The Banshees of Inisherin is funny, violent and one of the best films ... (Cult MTL)

Colin Farrell gives one of the best performances of his career in The Banshees of Inisherin, directed by Martin McDonagh.

While relatively small in scope, it’s a film that plays beautifully with a crowd touching on ideas and concerns pertinent to most of our lives. There’s a windswept-ness infused in the souls of each of the characters, but though worn down by the gusts and the sea, there’s still a wistful dreaminess that pushes them forward. It’s a rare film that embraces artifice and stupidity as a means of reaching greater truths. The quaintness of the film’s proposition, particularly matched by the simple-mindedness of Pádraic, is continually undercut by the true scope of life’s cold brutality. On the one hand, the question of legacy emerges — the importance of leaving your mark on the world. Confused, Pádraic heads to the pub, unaware that his routine is forever disrupted.

Film review: The Banshees of Inisherin is brilliant (National Post)

Newest from Martin McDonagh is very funny and also very dark, so prepare to enjoy both sides.

The Banshees of Inisherin is a superb story, and one I was half-certain would win the People’s Choice award at the recent Toronto festival, just as Three Billboards did in 2017. That’s a bit of Irish slang that does not translate as “the village wise person.” Suffice to say Dominic makes Pádraic look erudite and well mannered in comparison. He tries apologies. Viewers will get why Colm doesn’t want to be friends, though they may be hard-pressed to understand how he was ever a mate in the first place. And the thing about humour on a knife edge is that it’s sharp, but it stings. Article content

There’s a grim, gray pale that hangs over “The Banshees of Inisherin,” one that doesn’t have to be there. The main reason to see “Inisherin,” besides Davis’ brilliant work, is Gleeson and Farrell. The film’s gorgeously shot by Ben Davis, who’s worked with McDonagh before (“Psychopaths” and “Billboards”) and done a handful of Marvel entries ( [“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”](https://www.cambridgeday.com/2017/11/15/three-billboards-quest-for-justice-starts-and-ends-brutally-in-foulmouthed-comedy/) (2017) have a very much play-to-the-screen feel to them. Some comic relief comes in the Sunday arrivals via boat of a priest (David Pearse) who looks hauntingly like Peter Lorre in “M” (1931) in the confessional booth and drops F-bombs when incensed. What would happen if the principals in Samuel Beckett’s existential “Waiting for Godot” took their uneasy alliance to a grim frenemy high?

It’s worlds away from the sort of fare we tend to take for granted at our multiplexes and it’s a reminder that some of the very best stories are about ordinary folk living ordinary lives with all the humour and drama and tragedy that comes with just being alive. The Banshees of Inisherin is a powerful, thoughtful, beautifully-photographed piece that will make you laugh uproariously one minute before turning on a dime and bringing a tear to your eye. The Banshees of Inisherin is, at its heart, a story of aching loneliness and the fragility of friendship and the inevitability of our own mortality.

Secrets of 'The Banshees of Inisherin' Film Shoot in Ireland With ... (Daily Beast)

In “The Banshees of Inisherin,” the islands where the film was shot are practically another character in the movie, so we traveled to Ireland to see them.

A crucifix in the water and the impressive view are equally mesmerizing IRL as they are in the film. “He would go into SuperValu in Achill and buy waffles and get [his photo taken](https://twitter.com/cfarrellupdates/status/1447025376866156546),” the location manager adds about the star who was at one with the locals. The pub is one of several practical sets built for the shoot, including the village store in Purteen Harbor and Pádraic and Siobhán’s house on Inishmore. In the middle of the road on a cliff? The working harbor’s makeover is jaw-dropping when comparing what it looks like in its raw state to the hub of gossip we see in the film, with shopkeeper Mrs. Beside the fact that it is on a roadside, the structure is made from tin metal, plywood, and flagstone. “It needs to be like [The Searchers](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fy2-abqR8B4) and the famous scene when they opened the door,” was his instructions—switching the West Texas wilderness for the ocean. At the premiere, Gleeson said that going outside while shooting at the pub was like witnessing “a free [Donald Teskey](http://donaldteskey)” painting. In contrast, Pádraic is content living a simple existence in which he tends to his animals (including the scene-stealing When the camera peers out the window, both Pádraic sitting at a lone outdoor table with a Guinness and Colm drinking inside are in frame. “Pádraic loses everything in the world that he had experienced any of the joy in his life through. Bruges may have provided a temporary haven for the actors’ hitmen characters in that film, but, on Inisherin, it is impossible for fiddle player Colm Doherty (Gleeson) to escape his persistent former best friend, Pádraic Súilleabháin (Farrell).
