Warriors observations: Steph Curry drops 33 as Dubs survive ... (NBC Sports Bay Area)

The Warriors built a 26-point lead against the Kings on Sunday night but had to hold on for a narrow win.

The Warriors put up 50 points in the second quarter, the franchise record for points in the second quarter. To add more spacing, Kerr turned to Moses Moody in the second half on Friday night. The franchise record for points in a half is 92, when they did so in the first half against the Chicago Bulls on Oct. He scored 21 points for the quarter, going 6-for-8 from the field and 5-for-6 from long distance. Wherever the Warriors let it fly in the first half, the ball was going in. Moody was the one getting early minutes this time. Overall, Curry shot 11-for-22 from the field, 7-for-12 on 3-pointers and made all four of his free throws. The Philadelphia Warriors scored 61 points in the second half against the New York Knicks on March 2, 1962. The shots kept splashing in what was nothing short of a clinic. In the fourth, though, they scored only 17 points to hold on for the win. The Warriors opened the game a perfect 3-for-3 from the field, scored on their first four possessions and roared out to a 10-0 lead. The defense has a ton of work cut out for them, but the Warriors offense once again will be extremely tough to slow down.

NBA scores: Warriors nearly blow lead vs. Kings (Golden State of Mind)

Steph Curry caught fire in a 50-point second quarter and it almost wasn't enough for the Golden State Warriors, who hung on against the Sacramento Kings.

Wiggins finished with 22 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 blocks on 9-for-18 shooting from the field. Klay Thompson quietly had his least productive game of the season, scoring just 8 points in 27 minutes, but came up with a pair of huge stops against Fox in the final two minutes. When Curry returned to the floor with eight minutes left in the first half, Golden State exploded. With Curry on fire, the Warriors' offense became an unstoppable force that Sacramento had no chance of keeping up with. That was as good as it got for Brown on Sunday night as the Warriors defeated Sacramento 130-125. Two things were apparent early: both teams were ready to play on offense, while the defensive effort seemed to look a lot like the preseason.

- Stephen Curry has scored 30-plus points in all three games so far this season, tallying 30-or-more points in the first three games of a season for the first time since 2018… But still, the Warriors had a difficult time scoring down the stretch, and a 15-1 Kings run over a six-minute stretch in the final quarter brought Sacramento to within four points. After the Kings have rallied to get back into the game – more on that later – Wiggins came up with a steal and converted a dunk in the game’s final seconds to put the game on ice. James Wiseman came off the bench and made an instant impact, finishing with 14 points, six rebounds and three assists in 20 minutes of game action. He made six of his first seven shot attempts and had 13 points in the first quarter. Coming off a season in which he earned his first All-Star honor and became an NBA Champion, Wiggins scored on three of the Warriors’ first four possessions.

Mike Brown returns to Chase Center Sunday night, and his goal is to start bringing wins for the Kings vs. his former team.

"You talk about just a good human being and a man that treats people the right way, no matter what is going on, what situation is going on. Each coach wants the last laugh and a win on the scoreboard. But I feel like I'm 100 percent a better coach because of that man," Brown said. Brown is in his ninth season as a head coach, and so is Kerr. Maybe he'll recognize what the Warriors are running and call it out right away like a proud kid raising his hand in class. "This is the first time that I've ever come down the loading dock, and then I had no clue where the coaches' offices were in the back.

Experience and improvisation are keeping the Warriors afloat (Golden State of Mind)

Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins, Draymond Green, and Kevon Looney are the grown-ups in the room. Theirs is the example their understudies aim to ...

The noise of a small-sample size doesn’t make this trend an overwhelmingly alarming one, but it is a trend, nonetheless. Domantas Sabonis is ball watching and recognizes the second-side action a beat too late; in his panic, he jumps out to discourage a shot, but Looney is already rolling past him with no help from the strong side due to the empty corner. Such traits are what makes the Warriors starters among the best of the best, and why these Warriors are favored for another run at the top when the playoffs come around. A final swing pass to the open Curry on the wing punishes the tilted defense. In order to deny the “Get” action, the Kings double Curry around the initial ball screen. Whether this is an audibled improvisation by the players on the floor or a pre-planned variant, the veteran squad’s execution turns out to be as crisp and perfect as it could possibly be. Jordan Poole fails to generate an advantage in isolation against a capable defender in Aaron Gordon, and a turnover is translated to points on the other end. But what the Nuggets didn’t expect was that the Warriors had already lined up a counter to their counter: He then follows the pass and receives the ball back through a handoff, which is collectively called “ At different points of their careers, they were the ones being taught, but the onus now falls on them to be the ones doing the teaching using their well of experience. Concepts aren’t something they need to be reminded of; they are the tools they use to keep the team afloat and full of culture and identity. The Warriors’ starting unit survived a 2022 playoff gauntlet and came out of it champions.

