As healthcare crisis worsens, silence-as-usual from Doug Ford (Green Party of Ontario)

Ontarians deserve to hear how the Ford government plans to address the worsening crisis in pediatric hospitals and across the healthcare system.

The government should also move more decisively to fast-track trained foreign nurses and other healthcare professionals into all sectors of our healthcare system. In the first six months of 2022-23, the government underspent on healthcare by almost $860 million. Ontarians deserve to hear how the Ford government plans to address the worsening crisis in pediatric hospitals and across the healthcare system.

'An aberration': Ford government's process to select next chief ... (Toronto Star)

The provincial government is taking control over the selection of the next chief justice of the Ontario Court of Justice using a process the judges say ...

Critics said the Tories’ changes damaged the independent process and opened up the system to patronage appointments. Downey’s office told the Star in a statement that he “relies on the same broad discretion … “I’m very uncomfortable with that,” Russell told the Star. The court’s chief justice is appointed by the provincial government on the recommendation of the attorney general. The Ontario Court of Justice provided a brief statement. “There’s no question they have the legal power. “Bear in mind that the No. Under the new process, judges wouldn’t know who has applied, nor who would sit on any interview committee that Downey might decide to create, she wrote. It is also our view that the process as outlined undermines judicial independence and violates our democratic system of separation of powers.” Downey says he will “personally and directly conduct any discreet inquiries” into potential candidates by speaking with individuals “with knowledge of a candidate’s suitability for appointment.” The Ontario Court of Justice is one of the busiest courts in Canada. I’d like it to do good.”

Reopen the legislature to tackle health-care crisis, NDP says (Sudbury.com)

New Democrats say pausing the legislative session until February is a bad idea while hospitals are overwhelmed with children sick from respiratory ...

“It’s frightening when one hospital shuts down its ER and the nearest one is 70 kilometres away. The NDP said in a news release this week that data from Ornge, Ontario’s air ambulance and medical transport service, shows “a sharp rise” in the number of transportations of kids under 18. 2, Ornge numbers reported by the party show that 544 kids under 18 had to be transferred from one hospital to another to receive the care they need. “We can fix the health-care crisis in Ontario by giving health-care workers competitive benefits and wages and using incentives to return nurses to the frontlines. “It’s scary to have a sick child and no hospital nearby with capacity to help, and it would be unthinkable to let this crisis go unanswered by the government for weeks and months over the winter as viruses circulate.” They say Premier Doug Ford should recall the legislature and take “action to fix the health-care crisis.”
