Gamethread #29: Canucks vs Flames (Nucks Misconduct)

The Brock/Bo trade distraction is in full effect and I don't know how the team makes it out of December in a playoff position with everything in the media being ...

This whole situation smells of Benning, but now Allvin is in the same spot. They other 2 meetings won’t take place until the end of the year, so points now are important. Every game is a 3 or 4 point swing in the standings. Who would have thought that Kadri/Hubreadeu would not be as good as Tkachuk/ Gaudreau....wait a second, nevermind...quite a few thought that. The Canucks have entered the fun part of the year. The rest of December is filled with Western conference opponents.

Canucks vs Flames Odds, Picks, and Predictions Tonight: Calgary ... (Covers.com)

NHL odds, picks, and predictions for the Vancouver Canucks at Calgary Flames on December 14. NHL betting best bet and free pick analysis.

The Over is 5-1-1 in the past seven meetings in this series, and 22-10-5 in the past 37 meetings in Calgary. The Flames have alternated the Under and Over in each of the past nine games, so it’s hard to get a read on which team is going to show up. [Spencer Martin](https://www.covers.com/sport/hockey/nhl/players/6227/spencer-martin) will be in between the pipes for the Canucks, and he is a solid 8-3-1 with a 3.45 GAA and .891 SV% overall. Better yet, the Over is 15-5-1 in the past 21 games for the Canucks inside the Pacific Division. Calgary is also 9-3-1 in the past 13 games inside the division. [Jacob Markstrom](https://www.covers.com/sport/hockey/nhl/players/658/jacob-markstrom) spent six-plus seasons from 2014-20 as a member of the Canucks, and he was pumped up to see his former organization over his first two years in Calgary. Despite those two high-scoring games, Vancouver is still 4-2 to the Under across its past six games. The Canucks were playing some fire-wagon hockey in a two-game span from December 5-7, scoring 13 times while allowing 11. Playing Over 0.5 Assists (-110 at FanDuel) looks like a good bet. As such, playing Under 2.5 SOG (-130 at FanDuel) is worth a look. The Canucks are underdogs for the first time since December 1 at home against the Panthers. The Canucks offense was on fire last week, tallying 16 total goals in a three-game winning streak, with each game going to overtime.

NHL Odds, Preview, Prediction: Canucks vs. Flames (December 14) (The Action Network)

Jonny Lazarus breaks down Wednesday's NHL game between the Vancouver Canucks and Calgary Flames.

The Flames have been at the bottom of the league in most offensive categories, they struggle to generate a ton of scoring chances and have a -0.47 goals for above expected. Another area of the Flames’ game that hasn’t been as good as last year is their goaltending. Vancouver has been money on the power play this season, entering this game with the seventh-best man-advantage unit in the league (27.3%). The Vancouver Canucks have been nowhere near perfect this season, but you can’t deny that their top players have been performing. The Canucks have been an absolute wagon offensively and boast the ninth-best goals for per game (3.46). Martin has an impressive record of 8-3-1, but his numbers have not been as good as he would like. Calgary is still trying to figure out its identity now that it’s without Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk. The Calgary Flames are nowhere near as good as they were last year, especially in regard to offensive production. Especially Horvat, who is leading the team with 20 goals. Canucks 4, Flames 3 (SO): Another blown lead, another rally ... (The Province)

The loss of Boeser to non-COVID illness opened the door for Hoglander to work well on a line with Garland and Dries.

“It’s just a big part of the game he brings,” Flames forward Blake Coleman told reporters following the morning skate Wednesday. The incident occurred in the second period when Tanev was struck by a Nick Suzuki slap shot while killing a 5-on-3 power play. The Flames defenceman was struck in the side of his head by doing what he does best — blocking a heavy power play shot. “He was great and so easy to play with because he’s so predictable,” said Horvat. Lazar played 70 games for the Flames over two seasons and Wednesday was more than just renewing acquaintances. Hoglander also fed Dries with a sweet feed to draw the Canucks back even at 3-3 in the second period. He stays in the battle and gives us a chance almost every night. The go-ahead goal was a cumulation of chaos when Lewis got by J.T. Martin was screened by Dries when Mangiapane found the net to make it 2-2. The line combined for two goals and Dries almost netted the winner earlier in the third period when he took a Garland feed, only to have his backhander snagged by Markstrom. “I’d like not to give up a two-goal lead, but at the same time, we didn’t panic.” The Canucks can score and they can struggle to defend.

[Dillon Dube](http://www.espn.com/nhl/player/_/id/4063268/dillon-dube) had two assists and [Jacob Markstrom](http://www.espn.com/nhl/player/_/id/5452/jacob-markstrom) finished with 24 saves. [Nils Hoglander](http://www.espn.com/nhl/player/_/id/4565263/nils-hoglander) had two assists and [Spencer Martin](http://www.espn.com/nhl/player/_/id/3042069/spencer-martin) stopped 35 shots to improve to 9-3-1. Garland got the puck near the left corner and beat Markstrom from the left circle for his fifth at 1:48. Dube and Backlund both missed on Flames' final two attempts to give Vancouver the win. I thought we had a really good start and they scored a deflection goal and a lost-coverage goal quick. [Nazem Kadri](http://www.espn.com/nhl/player/_/id/5349/nazem-kadri) from behind the goal. “I was proud of the way we played tonight,” Horvat said. In previous games or early in the year, we might have a little panic in our game, Dries scored a big goal and I thought we did a good job after that, kind of limiting their Grade-As. [Andrei Kuzmenko](http://www.espn.com/nhl/player/_/id/5077308/andrei-kuzmenko) scored the only goal of the shootout and the [Vancouver Canucks](http://www.espn.com/nhl/team/_/name/van/vancouver-canucks) beat the [Calgary Flames](http://www.espn.com/nhl/team/_/name/cgy/calgary-flames) 4-3 Wednesday night for their sixth straight road win.

'A hard-fought road game': Canucks battle back vs. Flames for well ... (Sportsnet.ca)

The Vancouver Canucks beat the Calgary Flames 4-3 Wednesday in a game the visiting team impressively settled and won after losing another two-goal lead.

A minor-leaguer the last seven seasons, he has played only 24 games in the NHL. “I’m just trying to time it depth-wise,” the goalie explained. Coach Bruce Boudreau rewarded him with a rare shift in overtime when the Canucks outshot the Flames 5-2 and generated seven scoring chances. Sheldon Dries, a healthy-scratch in Saturday’s 3-0 loss against the Minnesota Wild, tied the game 3-3 with another clean shot past Markstrom at 5:31 of the second period. But for the most part, we just played so direct, cycled the crap out of the puck. He has the element of surprise.
