The White Lotus season 2 review: A trip worth taking | Digital Trends (Digital Trends)

A compelling, sex-centric story · Aubrey Plaza, Jennifer Coolidge, and Meghann Fahy's standout performances · Plenty of visually lush, sun-soaked locations.

That said, based on the overall trajectory it takes over the course of its first five episodes, it seems safe to say that White has already set the stage for The White Lotus’ latest adventure to conclude in an even more explosive and emotionally complex way than the show’s popular first season does. Featuring a handful of standout performances courtesy of Plaza, Coolidge, and Fahy, the season delivers a messy, sexy adventure that, even more so than The White Lotus season 1, often unfolds in ways that are both surprising and intriguing. Of course, at the center of all of The White Lotus season 2’s subplots is money, which creates, ruins, and overly complicates many of the season’s core relationships. Portia and Albie’s friendly but ultimately flat relationship similarly struggles to make much of an impact, so it’s no surprise when White decides to wisely abandon it halfway through The White Lotus season 2. Her slow but sure disintegration is one of the season’s more compelling and engrossing subplots, if only because it allows Plaza to maximize the effect of her usual intensity. The same can be said for much of The White Lotus season 2, which isn’t nearly as cringeworthy or outright farcical as its predecessor. The White Lotus season 1 largely kept its cast within the confines of its central Hawaiian resort and used its setting to explore matters of privilege and wealth in various observant, often cringingly accurate ways. The White Lotus season 2, meanwhile, sees the show relocate from Hawaii to Italy and turn its attention to how wealth can often affect both romance and sex. When they’re introduced in the season’s premiere, all of The White Lotus’ new and returning players are struggling through relationship problems of their own. Throughout the premiere’s remaining minutes, we’re introduced to The White Lotus’ next round of eclectic characters, including Harper (Aubrey Plaza) and Ethan (Will Sharpe), a married duo who have embarked on their first couples’ trip with Ethan’s former college roommate, Cameron (Theo James), and his wife, Daphne (Meghann Fahy). The White Lotus season 2 doesn’t let its new location or story stop it from opening in an extremely reminiscent way. The series, which was made in order to fill a pandemic-shaped hole in HBO’s programming lineup, was never meant to be anything more than a one-time thing for both HBO and its creator-director Mike White.

'The White Lotus' Season 2 Review: We Recommend Staying At ... (Digital Mafia Talkies)

There are some series you can never get enough of, and "The White Lotus" is on that list. I remember obsessing over the screenplay at one moment, the.

The characters are layered, and the conversations are intense. The entry of the sex workers at the five-star hotel generates a sense of uneasiness among the guests and the hotel staff. Daphne is a stay-at-home mother, and Cameron is the rich, cocky financer husband. It announces to the audience that we are on a similar journey, and the closer you look at the artistic marvel, the more you are bound to find what lies hidden within it. The guests include the tourist who discovered the bodies, Daphne (Meghann Fahy), and her husband, Cameron (Theo James). The only question was, was it possible to deliver a second round of the entire package that Mike White created

The White Lotus' Second Season Is About Something Totally Different (Slate Magazine)

The structure is the same, but race and class take a backseat to a whole different subject.

Even wealth plays a lesser role, since almost all of the major characters this time are rich, with the exception of Portia and two young Italian women: Lucia (Simona Tabasco), a prostitute, and her friend Mia (Beatrice Grannò), whom Lucia is coaching on how to make quick money sleeping with tourists while she works on her singing career. But there’s a lot of talk about it, the sex people have had or shouldn’t have had, the things they’ve done to get it and the ruin it’s wreaked on their lives. We don’t know how The White Lotus’ victims will die, but the chances are it won’t be pretty, and no amount of pleasure or privilege can save them from their fate. But the grandfather shows subtle signs of cognitive decline as well as a blinkered understanding of his own past, and Albie’s delicate ideals clash with a vein of aggression both passive and otherwise—the family peacemaker is growing fed up with his role. The best a hapless concierge can manage is “a few.”) As on the first season of Mike White’s pandemic-era hit—and on HBO’s smash Ethan (Will Sharpe) is doing his best to familiarize himself with the good life, reconnecting with his college roommate Cameron, who has plenty of tips on how to spend his newly acquired fortune. The world, of course is always ending, and it always has been. The White Lotus’ rooms are decorated with examples of testa di moro, “Moor’s heads,” ceramic vases inspired by the local legend of a woman unknowingly seduced by a married man who cut off his head in return for his deception. From the moment the White Lotus’ guests step off the launch and onto the dock in Taormina, there’s death in the air. She’s just been gushing to a pair of new arrivals about the great time she’s had—the staff are so attentive, the food is amazing, and, my god, the wine. A few moments later, Daphne is butting up against a body in the glimmering blue water, which we’re told is only one of several resort guests who’ve just met with a fatal ending. [The White Lotus](https://slate.com/tag/the-white-lotus), is just taking a final dip in the Ionian Sea before she and her finance-bro husband Cameron (Theo James) head back to the U.S.

