The Toronto Blue Jays have officially signed outfielder Kevin Kiermaier to a one-year, $9-million contract.

Kevin Kiermaier Is Finally, Actually a Blue Jay (FanGraphs)

Kevin Kiermaier and George Springer will join forces to cover plenty of ground in the Rogers Centre outfield.

[ownership’s permission to stay over the luxury tax threshold](https://theathletic.com/3977926/2022/12/07/blue-jays-luxury-payroll-tax/) in 2023. That means the Blue Jays should be in the market for names like [Andrew Benintendi](https://www.fangraphs.com/players/andrew-benintendi/17901/stats), [Michael Conforto](https://www.fangraphs.com/players/michael-conforto/16376/stats), [Michael Brantley](https://www.fangraphs.com/players/michael-brantley/4106/stats), and [Jurickson Profar](https://www.fangraphs.com/players/jurickson-profar/10815/stats). Thus, it came as a surprise when they dealt Hernández to Seattle for reliever [Erik Swanson](https://www.fangraphs.com/players/erik-swanson/16587/stats) and pitching prospect [Adam Macko](https://www.fangraphs.com/players/adam-macko/sa3011555/stats). With all that in mind, the Blue Jays seem to be a lovely match for Kiermaier, warts and all. The most logical explanation for the unexpected swap was that the Jays had a plan up their sleeves – something along the lines of signing [Brandon Nimmo](https://www.fangraphs.com/players/brandon-nimmo/12927/stats) or trading for [Bryan Reynolds](https://www.fangraphs.com/players/bryan-reynolds/19326/stats) – and they needed to free up roster space to make it happen. As for his bat, a guy with a 95 wRC+ in a good year is vulnerable to some pretty ugly slumps. not – but with Kiermaier in center and Springer moving to a corner, the Jays hope to field one of the better defensive outfields in baseball. Kiermaier is highly unlikely to play a full season – he’s injury prone and a liability against left-handed pitchers – but he’ll be a solid contributor in the 300-400 PA he does receive. We can’t read too much into his defensive metrics from last season (he only played 60 games), but his sprint speed was elite and his arm continues to be one of the strongest in the league. He was worth just 1 OAA, but his Statcast outfielder jump metrics were all in line with the year before, when he ranked in the 97th percentile for outfielder jump and 98th percentile for OAA: This represents a significant offensive downgrade for Toronto – Hernández is one of the top 30 hitters in the majors, and Kiermaier is… If that sounds like old news, it’s because it is, but now, after four days spent in limbo (a dangerous activity for those recovering from hip surgery), we finally have the contract details to prove it.

It’s difficult to know what to expect, but immediately, Kiermaier noticed the Blue Jays standing eagerly at the front of the line. For context, that would automatically make him the fastest player on this roster, ahead of the speedy Whit Merrifield (28.7 ft/sec), giving the Blue Jays another dose of athleticism in the field and on the basepaths. “As a player, you just want to feel wanted, and no other team seemed to want me more than the Blue Jays,” Kiermaier said. After a decade of dazzling and frustrating the Blue Jays with his defensive brilliance, it’s Toronto’s turn to enjoy the show. “They want me to play pretty much every day,” Kiermaier said. There are two ways to measure Kiermaier’s impact on this club defensively, starting with the fancy stats. Kiermaier seemed to clear that up quickly.

Opinion | Kevin Kiermaier: Blue Jays' centre-field job mine to lose (Toronto Star)

By committing to the free agent, the team is gambling on his health. The 32-year-old has appeared in 130 or more games just once in his career.

Kiermaier came off as friendly and outgoing during his introduction to the Toronto media. However, even though Pillar spent most of his time in this city as a fan favourite, he never hit well enough to become an integral player. Kiermaier is two per cent worse than league average for his career and the number grew to 10 over the last four years. “From top to bottom, everyone in that lineup crushes the ball,” Kiermaier said. Additional space could be created if the Jays move one of their three catchers — Kirk, Gabriel Moreno or Danny Jansen — but as of Thursday the lack of clarity would make for a tough sell to free agents. “I know one speed,” said Kiermaier, who is also a two-time Wilson defender of the year. “When it came to a role, they said they want me to play pretty much every day,” said Kiermaier, who hit .228 with a .281 on-base percentage in 63 games for the Tampa Bay Rays last season. Once he returns, Kiermaier doesn’t expect his style of play to change. By committing to Kiermaier, the Jays are gambling on his health. Atkins has yet to host a media availability since Kiermaier’s contract was first reported on Saturday, but part of his presentation apparently involved guaranteeing the veteran outfielder a specific job. A specialist recommended he put off hip surgery in favour of a rehab program that also involved cortisone shots. During Thursday’s introductory news conference over Zoom, Kiermaier talked at length about how he was blown away by the Jays’ pitch at the outset of free agency.

