Then came President Manuel Merino, who lasted less than a week before a crackdown killed two protesters and injured 200 more. President Martin Vizcarra (2018-20) dissolved Congress in 2019 and ordered new elections. Ahead of the congressional vote, the ombudsman's office said Castillo should turn himself in to judicial authorities. The one who wins will be the one with more power, he said. Pedro Castillo arrested for 'breaching constitutional order', says prosecutor, as new president Dina Boluarte sworn in.

Mexico’s president Andrés Manuel López Obrador called for “democratic stability for the benefit of the people”. Two of his predecessors faced two impeachment motions each: Pedro Pablo Kuczynski resigned rather than face impeachment and his successor, Martín Vizcarra, was ousted in November 2020 after dissolving congress a year before. Pedro Castillo: Peru's leader ousted over 'rebellion attempt' (BBC News)

In a dramatic turn of events in Peru, Pedro Castillo, who less than 24 hours ago was president, is in police custody facing likely charges of rebellion.

A police report suggests he was heading to the Mexican embassy in Lima, presumably to claim political asylum. But opinion polls suggested many Peruvians disapproved of his handling of the country. A raft of ministers, including the defence minister, resigned within minutes. A former lawyer who was something of a political unknown before being chosen as Mr Castillo's running mate, the 60-year old has asked for "space" and "time to rescue the country". Ms Boluarte is the first woman to lead Peru. The head of the constitutional court said Mr Castillo's dissolution of Congress was in violation of the constitution.
