FLAMES FALL SHORT (NHL.com)

Fellow Calgary Wranglers AHL call-up Matthew Phillips did not dress in the game. The two goals that beat him came on breakaways. The homeside got their second goal of the night at 2:52 of the second period following a turnover in the Calgary zone, Eric Robinson going high glove side past Markstrom on a partial breakaway. Then after a lengthy Flames possession in the Jackets zone, Yegor Chinakhov was able to steal the puck up high and had a 2-on-0 with Laine, electing to keep and fire but Markstrom stood tall. Earlier in the final frame, it appeared the Flames had scored after a pile up in the crease but after review the ref said the whistle went before the puck crossed the line. Trailing 2-0, the Flames went on a powerplay with just over five minutes left in the third period and pulled Markstrom for a 6-on-4 advantage but couldn't find twine.

In first game against Gaudreau, Flames forget to show up: 'Very ... (Sportsnet.ca)

One night after Johnny Gaudreau treated almost half of his former teammates to dinner at his cushy new home, the Calgary Flames returned the favour.

“I think our defence struggled mightily with the puck, and in coverage, for the whole game,” said Sutter, clearly unimpressed with a setback against one of the league’s youngest and worst outfits. So, very thankful and it was a fun game to be a part of.” “We made that decision yesterday.” “We hung our goalie out to dry a little too much, I'd say,” added Stone, who scored with two-and-a-half minutes left with the extra attacker on, to make it a 2-1 game the Jackets closed out with a Sen Kuraly empty netter. A lot of guys knew how important, how special, this game was to me. I didn’t even have the best game that I’m capable of, but a lot of guys stepped up tonight and helped us get a win. Tough play in the second period and we got chasing for the rest of the game. In the box a lot. ... I feel good when we win. “That’s probably its own animal,” laughed Gaudreau, who had two shots on goal while being checked closely by Elias Lindholm’s line. ... So, that’s the way she goes.” That didn’t happen.”

Calgary Flames Post-Game: Flames' guns go quiet against ... (Flames Nation)

Those habits were front-and-centre in Friday night's game at Nationwide Arena against the Columbus Blue Jackets. They made weird decisions with the puck. They ...

Related to the turnovers: the Flames’ puck management decisions weren’t all that good in the offensive zone. Markstrom was asked to be really good, and he was, but he wasn’t able to paper over a lot of leaky defensive play in front of him. The Flames headed into the Columbus end, but a turnover led to a rush the other way, and Patrik Laine was sprung on a breakaway. The Flames pressed late and managed to break Columbus’ shutout bid. But Weegar didn’t get a lot of oomph on the pass and Eric Robinson stole it. The Flames looked a bit leaky defensively early on in this game, and it set the tone.

“Some guys came for a visit, not to try and win the hockey game. With his assist on Kuraly’s goal, Boone Jenner has collected points in five of his last six games. Defenseman Erik Gudbranson also came over from the Flames in the off-season, having skated in 78 games with 17 points including six goals and eleven assists, all of which were career bests. Gaudreau spent nine years with Calgary, skating in 602 games with 609 points (210-399). “You get a goal early on, you get one there and take a breath.

Wait continues for Flames call-up Phillips after surprise scratch in ... (Calgary Sun)

There's been a steady outcry for Matthew Phillips of the Calgary Wranglers to be added to the Flames' roster.

“I always watch him and he has done some incredible things in the league.” “Any opportunity you get in the NHL, you want to make the most of it, obviously. “It’s something that is a pretty special feeling and something that I would never take for granted. Nobody asked. His lone NHL appearance so far is an end-of-season mop-up in May 2021. He was watching from the press-box. “So that’s a stretch. There was plenty of social-media bellyaching when Flames fans initially learned that Phillips was prepping alongside Milan Lucic and Lewis on the checking unit. (Zohorna was absent from morning skate for clerical reasons — his recall couldn’t be made official until Kevin Rooney had cleared waivers to clear a roster spot.) The 24-year-old right-winger was working on the fourth line during morning skate at Nationwide Arena, but fellow call-up Radim Zohorna was battling the Blue Jackets instead. Even smaller than Gaudreau, who most would consider to be the NHL’s mightiest mite. Article content

Flames recognize margin of error is thinning: 'We can't be having ... (The Athletic)

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Calgary Flames don't have long between their 3-1 loss to the Blue Jackets on Friday night and their game Saturday night at Scotiabank ...

Sutter explained his reasoning for scratching Phillips in favour of [Radim Zohorna](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/radim-zohorna-ogCdVFkKvD1ePJ9y/) was because he needed another centre. It is tough to hear a player talk about themselves in a loss, but Markstrom was worthy of some praise even if he wouldn’t grant it for himself. Desperate for a goal, the Flames pulled Markstrom with under five minutes to play and played six-on-four while already on the man advantage. [Johnny Gaudreau](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/johnny-gaudreau-RJPyWnHKTQDbiIqo/), the offence fired blanks and they were too leaky on defence by giving up countless odd-man rushes. Yes, the Flames scored five goals earlier this week but they should have been able to light the lamp against a Blue Jackets that is struggling through injuries while at the bottom of their division. The Flames weren’t particularly lethal at five-on-five, failing to generate many shots that perturbed either In the box a lot. “Tough play in the second period and we got chasing for the rest of the game. Those same Blue Jackets didn’t dominate; Columbus was outshot, ineffective on the power play (they have the league’s worst) and was below 50 percent in the faceoff dot. Darryl Sutter singled out his defensive core for struggling “mightily” with the puck and with their coverage. Calgary didn’t play well from the jump and the Flames got themselves into too much penalty trouble when they needed to battle back from a deficit. But good teams also show progress in fixing those problems, and it is a concern that these problems will appear against teams they’re supposed to beat.

