Blue Jays To Sign Chris Bassitt (MLB Trade Rumors)

The Blue Jays and free-agent righty Chris Bassitt agreed to a three-year, $63 million contract. Read more at MLB Trade Rumors.

Free agents [Michael Brantley](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/brantmi02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=&utm_medium=referral) and [Michael Conforto](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/confomi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=&utm_medium=referral) are among the most obvious fits, but the Jays could also ship one-third of that catching triumvirate out as part of a deal to acquire a younger left-handed bat and/or additional reinforcements to a bullpen that could still benefit from an arm or two. [Teoscar Hernandez](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hernate01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=&utm_medium=referral) to the Mariners — a deal that netted them an under-the-radar but high-end reliever, [Erik Swanson](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/swanser01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=&utm_medium=referral), and a fairly well regarded pitching prospect, [Adam Macko](https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=macko-000ada&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=&utm_medium=referral). Ginn](https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=ginn--000jt-&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=&utm_medium=referral) and [Adam Oller](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/o/ollerad01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=&utm_medium=referral) in the deal — Bassitt made a career-high 30 starts and reached a career-high 181 2/3 innings in New York. Not only will the Jays be strong on a per-inning basis, but the combination of Manoah, Gausman and Bassitt have all averaged better than 5 2/3 innings per start in recent years, which should go a long way toward helping keep the team’s bullpen fresh. If any of Bassitt, Kikuchi or White can turn in a strong showing this coming season, Toronto’s rotation could very well rank among the best and deepest in Major League Baseball. The Jays remained largely quiet in the weeks to come, but just this weekend struck a deal with longtime Rays center fielder [Kevin Kiermaier](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/k/kiermke01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=&utm_medium=referral) — one of the premier defensive players in the sport (when healthy). It’s possible that Kiermaier alone will push them to the $233MM first tier of luxury penalization, which would mark the first time the Blue Jays have crossed that barrier. Of course, the entire picture could still change — at least to some extent. The ultra-consistent Bassitt will step into the mix behind third-place Cy Young finisher [Alek Manoah](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/manoaal01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=&utm_medium=referral) and ninth-place finisher [Kevin Gausman](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gausmke01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=&utm_medium=referral), with Berrios and Kikuchi likely to follow. Bassitt alone brings their projected payroll a bit north of $200MM — already a club record — and Adding Bassitt is a large step toward that end — one that ostensibly aligns with a push to improve the team’s run-prevention, perhaps at the expense of some offensive thunder. The right-hander immediately dropped into a heap on the mound and had to be carted off the field with a towel covering his face.

Sources - Blue Jays land Chris Bassitt with 3-year, $63M deal (ESPN)

Right-hander Chris Bassitt and the Blue Jays are in agreement on a three-year, $63 million contract, sources familiar with the deal tell ESPN Jeff Passan.

The Blue Jays, sources said, continue to discuss trading from their plethora of catchers -- All-Star [Alejandro Kirk](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/42081/alejandro-kirk), veteran [Danny Jansen](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/35004/danny-jansen) and rookie [Gabriel Moreno](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/42464/gabriel-moreno) -- with teams still showing significant interest. [New York Mets](/mlb/team/_/name/nym/new-york-mets), where he threw a career-high 181⅔ innings and posted a 3.42 ERA. The Blue Jays, who finished in second place in the wildly competitive American League East division, got swept in the wild-card series by the [Seattle Mariners](/mlb/team/_/name/sea/seattle-mariners). Berrios' deal, for seven years and $131 million, kept him from reaching free agency this winter. Over eight major league seasons, Bassitt has a 46-34 record with a 3.45 ERA, along with 671 strikeouts and just 228 walks in 737⅓ innings pitched. [Kevin Kiermaier](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/31446/kevin-kiermaier), returns a potent offense that includes [Vladimir Guerrero Jr](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/35002/vladimir-guerrero-jr)., [Bo Bichette](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/38904/bo-bichette), [George Springer](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/32078/george-springer) and [Matt Chapman](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/33857/matt-chapman). Toronto, meanwhile, continues to focus on starting pitching, a tack that has had mixed results in recent years. The Blue Jays gave Hyun-Jin Ryu a four-year, $80 million deal before the 2020 season. The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Bassitt has made a career out of confusing hitters with a wide array of pitches: a fastball that sits at 93 mph but is located with pinpoint precision, along with a cutter, slider, curveball and changeup. Bassitt has kept similar company in recent years, as his 3.29 ERA since 2018 ranks 11th in MLB among pitchers with at least 100 starts. [Alek Manoah](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/42436/alek-manoah) and [Kevin Gausman](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/32667/kevin-gausman) as well as [Jose Berrios](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/32811/jose-berrios), who signed a nine-figure deal last year but struggled. [Jacob deGrom](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/32796/jacob-degrom) and [Justin Verlander](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/6341/justin-verlander).

Consider this the Blue Jays’ heavy lifting in the rotation, but they shouldn’t be done. After the top names left the board, it was sensible for the Blue Jays to work towards locking down the middle of their rotation, which will trickle down to help their overall depth picture. But the Blue Jays didn’t necessarily need flash here. Getting Bassitt on a three-year deal instead of having to stretch to four or five -- even as he turns 34 -- makes this a particularly strong fit for Toronto. Bassitt, who will turn 34 early in Spring Training, is coming off a strong season with the Mets, in which he posted a 3.42 ERA with 167 strikeouts over 181 2/3 innings. In the simplest of terms, this is an arm the Blue Jays are betting on confidently. Over the past five seasons, he has pitched to a 3.29 ERA, maintaining consistent walk and strikeout rates across the board.

