800 goals ago, Alex Ovechkin was a rookie in need of a roommate (The Washington Post)

Brian Willsie was a veteran charged with teaching Ovechkin the ways of the NHL. Now, he watches his former roommate with awe.

“He didn’t want to let his group down, and I think we all have that in us, but to watch him do that the first year and every year is something that I took from him. Willsie was there for the Russian’s first goal and knew from the start there was “something special” about the Capitals’ No. … He was just willing to do anything to be a part of the group.” From the start, Ovechkin had infectious energy, and he let his personality shine. Ovechkin looks back at his rookie year with fondness, not only because it was his first shot in the NHL but also because of the players who welcomed him with open arms. “He is not a little kid anymore,” Willsie said with a laugh. “I thought that was so cool,” Halpern said. In the celebration that ensued, Ovechkin started to yell in the pile on the ice. “He has such a commitment and enthusiasm about him,” Willsie said. “He was always bigger than me, but now he is the man with a family, and he has got a lot of distractions. When Willsie looks at Ovechkin now, he still sees the excitement, passion and love for the game. He is two goals shy of passing Gordie Howe (801) for second on the NHL’s all-time list and 95 goals from breaking Gretzky’s record.

* Goal No. Ovechkin had tied Howe two days earlier with goal No. 13, 2022, Ovechkin opened the scoring just 24 seconds into the game, added a second first-period marker and completed the hat trick on Blackhawks goaltender Petr Mrazek to join Wayne Gretzky and Gordie Howe as the third player in NHL history to reach the 800-goal milestone. The only player to reach the 700-goal mark at a younger age or in fewer games than Ovechkin (age 34, 1,144 GP) was all-time goals leader Wayne Gretzky (age 29, 886 GP). The fourth-fastest in NHL history to reach the 600-goal milestone, Ovechkin ended the season with four goals in his final three games to claim the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy with 49 goals. 10, 2016, playing in front of family and Capitals faithful at Verizon Center, Ovechkin became the fifth-fastest in NHL history to reach the 500-goal mark (801 GP) with his first of two tallies against Ottawa’s Andrew Hammond. At the time, he was one of three active players who held their franchise’s goals record – New Jersey’s Patrik Elias and San Jose’s Patrick Marleau were the others. At the time, it was the 15th goal streak of four or more games in Ovechkin’s career – a number that has since increased to 28 and has been achieved by only two others in League history: Mario Lemieux (34x) and Wayne Gretzky (30x). 5, 2009, Ovechkin netted his League-leading 37th goal of 2008-09 and 200th of his NHL career when he beat Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick in their first-ever meeting. 12, 2007, Ovechkin scored his 100th NHL goal (167 GP) to become the 10th player in the League’s expansion era (since 1967-68) to reach the milestone in fewer than 170 career games. He added his second tally just 4:30 later to become the first player in Capitals history to score multiple times in his League debut. Ovechkin scored a hat trick against the Chicago Blackhawks, spurring a standing ovation from the United Center crowd.

Alex Ovechkin makes hockey history with his 800th goal (KOSU)

Ice hockey player Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitols made history Tuesday when he scored his 800th goal.

Svrluga says it's his smarts for the game and a fast, dangerous shot. That area we've kind of labeled over the years as Ovie's (ph) office because it's like he's in a BarcaLounger over there just firing these missiles past goalies. SVRLUGA: Eight-ninety-four just seems like an outlandish total, but he has this knack for being able to put the puck past the goalie and find the back of the net. But Svrluga says Ovechkin is also on track to beat that record. 1 is Wayne Gretzky, beloved as the great one to hockey fans. And this year's hockey season is young.
