Mr. Sousa won with 51.2 per cent of the vote in the by-election, well ahead of his Conservative opponent, Ron Chhinzer, who received 37.3 per cent.

Mr. The Conservatives have 118, the Bloc Québécois have 32, and the NDP have 25. “In a world where Canadians are unenthusiastic about the federal leaders and less loyal to parties, local candidates may increasingly be a key differentiator for campaigns,” he said. Nanos agreed that having a strong candidate was a key advantage for the Liberals. You’ve got a big differential in terms of the public profile of the two main candidates, so that’s usually worth a good five points for whoever is better known.” In a statement Tuesday, Mr. Sticking to the main topics – if you’re the Conservatives – stay on the economy, pocketbook issues around affordability, interest rates, housing affordability, crime and public safety. Teneycke said in an interview Tuesday. “The result is a lump of coal that should be cause for reflection for Mr. Marland, the head of the political science department at Memorial University in St. Poilievre was elected Conservative leader in September. Speaker, the people of Mississauga-Lakeshore have spoken and elected a Liberal member of Parliament.”

Charles Sousa wins Mississauga—Lakeshore federal byelection in ... (The Pointer)

Charles Sousa, a former Mississauga MPP, will join Justin Trudeau's federal government in Ottawa after winning Monday's byelection.

The anemic voter turnout was similar to the October municipal election when just under 22 percent of voters cast a ballot in Mississauga. While voter turnout is often lower in byelections, Mississauga—Lakeshore only saw 26 percent of those eligible to participate cast a ballot Monday and during the early voting period. “Voters in Mississauga–Lakeshore rejected the reckless policies of Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives and chose to move forward with Justin Trudeau and our Liberal team’s positive plan to make life more affordable and build an economy that works for all Canadians.” He won close to 50 percent of the vote through three elections in 2015, 2019 and 2021. The results suggest, despite the huge name recognition advantage and deep roots Sousa has in the local community, the Conservatives have built momentum in Mississauga. The Mississauga race, however, might not reflect the national mood, as Sousa enjoyed significant name recognition in the riding and his Conservative challenger was virtually unknown, having never held public office before. The ongoing 300-acre transformation of Mississauga’s former Lakeview power plant site into a mixed-use waterfront community to create a “green oasis” where a former coal plant once stood for decades has been celebrated as a major achievement. It was widely popular with residents across the province and elevated Sousa’s reputation as an expert in finance. Sousa was a high profile and highly visible MPP during his time at Queen’s Park serving not only his constituency in Mississauga—Lakeshore, but all Ontarians through his work in senior cabinet positions. Voter turnout has been on a steady decline in Canada for decades. In 2011, he became Ontario’s minister of citizenship and immigration. He was picked on just over 50 percent of the ballots cast, beating out Conservative candidate Ron Chhinzer by approximately 3,300 votes.
