Oloffson added a second empty-net goal with 6.6 seconds left. Can the Penguins snap their five-game losing streak in Buffalo?
There’s only so much a backup goaltender can do when his team can’t score a second goal, and the Penguins were held to just one during DeSmith’s starts in Calgary and Seattle. It’s a testament to how solid Anderson and Comrie have been for the Sabres. - In Carter’s absence, Drew O’Connor tied for the team lead with six hits in his season debut, but his third line struggled to generate offense last night. The league is full of genetic freaks and that’s the one advantage he has on a lot of guys is his ability to work at such a high load. But his metrics are off the charts, with 54+ percent marks in Corsi and xG percentage while starting only 40 percent of his shifts in the offensive zone. Power anchors the second pairing, and he’s also a monster at 6-foot-6 but skates like a ballet dancer. After five seasons as a fringe NHL player, Comrie made 16 starts with the Jets last year. They won against the Blackhawks on Saturday, when Tage Thompson scored twice in the third period to send the game to an overtime which the Sabres ended in just 36 seconds. He has racked up a ridiculous 25 shots during the Sabres’ last three contests. Pens Path Ahead: The pace of the Penguins’ schedule continues to fluctuate. They’re not the only ones— defenseman Rasmus Dahlin has six tallies as well. If you’re searching for Thompson during Wednesday’s game, look for the 6-foot-6 fellow wearing No.

The Penguins squandered another third-period lead and left KeyBank Center angry with a loss to the Sabres on Wednesday night.
Pittsburgh was held to a season-low 21 shots on goal for the game. We’re going to have to figure out what we can take from it and become a better team.” — Jason Zucker scored on a two-on-one with Evgeni Malkin to give the Penguins their first goal. A day after blowing a 5-2 lead to the Bruins and falling in overtime, the Penguins squandered a 3-1 third-period advantage to the upstart Sabres. “We had the lead a couple times here the last couple nights. “We’ve got to make sure that we reset our mindset here and figure out what we can take from this one. “I gotta make a better play on the fourth goal. We haven’t found a way to finish the game off.” But much like the Penguins during a frustrating trip out west, no lead is safe right now. The Sabres charged back with three goals in 7:13 to seal the victory, Pittsburgh’s third consecutive loss at Buffalo. It’s the third time a Sullivan-coached team coughed up five-plus goals in the third period. “It’s not a great feeling,” Crosby continued.
The Pittsburgh Penguins travel to Buffalo in hopes of snapping their five game losing streak.
He'll need to be at his absolute best to help the Penguins snap their winning streak. He is still searching for his first win of the season. With the Penguins playing their third set of back-to-back games in the past two weeks, back-up goaltender Casey DeSmith is set to start against the Sabres. To top it off, he just scored a hat trick and tallied three assists for a six point effort in his most recent game against the Detroit Red Wings. The Penguins are in a precarious position. The Pittsburgh Penguins have dropped five straight games and are looking for answers.

The Pittsburgh Penguins squandered a multiple-goal lead for the second time in two nights during a 6-3 loss in Buffalo.
[ A penalty-kill. A blocked shot. “It just comes down to finding a way and being determined. A power-play goal. “There’s no secret in a situation like this,” Crosby said. But there’s nothing they can do to change the outcome of any of the past six games. Peterka beat Casey DeSmith late in the second period to get the Sabres on the board. Instead, the Penguins are playing like late-game leads have been coated with baby oil. And Kyle Okposo. And Alex Tuch. And those two games weren’t isolated incidents.
It was a tough week for the Pittsburgh Penguins that saw them go winless in three games.

If the Penguins want to find any form of success, either Dumoulin needs to find his old game or the coaching staff has to maneuver the lineup to shelter his minutes. Once one of the most consistent stay at home defenders in a Penguins uniform, Dumoulin is close to becoming a defensive liability on the ice. It can be argued that Pettersson has been the Penguins best defender so far this season; and looking at all of the details, he pretty much has been.

