Raptors pull away late to beat Heat and split challenging road series ... (Sportsnet.ca)

A long weekend in Miami, sun shining, beautiful scenery everywhere. It looked good on paper. Fun even. But when the Toronto Raptors and Miami Heat play ...

That prompted VanVleet to try to engineer the Raptors' defence to avoid said match-up, which worked like a charm for Miami initially. Nurse said that playing the same team for the second straight night would not involve a lot of extra preparation in terms of new wrinkles added on his part. The problem with Nurse going to his bench is what he gets isn’t always as reliable as Boucher’s energy. I thought he brought some speed up the floor, I thought he really ran fast and that kind of spreads to other guys … The result was a fairly standard issue Heat-Raptors rock fight. “You know we're on the road, tough battles, having to win in the fourth quarter, having to get stops … [Christian Koloko](/basketball/nba/players/christian-koloko/1193674) — getting his first career start in place of Scottie Barnes who sat out with an ankle sprain — and Chris Boucher, making his return to the lineup from a hamstring injury, had five fouls early in the fourth. Former Raptors star Kyle Lowry was 1-of-8 from the floor and heard it from the Heat crowd, with one leather lung shouting “retire.” The full Chris Boucher Experience, in other words. The Heat wouldn’t fold, but a tough Siakam fadeaway with 50.4 seconds before Trent Jr.’s big shot made the difference. Nothing was easy as is standard between the two clubs known for their commitment to playing hard as a habit. A corner three off a set-up by Siakam and Toronto was able to eke out a mini 7-0 run from there.

Raptors clamp down on Miami, top Heat 98-90 for split (Globalnews.ca)

MIAMI (AP) — Another game, another close one for the Toronto Raptors. They're noticing a trend. Fred VanVleet scored 24 points, Pascal Siakam added 23 and ...

Heat: The Heat were trying to get Butler back into the game in the fourth, but there was no stoppage and Miami didn’t have a time-out to burn. … VanVleet’s first 3-pointer of the night was the 802nd of his career, breaking a tie with Morris Peterson for second-most in Raptors history. Martin, the league said, instigated the event with Toronto’s Christian Koloko, and Jovic was suspended for leaving the Heat bench area. The Raptors outscored the Heat 42-24 from 3-point range, and 27-13 on fast breaks. “I think until we smooth the ship out a little bit, we’re going to be in a lot of close games,” VanVleet said. Precious Achiuwa grabbed 22 rebounds for the Raptors, the most ever by a Toronto reserve.

Precious Achiuwa Makes Heat Pay as Raptors Pull Out Series Split ... (Sports Illustrated)

The Toronto Raptors saw Precious Achiuwa snag a career-high 22 rebounds in a come-from-behind victory over the Miami Heat.

The Heat repeatedly sent double and triple teams his way and while he struggled to score early, the two-time All-NBA forward flashed his playmaking skills, keeping Toronto's offense ticking in the third quarter with a pair of assists on three-pointers by VanVleet and Gary Trent Jr. Speaking of Barnes, it sounds like the sophomore forward isn't too far away from a return. They dropped a three-point loss on a difficult back-to-back on Saturday and then rallied for a come-from-behind 98-90 win against the Heat on Monday to jump one game up on Miami early this year. Anunoby for a corner three-pointer to recapture the lead for Toronto. Ironically, the win wouldn't have been possible if not for Precious Achiuwa, the key player in Toronto's sign-and-trade package for Lowry a year ago. 4 pick and a group of young and talented players.

Recap: Toronto Raptors close out Miami Heat 98-90 (RaptorsHQ)

There were no scraps in this one, but the Raptors sure did fight to the finish — and head back to Toronto at 2-2 on the season.

The Raptors recaptured the lead with a splash from O.G. A show for the franchise that drafted him 20th overall in 2020 and then traded him to Toronto in 2021 for Kyle Lowry. They’ll head back North for back to back home games against the struggling Precious recorded ten points and 22 rebounds — the most from a player off of the bench in Raptors history. Tyler Herro brought it back to a three point game, but Pascal Siakam hit a smooooooooth fadeaway to maintain the two possession lead heading into a timeout. The Raptors then went on a 16-4 run, clamping down defensively and sinking some important baskets, but the lead still wasn’t safe. Fred VanVleet then made up for the missed three points from Anunoby, tying up the game with a loooooong three. The Heat gained their largest lead of the game, up 78-71 with ten minutes to go. Anunoby came out after a timeout with a powerful drive to the net that caused a blocking foul on Miami — which they challenged. The Raptors showed dominance in the first quarter, at one point went on a 10-0 run. This time, though, the outcome was different — after a hard-fought, back-and-forth affair, the Raptors escaped with a 98-90 victory. A scoring drought from the Raptors didn’t help, but they also recovered quickly defensively.

Raptors reserve returns from hamstring injury to give bench a boost in Miami.

“Obviously, at the beginning (of 2021-22) it was a little hard and people said our bench was not good, but I think we got better through the year, we were helping the team,” he said. “It’s easy for me to come and see what the game needs,” he said. You put yourself in that position and wonder where you would be on the floor and that helps me a lot.” “I think he impacted both the first and second units most of the second half of last year,” Nurse said. “Obviously, being in the timeouts, seeing what we’re missing, a couple of rebounds, a couple of rotations that we missed, from the bench, you can see it clear. “The main thing is these guys do a lot of work in the summer, they come back raring to see if any of that stuff can be put into play,” Raptors coach Nick Nurse said.

Raptors fans react to Precious Achiuwa masterclass vs. Heat (Raptors Rapture)

Toronto Raptors fans were thrilled with Precious Achiuwa after he recorded 22 rebounds in a standout win against the Miami Heat.

And a fairly big one at that! Nick Nurse came into this offseason expecting big things out of Achiuwa due to the unique toolbox of physical gifts he possessed. Achiuwa is now averaging 10.5 points and 11.0 rebounds per game this season. Considering the circumstances, this might be the most impressive Achiuwa went from being traded for Kyle Lowry to leaving Miami with a W firmly grasped in his hand. On a night where All-NBA contender Pascal Siakam got off to a very slow start and O.G.