Stream It Or Skip It: 'The White Lotus' Season 2 On HBO, Where A ... (Decider)

Joining Coolidge and Jon Gries are Aubrey Plaza, Michael Imperioli, F. Murray Abaraham, Theo James, Sabrina Impacciatore, Will Sharpe.

But it’s also because White has started this season off with a set of characters who are more complete and compelling off the bat than the first season’s characters were. It could have been because we now now the show’s “game”, so to speak, and were excited to see it play out with a new group of people. The most cartoonish one so far this season is Bert, and he’s so hilariously old school that we’ll give him a pass. While some of what he tells her about her weight and eating macarons feels borderline verbally abusive, he may still fill a piece of Tanya’s soul that desperately needs to be filled. Sharpe appropriately underplays the introverted Theo, and the all play well off the guileless performances of James and Fahy as the Babcocks. The uptight Valentina, though, is constantly booting them out of the hotel, not wanting to sully her property with a “slut” like Lucia. Also trying to infiltrate the resort are locals Lucia (Simona Tabasco) and Isabella (Sabrina Impacciatore). As bodies are pulled out of the water, Valentina (Sabrina Impacciatore), the manager of The White Lotus Sicily, tells her assistant manager that they can’t be responsible for what the ocean does. But it was also because it was a good satire of how awful privileged people can be to each other and to the people who are working hard so they can have a good time at an exotic resort. She’s there to meet her new husband Greg (Jon Gries), whom she met when she was at the White Lotus in Hawaii. Cameron is a millionaire tech entrepreneur, and Ethan has recently cashed in on a company he co-founded with Cameron. The Gist: The woman, who’s about to leave the resort the beach is next to, tells the women that the resort was top notch, then goes into the water for the last time on her trip.

Where Was The White Lotus Season 2 Filmed? (Screen Rant)

The White Lotus season 2 moves away from its season 1 Hawaii location and sets itself in Sicily, but what were the actual filming locations?

Taking [The White Lotus' season 2 cast](https://screenrant.com/white-lotus-season-2-cast-character-guide/) to the same location that attracted the likes of King Edward VIII and Elizabeth Taylor is certainly in line with the show's commentary on five-star resort culture and the overly privileged side of society. White, who has been a contestant on [The Amazing Race](https://screenrant.com/tag/the-amazing-race/) and [Survivor](https://screenrant.com/tag/survivor/), would understandably use The White Lotus as an outlet for travel. [HBO Max's best shows](https://screenrant.com/hbo-max-best-shows/), The White Lotus takes breathtaking locations and plays with their cultural power dynamics. Otherwise, The White Lotus season 2 will see a cast of many new faces ranging from Aubrey Plaza to [The Sopranos](https://screenrant.com/tag/the-sopranos/)' Michael Imperioli. Taking advantage of The White Lotus' higher acclaim and its unique strengths as a show about a high-class resort chain, shifting locations brings new life and appeal to the show. [White Lotus season 1 finale death of Armond](https://screenrant.com/white-lotus-armond-death-coffin-reasons-explained/) (Murray Bartlett), the memorable hotel manager, changing to a different location in season 2 becomes all the more appropriate.

White Lotus Season 2 Premiere: An Italian Getaway Hits Rough ... (TVLine)

Recap: 'The White Lotus' has invited us to an Italian beach resort in Season 2 — but don't worry: Rich people have problems there, too.

(He slid into her DMs a while back.) They make small talk — she confesses she dreams of going to Los Angeles, where he’s from, but she can’t afford it — but soon the talk turns to action, with Lucia straddling him and untying her dress as we fade to black. Cameron teases Ethan for being a nerdy workaholic — and also points out a dolled-up Lucia and Mia, who snuck past Valentina, as “hookers.” He’s not the only one: Mia has a drink with the piano player and tells him she’s an aspiring singer, but when he tries to pay her for sex, she throws a drink in his face and storms off. Meanwhile, Harper and Ethan share a supremely awkward breakfast with Cameron and Daphne: When Harper says she works in employment law, Cameron sniffs that her entire field of expertise is “a waste of money,” and he and Daphne seem oblivious to Harper’s concerns about the state of the world. Things between Harper and Cameron get more awkward when he goes up to her hotel room to get a swimsuit, telling her how he hopes they can be friends… So Tanya orders her to “get lost” but also “stay close” (?) before suggesting she just stay in her hotel room for the whole trip. We don’t get to know that yet, of course: We then flash back to a week earlier with the guests arriving in Sicily by boat: Daphne and her chiseled husband Cameron (Theo James), joined by another couple, Harper (Aubrey Plaza) and Ethan (Will Sharpe); Dominic (Michael Imperioli), a film producer traveling with his elderly dad Bert (F.