Blue Jays bolster rotation signing Chris Bassitt to a three-year deal (Toronto Sun)

A Blue Jays front office that made bolstering its starting rotation the top priority has done just that.

The Bassitt signing likely will end up being the Jays biggest off-off-season business — barring a trade of one of their three big-league catchers — but it doesn’t mean that Atkins is done. No, it did not have to happen in the shadow of the Gaslamp Quarter. A Jays off-season under this front office can never truly be graded until the season starts, even if it looks like opportunities are being squandered. Sure, they weren’t going to go crazy and outbid the Mets on a two-year, $86.6-million deal for Justin Verlander — or do any shopping in that stratosphere. Perhaps even more notable, he also just completed a career-high 181.2 innings in 2022, adding another workhorse to a bullpen assisting starting group. Add in the prospect of a bounce back from Jose Berrios it could border on dominant.

Opinion | Blue Jays beef up rotation, sign starter Chris Bassitt to $63 ... (Toronto Star)

Verlander might have been the dream, but Bassitt is a solid consolation prize for a team with World Series aspirations.

The off-season of disappointment is no more, Atkins and the Jays are back in business. While Verlander might have been the dream scenario, Bassitt is a solid consolation prize for a team with World Series aspirations. That should make things easier on a bullpen that was overworked for much of last season because of the Jays’ inability to field five competent starters following injuries to Stripling and Hyun-Jin Ryu. Luxury taxpayers would have been forced to part with their second- and fifth-highest selections along with $1 million of the bonus pool. The cost to upgrade the rotation wasn’t cheap but it was a price worth paying. If the Jays keep their starters healthy for most of the season, they shouldn’t have any issues filling innings. According to FanGraphs’Roster Resource, the Jays currently have a competitive balance tax payroll of approximately $225 million and that doesn’t include the recent signing of Kevin Kiermaier. Alek Manoah and Kevin Gausman form what should be an effective top two while the Jays are hoping for a bounceback season from José Berríos after his disappointing 5.23 ERA in 2022. Bassitt has a better foundation with a 3.31 ERA over his last 546 innings while limiting opponents to a slash line of .228/.292/.367. Bassitt’s $21-million average annual salary is the third-highest for a free-agent starter this off-season behind Verlander and deGrom. A lot of players have been exceeding off-season projections, but Bassitt’s deal falls in line with what had been expected. The Jays have agreed to terms with free agent right-handed starter Chris Bassitt.

With Chris Bassitt, Blue Jays bank on reliability to bolster rotation (The Athletic)

The Blue Jays made a three-year, $63 million investment to secure a top four of Alek Manoah, Kevin Gausman, José Berríos and Chris Bassitt.

[George Springer](https://theathletic.com/mlb/player/george-springer-gUFYtxyqWevxYDkB/) as the previous example. 5 spot with some combination of Kikuchi, [Mitch White](https://theathletic.com/mlb/player/mitch-white-HNgFujK1s2UPEZAZ/) and [Nate Pearson](https://theathletic.com/mlb/player/nate-pearson-8n97KbVfDnXFueZZ/), all of whom can pitch bulk innings. In Bassitt, they bring in a pitcher who at his best can be as good as a No. Because Bassitt declined a qualifying offer from the Mets, his former team, the Blue Jays will forfeit their second-highest draft pick in 2023 and $500,000 in international bonus pool spending. On the surface, a three-year, $63 million pact for a starting pitcher about to turn 34 years old is reasonable, especially in a year when the price of pitching has been high. Bassitt will likely slot in behind them in a mid-rotation role and his steady presence should take some of the load off of Berríos, who will try to move on from his shaky 2022 season, his first since he signed a seven-year, $131 million extension with the Blue Jays. In the end, one of the many offseason roadmaps the front office drew up weeks ago led them to a pact with Bassitt. [New York Mets](https://theathletic.com/mlb/team/mets/) got seriously involved, they were priced out of contention for the three-time Cy Young winner. If there is a trend to watch, it’s how Bassitt fares pitching at the Rogers Centre, which plays like a neutral park and is expected to stay that way after stadium renovations. [Andrew Heaney](https://theathletic.com/mlb/player/andrew-heaney-pErie5qHevU1X4Uq/) was another target that went elsewhere. The Blue Jays have eyed a variety of starters to fill that spot as they targeted attributes like upside, stability and playoff experience. The move could end up being quite a savvy pick-up, depending on how Bassitt performs over his tenure in Toronto.

MLB free agency: Chris Bassitt, Blue Jays agree to three-year, $63 ... (CBS sports.com)

The Toronto Blue Jays have agreed to terms on a three-year deal worth $63 million with free-agent starter Chris Bassitt, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.

Bassitt is the second notable Blue Jays addition in recent days, joining outfielder [Kevin Kiermaier](/mlb/players/1812666/kevin-kiermaier/), who signed with Toronto over the weekend. When most people think about Bassitt, they think about the unusual mechanics that end with him dipping his glove low and away from his body. Some pitchers are fortunate if they can spin the ball east and west, Bassitt can do that and put backspin on the ball, giving him a trove of looks. (His previous single-season best was 157 innings.) For his career, he's accumulated a 3.45 ERA and a 2.94 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He shouldered a career-high workload in his first season with the Mets, crossing the 160-inning threshold for the first time in the big leagues. He posted a 3.42 ERA (113 ERA+) and a 3.41 strikeout-to-walk ratio in a career-high 181 innings.