In 2021, Kiermaier posted an OBP of .328 and if he’s in that range at the bottom of the Blue Jays lineup, he should easily surpass his career high of 62 runs scored. Given that Kiermaier owns a career OPS of .715 and was slightly better than the above trio on one leg this year at .228/.281/.369, there’s already some net offensive gain. “And now that my legs are feeling so much better, I know I can get back to my form (from) before and I want them, pitchers, to know that they can attack these guys, throw the ball over the plate and if it doesn't leave the yard and if it's in the air long enough, I'm going to catch it. 614 plate appearances in 2022 and they combined to hit .228/.270/.340 with 10 home runs. Inevitably, that built a lot of familiarity between the centre-fielder and his new club, each knowing very well what the other brings to the table and what they were looking for this off-season. I'm going to limit runners, guys don't go first to third on me a whole lot and little things like that matter.

News and Notes: Kevin Kiermaier speaks for the first time as a Blue ... (Blue Jays Nation)

We finally have the details of Kevin Kiermaier's contract and some spicy sound bites. It also seems that the Jays aren't finished signing starting pitchers ...

With Kiermaier officially a Blue Jay, the Blue Jays’ 40-man roster currently sits at 40. The soon-to-be 37-year-old was even better in 2022 with the Chicago White Sox, posting a 3.35 ERA and 3.79 FIP in 158.1 innings pitched. However, there were no rumours linking Syndergaard to the Jays in the off-season, so it wasn’t surprising that he signed elsewhere. Another option could be for the Mets’ Carlos Carrasco, similar to the Steven Matz trade prior to the 2021 season. Cueto has a career 6.8 BB%, and that stood at 5.1% in 2022. This isn’t great, as Chris Bassitt has yet to be officially signed, meaning moves will have to be made. While there’s a little bit to be desired with the bat, Kiermaier excels defensively. It wouldn’t be surprising if they still want to use Springer as a designated hitter, meaning the signing of Joey Gallo, Michael Conforto, Michael Brantley, or Andrew Benintendi makes sense. For his career, Kiermaier has slashed .248/.308/.407 with 82 homers in 3351 plate appearances for a 97 wRC+. They’ll almost definitely add another left-handed batting outfielder before the start of the season. [ You can read that here](https://bluejaysnation.com/news/the-blue-jays-have-a-full-40-man-roster-so-somethings-gotta-budge-before-the-chris-bassitt-addition-is-made-official). However, as the Jays are in win-now mode, so upgrading the fifth spot in the rotation is a need in my opinion.

Kevin Kiermaier brings elite defence to Toronto: 'I'm a game-changer ... (The Athletic)

After nine seasons with the Rays, Kiermiaer is excited about a new journey — and about wearing a new shade of blue.

“With the talent in that clubhouse that we’ll bring to the table each and every day, we can win a lot of ball games and make a lot of great things happen and we’ll see how we mesh with each other, but I have all the confidence in the world that it’s going to be a great fit for all parties,” he said. “I want to get on base as much as possible, draw my walks, bunt a little bit more, do whatever I can to complement this lineup and let all the big dogs drive me in,” he said. “I know the area already and that’s comforting for me,” he said. But, as a left-handed hitter, Kiermaier adds versatility and if manager John Schneider slots him in the bottom third of the order, he’ll “do my part down there.” “With what I put my body through, trying to get ready, be a speed guy, doing all the things I had to do to try to keep my game at a top level was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do and very mentally draining. He called the labrum tear a fluke thing, but early in his career, his overaggressiveness led to avoidable injuries, he said. “I felt guilty what I was putting my body through and I knew surgery was what was needed,” he said. He tried another cortisone shot but, “it was an uphill battle” and he didn’t feel like he was playing to his capability. “As a player, you just want to feel wanted, and no other team seemed to want me more than the Blue Jays and that appealed to me so much. However, even with Kiermaier able to play everyday centre field, there’s room for the Blue Jays to add another left-handed bat, who could play a corner outfield and/or DH. After dealing with a series of injuries throughout his two years in Toronto, there was always a line of thinking that suggested sliding Springer to a less physically demanding corner outfield position could help keep him on the field more. “I want the pitchers to know that they can attack these guys, throw the ball over the plate.