[Buffalo Sabres](https://www.diebytheblade.com) (4-2-0) vs. Pittsburgh’s (not very) special teams has been a big part of their issues in this five-game lsoing streak, with the power play unit going only 3/20, while the penalty kill has given up five goals in 15 shorthanded attempts. What’s incredible though is that it’s not just Thompson that’s scoring - Rasmus Dahlin has regained his scoring touch again, matching Tage’s 12 points.

He was on the ice for three more goals against on Tuesday, and has now been on the ice for 19 goals against this season in all situations, which is one of the worst marks in the league. Goaltending has not been the only problem over the past five games, but it has been a problem. I do not need the third-and-fourth lines to provide a ton of offense, but they can not keep giving up goals at this rate. I am not going to make any definitive statements on the goaltending for the season based on one early season losing streak, but they have to be better than they have been. After jumping out to a 5-2 lead in the second period on Tuesday, they allowed Boston’s power play to quickly strike to cut the deficit to two goals going into third period. The power play has been terribly inconsistent for more than a year now and has missed several opportunities to either put games away, or perhaps even end a game.

After tonight’s game, the Sabres are now the only team in the NHL to have three players with seven goals (Thompson, Olofsson, and Tuch, respectively) and are currently tied for first in the NHL for outscoring their opponents in the third period 18-7. Though the first and second periods were some what regrettable for Buffalo, they brought an abundance of action in the third period and boy, was it fun to watch. Overall, it was a game of experience versus youth with the Pens being the second oldest team in the league with an average age of almost 30 and the Sabres being the fourth youngest team with an average age of 26. Guentzel’s goal was the fourth fastest scored at the start of a period in Penguins history. With some nice work by Peyton Krebs and Rasmus Asplund (serving as pesky distractions in front of the net), Peterka’s wrister was a thing of beauty as the Sabres finally found themselves on the scoreboard with just over a minute remaining in the second period. Then, the second period began similarly to the first - except with a sloppier version of the Sabres.

Could Penguins coach Mike Sullivan be on the hot seat? The Pens have scored the first goal of the game in each of their last three contests, so they're getting ...
The nature of their losses is what makes me nervous for Mike Sullivan. Speaking of which, Pittsburgh has blown three games in their last six games played in which And, after the first week of play, people were talking about Sullivan as a Jack Awards contender after beginning the year on a 4-0-1 streak.
The wheels fall off yet again as the Pens blow another multi-goal third period lead and lose 6-3 in Buffalo.
Peterka is to the outside but fires through a lot of traffic in front and the puck finds its way through the jumble and into the net. Malkin fails to clear the zone and the big defender Power loads up for a shot and everyone bites — except Power doesn’t shoot, he goes back against the grain to setup Victor Olofsson for a slam dunk goal. Anyways, Guentzel barrels in alone and does what he does, bury the puck blocker side on Comrie to extend the lead to 3-1. Somehow this lulls Buffalo to sleep and they end up giving a clean breakaway to Jake Guentzel a few seconds into the period. He makes the game a 3-2 Pens lead with still 16:39 left to go in regulation. The Pens almost catch Buffalo in a terrible change, but decide to over-pass the puck instead. Ryan Poehling drives the puck deep and puts a nice hard pass over for Josh Archibald to re-direct up and in the net. Brock McGinn starts the play defensively holding the puck, drawing some Sabres in and bumping the puck out and quickly Pittsburgh is on the attack. They stay out of the box early on, they keep the puck out of the net. Early in the shift Evgeni Malkin dropped Rasmus Dahlin with a big open ice hit, and soon after he was carrying the puck on a developing 2-on-1. The Pens play a more controlled start than some previous games, and strike for the first goal of the evening. Casey DeSmith is in goal for the second game of Pittsburgh’s back-to-back, otherwise all the forward lines remain the same.
The Pittsburgh Penguins could get their No. 1 defenseman, Kris Letang, back tonight if he feels well enough after warmups.
[ And we’re going to have to make sure that we track hard when the puck turns over.” We’re going to have to make sure that our transition to defense is fast and efficient. “They’ve got a lot of skill, a lot of talent up front. Those first five strides to get on the right side of people, I think is really going to be important. “They’re a real emerging team,” he said.
