The Match 2022 final scores, results: Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth ... (Sporting News)

The Sporting News tracked live updates from "The Match" 2022 featuring Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy vs. Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth.

"The Match" will tee off at 7 p.m. E — Thomas chips his ball up to within just a few inches of the cup and the putt was conceded for birdie. Spieth hits a great tee shot to about 10 feet, then Thomas and McIlroy follow it up by knocking it safely on the green. He tried to hit a spectacular high cut over the trees (and spectators) but he chunked it and it ended up somewhere deep in the woods. Tiger punches his over the green, while Spieth hit a nice approach to about 20 feet to set up a birdie putt. — JT cozies it up near the hole with a lovely 5-wood shot to set up a very makeable birdie. He hits a great recovery shot to make it back onto the fairway and JT smacks his down the fairway as well, but Tiger and Jordan pull their shots to the left. Rory proceeds to hole a great putt for birdie to force JT to make it to halve the hole. — The competitors step up to the tee on the par 3 8th hole, and Tiger gets a roar out of the crowd by sticking it to about 5 feet! Jordan hits his safely in the middle of the green, then JT leaves his just a tad short and it goes into the greenside bunker. Tiger hits a bit of a loose approach shot to the middle off the green, then Rory and JT knock it close as well.

The Match format 2022: Explaining best ball, scoring & other golf ... (Sporting News)

Here's everything you need to know about the format for The Match 2022 as Tiger Woods and Rory McElroy go head-to-head with Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth.

For example: Let's say Tiger makes a birdie on the first hole and Rory makes a par. For instance, if Tiger and Rory are leading 3 up on the 11th tee, they are guaranteed to win the match because there are only two holes left to play at that point. The number of strokes is reset for the next hole — it has no bearing on any of the other holes. The best score from each side will count for that hole, and there will be a maximum of 12 holes played. That will allow each of the four players to play their own ball the entire time. Instead of the shamble format used in June when

I’ve never felt more uncomfortable over a putt in my life.” With the greens rolling 13 on the Stimpmeter, Thomas barely touched the putt and rolled it in to secure both the wackiest and greatest par in The Match history. While Rory assessed his third from the pine straw short of the green—which he had to play with his 3 iron—analyst Trevor Immelman asked him if he had a shot. After making a few early birdies, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth arrived at the par 4 with a 2-up lead.

There were lights illuminating the course; mics capturing the banter; and, yes, Charles Barkley. Here's a closer look at TNT's coverage.

Refreshingly, though, unlike some other iterations of The Match (we’re looking at you Brooks and Bryson) the evening was also light on forced and awkward chatter. A low point, by contrast, came on the 6th hole, [when Anderson joked](https://golf.com/news/tiger-woods-jabbed-match-announcer-quip/) that Woods, who was struggling, was getting a shot from everybody in the group. [Trevor Immelman](https://golf.com/tag/trevor-immelman/) lacked in searing insights, they made up for by mostly staying out of the way. Woods is the obviously main draw, as he and son Charlie will look to improve on their runner-up result from last year. For the players, however, it was tricky, with the shadows and the freshening moisture on the greens after sunset making things difficult. It ended up just six feet from the hole and he rolled in the birdie to win the match. The downhill, left-to-righter was centre-cut all the way, and he hit McIlroy and Woods with a Michael Jordan-type shrug. It was early still, but Thomas’ epic roll from about 25 feet on the second hole set the tone for the rest of the match. A birdie on the 7th hole by McIlroy set up the lone winner for he and Woods. On the par-3 9th, Woods had a chance to make a birdie and start some semblance of a comeback. The Match teed off at 7 p.m. After his drive on No.10 left him slightly out-of-position, he ended up hitting a cut shot around a tree from a patch of pine straw. Exhibit A: During the one-club challenge hole, McIlroy’s drive managed to find a divot in the fairway. In a four-man exhibition match. He was often clocking ball speeds around 178 mph with his driver, right up there with his much-younger fellow competitors.