3 hottest Warriors takes from first week of 2022-23 NBA season (ClutchPoints)

Here are three hot takes from the Warriors' 2-1 start to the regular season. 3. Jonathan Kuminga and James Wiseman can't play together. Steve Kerr surprised ...

Curry made his definitive case as the best offensive player in basketball en route to his fourth championship and first Finals MVP. Curry has scored 100 total points on 66 field goal attempts during Golden State’s 2-1 start, shooting an even 50% on twos and 44.4% from three-point range on the second-highest volume of his career. Don’t be surprised if those numbers come back to earth a bit, rendering Wiggins’ new level of individual success more a byproduct of Golden State’s system than the other way around, at least in the national narrative. Just like they did through the first week of the season, Curry’s ridiculous nightly exploits will speak plenty loud to voters all by themselves. Offense has been the Warriors’ biggest problem with Kuminga and Wiseman on the floor together, but defensive growing pains exist as well. Considering he and Wiseman currently fare best in a broadly similar offensive role and are still honing the finer points of team defense, Kuminga could find himself on the outside looking in at the rotation going forward. Wiggins has been easily Golden State’s top on-ball defender so far, the only player on his team with a prayer at slowing down Fox on Sunday. Wiggins has committed to rebounding just like he did during the Warriors’ title run, crashing the glass with enough vigor to be whistled for several over-the-back fouls. So much for Wiggins resting on his laurels after proving himself on basketball’s biggest stage and getting rewarded with a nine-digit contract extension. There’s no denying the incremental improvement Kuminga and Wiseman made individually coming into the season. Though Moody’s relative lack of lateral quickness one-on-one was exposed by De’Aaron Fox in the first half on Sunday, he’s still a more reliable help defender, too. Here are three hot takes from the Warriors’ 2-1 start to the regular season.

Two games into the NBA season, and it's clear that coach Steve Kerr and his Golden State Warriors are still ramping up. Andre Iguodala is still yet to be ...

The end goal of this season is still a championship, but secondary to that is the ongoing pressure of the second timeline coming into being. Now, Sacramento will be coming in against the Warriors on the second half of a back-to-back. Keeping an eye on the bigger goals, it still feels like they’re going to work a little extra hard to pick up a win after almost coming back against Denver. Thompson goes on to discuss the challenges of rehab - how difficult it was to be stuck watching “instead of getting buckets.” I am an unabashed fan boy when it comes to this dude. See what develops with Poole as a play maker, it’s a skill that Curry has in spades, and one that the team always sorely misses whenever Curry (and to a lesser extent, Green) step off the court. “Life couldn’t be any better fellas, to be honest.” Klay Thompson’s appearance on All the Smoke starts off with him seated (barefoot) on what looks to be one of the world’s comfiest chairs. It should come as a surprise to absolutely no one, but the core of the Warriors rotation is still extremely solid. For now, it’s just been a tough two games for the bench units. The Warriors’ famed “two timeline” plan is going to get a bit messy from time to time, and this is one of those times. Against the Los Angeles Lakers, the Warriors got away with it because their opponent wasn’t able to take advantage of the opportunities. But the two timelines are converging this season in a way that they haven’t before. Two games into the NBA season, and it’s clear that coach Steve Kerr and his Golden State Warriors are still ramping up.

Even Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond, and Chris Mullin didn't have a name for their style. The only thing clear was that the NBA wasn't ready for it.