But beyond his superb play against the Stars, Gaudreau unfortunately faded into the background a bit in the other playoff encounters he was involved in. And yeah, it’s probably fair to note that the ’80s teams had the benefit of some really stacked rosters (and no salary cap). The 2004 Stanley Cup run, with Kiprusoff’s heroics and Iginla’s performance in moments like “The Shift.” Heck, Lanny McDonald cemented his legend with a goal in the Cup-winning game in 1989 – along with that iconic photo of him cradling the Cup after the game. And he only advanced past the first round twice. The list of players with more regular season points wearing a Flames jersey is short: Jarome Iginla, Fleury, Al MacInnis and Joe Nieuwendyk. Since his debut in the National Hockey League on April 13, 2014, Johnny Gaudreau has played 627 regular season games against 31 clubs.

[Jacob Markstrom](https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/m/marksja02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-) started in goal against what should have been a weaker opponent, but the Flames left him hanging in this unfortunate bout. Use the promo code “WINCOLUMNCGY” when you checkout! It was the sixth time this season that Markstrom allowed a goal on his first shot, but it really wasn’t his fault. The Flames allowed so many odd man rushes against, including several breakaways and even a 2-on-0, that was just unfair to their starting netminder. In The Crease – While I don’t remotely blame him for the first goal – he can’t pull a cord and drag his defence into position – but it just sucks to see the first shot turn into a goal. They were not able to get to the middle of the ice for a shot and instead played with it around the perimeter. Not enough of an effort to crash the crease from down low – something the guy in the other bench used to do. xGF% – A pure sweep of subpar – something that very rarely happens. The Mikael Backlund (50.00%) wingers also ranked a little lower: Adam Ružička (41.28%) and Blake Coleman (40.82%). The bounce back came with about 3 minutes left to play – would love to see that urgency applied to every shift you’re trailing on the scoreboard. Corsi Clown – The ones who didn’t fair too well were Rasmus Andersson (39.82%) and Hanifin (31.82%). Nazem Kadri (64.19%) and Andrew Mangiapane (62.38%) were there too. Compliments to him in the sense that I could clearly tell you were trying to create offence, but it just wasn’t clicking at all in this game. The Wild game saw two 5v5 goals and now in Columbus they got zero. The top pair cannot come out and allow that to set the tone for the match. Averaging a singular 5v5 goal a game isn’t going to cut it.

As I said the other night, it sucks even more because he’s been through this before, has had some bad luck with this, and as a young player, it is tough to get traction. He has one of these shoulder injuries that is going to be a situation for him where it is rehab vs. They’re good on the rush. Other than [Tanev], our D was not even close to being in sync or in the compete part of the game at all. That is a guy who has the intangibles that separate him. He is going to approach it with rehab to begin with, but I wouldn’t expect him to miss less than the six-to-eight-week range and kind of see where things are at from there. He had probably 10 games where he was really good, and then you could see the fatigue in his game. To me, it is a very deep team. I give him a lot of credit. The big thing is that our top players have to take a step here. I think it has really been missing on the road this year. I mean, I gave up a 2-on-0 trying to create a scoring chance.

Hanifin took the shot from just outside the left faceoff circle, throwing the puck towards the Maple Leafs' net, which goaltender Matt Murray believed was in his glove. The puck was in fact loose and trickled between his pads and across the goal line as the whistle was blown.

Recap: Leafs douse the Flames in overtime (Pension Plan Puppets)

It's HNIC! Let's douse the Flames. The big news is they've figured out Milan Lucic isn't very good. Meanwhile in Toronto, Joey Anderson is getting a chance.

[pic.twitter.com/SaLZtdlgIA] [December 11, 2022] Keefe is doing the defensive start with Kämpf, Liljegren and Sandin (Is that the forward is the defenceman and the defender is the forward?). Nylander this close to scoring on the power play. But this Leafs power play is not it. Malgin hugs the bench and Matthews pops back out. Power play begins, with Matthews kicked off because he’s still bleeding. Matthews high-sticked, and for a second I thought it was his wrist and my heart stopped — he was bent over like he was clutching his arm. There’s a goal, but it’s under review because it’s post-whistle. [pic.twitter.com/Fok2hAYKSB] [December 11, 2022] Murray came out, way out to poke the puck and then he just got caught out in no-man’s land twice. The Flames gave the Leafs six power plays. A little later, the Flames took the lead off a nice sequence. As a result, the Flames leave Toronto with just one point when they probably deserved more than that. The Flames played well enough at even strength to win this game. After Rasmus Andersson drew a minor in the neutral zone, the second power play unit cashed in with a weird goal. Kadri beat Murray to give the Flames a 2-1 lead.
