asked for a 3.5 per cent increase in each of the next two fiscal years but now it's down to two per cent.

The updated rate increase request comes after the provincial government announced in November it would help cut costs for customers by reducing the amount of money it gets from Hydro every year. This change would mean an increase of less than $3 for the average customer without electric heating, and $6 a month for the average customer with electric heating, Hydro said in a release Friday. Hydro had originally asked for a 3.5 per cent increase in each of the next two fiscal years but now it’s down to two per cent.