While every new character has their own unique and hilarious personality traits, I want to focus on a trio who looks like they’re going to be a highlight of the second season. Bert is addicted to flirting with women who could be his great-granddaughters, Dominic has a broken marriage, and Albie’s just trying to keep his sanity amongst the family drama. All of these components make The White Lotus a near-perfect mashup of anthology qualities, with themes and textures easily translatable to a whole new cast of characters set against the backdrop of a setting thousands of miles away from the first season. Coolidge is in phenomenal form once again, somehow making the audience sympathize with a selfish millionaire boomer who would typically be the face of the Karen stereotype, making us see her as a misunderstood middle-aged woman looking for her purpose. Freaked out by the circumstances, she alerts the hotel staff, and the audience gets an intimate preview of what type of resort this is. The first season (which was originally supposed to be a stand-alone miniseries) featured some of the best acting of 2021, with performances by Jennifer Coolidge and Murray Bartlett taking home Emmy wins.

She says of representing her native country of Italy with her performance, “Lucia, when I read her character, I thought that she had so much in her and there was so much to portray that I was a little frightened about how that was going to go, but then I trusted Mike [White] and the script and it all flowed and I think it’s very Italian. With both of these actors having an admired legacy in Hollywood, I wondered what it was about The White Lotus season two scripts that made them want to come onboard. I am Jeff Conway, a Forbes Contributor with a focus in the Entertainment Business section. DiMarco says of Albie and Portia, “I think it’s cool that our characters met the old-fashioned way. Coming from a beloved comedy background on the popular television series Parks and Recreation and films like Ingrid Goes West, I asked Plaza how her The White Lotus character is different from previous roles many of us have come to know from her. Beyond that, the words are so strong that it just feels good to do the scenes because the flow is so crystal clear, and he creates this really great environment where you feel like he’s leading you because he knows exactly what he wants, but also tons of work to play - a lot of freedom. For my character, I tried to bring that kind of comedy of it - of like somebody that wants to be understood.” I felt a responsibility to somehow represent my country and I still feel the responsibility.” So, I was feeling also a bit embarrassed to represent Italy in this rough way, but then that was the characteristic of the character. Gries had a similar conversation with White after Coolidge signed on for season two, saying, “I got a text from Mike that just said ‘Are you free in May?’ I said, ‘Sure.’ He said, ‘I’m not going to write this part if you’re not free.’ I said, ‘No, I’ll be there - wherever, anytime, anywhere.’ He goes, ‘Okay, May - Sicily.’ I couldn’t answer. You have sort of made progress and moved on from that and I’d like to take the next step of the relationship with Greg (another returning performance by So, what was the initial conversation like between Coolidge and her fellow Emmy-winning The White Lotus creator/writer/director Mike White in getting her reprise her role for season two?

Mistaking her as a prostitute, he asks how much she is and says he just needs to be home by midnight — and Mia throws a drink on him. She loves that he’s from Los Angeles, a place that she dreams of going to, but Dominic is uninterested in making conversation, and tells her as much. As our guests’ first day at the resort has been playing out, Valentina has been playing a game of cat and mouse with two locals, Lucia and Mia, intent on sneaking into the hotel so Lucia can meet up with an American man she met online. As she rummages in the bathroom, he undresses behind her to change, fully visible in the mirror. But in the middle of having sex, we see flashes of a teste di moro vase, and she throws him off of her. 50 is not that old,” he says, now on the receiving end of the same judgment he was just dishing out. But the real chasm between the two couples is best illustrated when Harper mentions that everything going on in the world makes it hard to sleep. When she goes to proudly show them to him, she discovers him locked in the bathroom whispering on the phone — a work call, he assures her. Harper is particularly unable to hide her disdain for the privileged duo, but promises Ethan that she’ll make an effort — even though she’s convinced that they were invited on the trip for some kind of proposition, business or otherwise. We meet a multigenerational Italian American family of three men, a mismatched pair of married couples, and the returning Tanya McQuoid (Jennifer Coolidge), this time with her assistant in tow. Why is Portia on the trip in the first place? Just when we think that elderly Bert is the deviant of the family, we see that Dominic’s no saint either when he calls to check in on his (presumably) ex-wife, who has zero interest in talking to him.

'White Lotus' Season 2, Episode 1 Recap: Choose Your Character (W Magazine)

The ensemble cast of 'White Lotus' season two is giving season one's hotel guests a run for their money.

She will not stand for Rocco flirting in the lobby, for sex workers meeting customers in the hotel, or for an inadequate amount of Prosecco for her guests. Ah, to be wealthy and aggressively unsympathetic to the point of pure bliss. Take it from Cameron and his wife, Daphne—who admitted to not paying attention to the news or voting—ignorance is bliss. To be fair, it does seem obvious that Ethan’s former college roommate, Cameron, is just trying to take advantage of Ethan’s newfound wealth—and invited Ethan and Harper on the trip to pitch some investment opportunities. Season one of Lotus was known for its strong, eclectic ensemble cast, and season two is proving to follow along in the footsteps of its predecessor in that regard as well.