They didn’t know what we were doing because we didn’t know what we were doing. [Don Nelson](https://www.basketballnetwork.net/tag/don-nelson) figured out a way to beat the Spurs. [Los Angeles Lakers](https://www.basketballnetwork.net/tag/los-angeles-lakers) in the Western Conference semis. However, Richmond was traded to the Sacramento Kings just before the regular season began. Nevertheless, Hardaway, Richmond, and Mullin share the sentiment that having done something remarkable like that was fun. “You know, we didn’t win championships together,” Mullin said of Run TMC. They didn’t know how to plan for it. They didn’t know how to discuss it. They faced the second-seeded San Antonio Spurs and lost Game 1. And more than half of that incredible feat was because of [Tim Hardaway](https://www.basketballnetwork.net/tag/tim-hardaway), Mitch Richmond, and [Chris Mullin](https://www.basketballnetwork.net/tag/chris-mullin), who would later be branded as the “Run TMC.” [Richmond](https://www.basketballnetwork.net/tag/mitch-richmond), and Mullin, improved their record to 44-38. What is this about?’ They didn’t know how to even play against us.

You can listen to the podcast on iTunes, Spotify, or wherever else you get your podcasts. Jordan Poole returned to his old ways of bench dominance, but the second unit really struggled and nearly gave up what was once a 20-point lead. As I’ll do for most games this year, I recapped the action in podcast form.

The much-awaited matchup between the Golden State Warriors and the Phoenix Suns is finally here.

Three questions for Phoenix Suns matchup vs. defending NBA ... (AZCentral.com)

Three questions entering Phoenix's showdown against the defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors at Footprint Center.

Paul is still doing everything else well as he’s second in the league in assists at 10.7 a game. Looking forward to seeing how the Warriors defend him when he's without the ball, which is happening more now. [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) or contact him at 480-787-1240. He scored 22 on 11-of-19 shooting. He may have the biggest night of them all. If he’s still struggling to make 3s a month from now, will opponents force the action so that Paul is left to shoot the ball? The 1-of-8 night is most of that, but still, wow. It’s been an adjustment, but Paul has said he looked forward to playing off the ball. The Suns veteran point guard is coming off a 1-of-8 effort from deep in Sunday’s win over the Clippers in Los Angeles. Paul last took eight in a game last season as he made three in a win at Brooklyn to cap a 4-0 road trip in November 2021. He was getting to his midrange and had the ball. The most he’s ever attempted in a game is 12 back in 2018-19 season with the Rockets, who were all about launching 3s under Mike D’Antoni.

Warriors Donte DiVincenzo injures hamstring (Golden State of Mind)

Golden State Warriors guard Donte DiVincenzo will not play vs. the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday after injuring his hamstring against the Sacramento Kings.

His defense hasn’t been up to his or the Warriors standards, though it’s worth noting that he’s been primarily playing on a bench unit that has really struggled, and has a lot of young players. In the third quarter, guard Donte DiVincenzo closed out on a Trey Lyles three-point attempt, and tweaked his hamstring in the process. With DiVincenzo out, you can probably expect to see a few extra minutes for Moses Moody. Donte DiVincenzo will be re-evaluated in a week, per Steve Kerr. DiVincenzo adds excellent athleticism, quality shooting, and pesky defense, but it’s been a tough start to his Warriors tenure. DiVincenzo was removed from the game and did not return.

[Golden State Warriors](https://www.goldenstateofmind.com/) at Phoenix Suns Suns are the team to beat. That’s right folks, in 2020 there was the Lakers and in 2021 there was the Suns... The Suns blew a 2-0 lead in their first Finals trip since Charles Barkley was their best player, then came out blazing hot last season to become the West’s #1 seed. [Golden State Warriors](https://www.goldenstateofmind.com) started off their season raising a fresh new banner and winning two out of three games at home in Chase Center.

Behind Poole, he’s playing the second-most minutes off the bench and is a trustworthy option for Steve Kerr in the big rotation. I don’t think there’s any team in the league that wouldn’t want to have a JaMychal Green on their squad.” Wiseman is going to be setting ball screens for the likes of Stephen Curry and Jordan Poole, so he will find space. “Wiseman’s big and athletic, so he poses a different challenge for your defense, especially in the second unit.” He played in 39 games as a rookie two seasons ago before not playing for over 18 months because of a knee injury. DiVincenzo was a signing on the taxpayer mid-level exception, one the Suns haven’t used yet, and veteran forward JaMychal Green joined after getting bought out by Oklahoma City.

NBA Odds: Warriors, Suns battle atop the Western Conference (Silver Screen and Roll)

Far away from the Lakers at the bottom of the Western Conference are the Suns and Warriors, two teams that will battle out in primetime on Tuesday.

His over/under of 16.5 feels better, especially because he cleared that total in two of the three games he played against Phoenix last year, too.
