When the left-hander Ranger Suárez closed out the final two outs of the ninth inning, the Phillies were going to the World Series. There appeared to be a brief opening when Jake Cronenworth’s leadoff single in the seventh drove Wheeler from the game. Harper reached out and belted it the opposite way, over the left-field wall, and all of Philadelphia seemed to erupt. Hoskins, who crushed his third two-run homer in two games in the third inning. And the right-hander Wheeler, who again kept the Padres in check. It was a 96-mile-per-hour fastball from Wheeler, and the left-handed-hitting Soto drove it 439 feet over the center-field fence. to earn a playoff spot this season, celebrated in the late afternoon chill. Bryce Harper's blast lifts the rollicking Phillies to the World Series (The Washington Post)

Harper's two-run homer in the eighth inning boosted Philadelphia to a 4-3 win in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series.

The Padres may have contributed to that sense by not bringing in Josh Hader, arguably the most unhittable reliever in the game, and instead sticking with Suarez, who was in his second inning of work. Spring was miserable for the Phillies, who went two months without seeing the sunny side of .500 and got their manager fired. Had the Padres won Sunday, the teams would have reconvened in San Diego on Monday night. The go-ahead run scored on the third wild pitch of the inning by Phillies reliever Seranthony Domínguez — equaling the number of wild pitches he threw in the entire regular season, spanning 51 innings. Because the postseason schedule was condensed — fallout from the owners’ lockout, which delayed the start of the season — the traditional travel day between Games 5 and 6 of the championship series was wiped out. Beyond straightaway center, between the Stars and Stripes and a giant LED Liberty Bell that lights up after Phillies homers and wins, there were a pair of red flags flapping in the blustery wind — representing the only World Series titles in franchise history, from 1980 and 2008. Suddenly, the Padres led by a run. But carrying that lead home would prove a harrowing task, owing to the Padres’ resilience and the deteriorating elements. He was referring to the number of wins remaining to secure the championship. The tying run, charged to Wheeler, scored on an RBI by Padres designated hitter Josh Bell, who laced a double to right off Domínguez. Those 87 regular season wins were good enough for the Phillies to sneak into the postseason as the sixth seed — a prize that didn’t even exist until this year’s playoff expansion. Flying through that mist, barely airborne long enough to get wet, was a rocket-launched baseball bound for the bleachers in left-center field.

How Phillies beat Padres 4-3 to advance to the World Series: Live ... (The Athletic)

On the back of a Bryce Harper two-run homer in the eighth inning, the Phillies topped the Padres 4-3 on Sunday in Game 5 to advance to the World Series.

That was in the seventh inning. That was in the sixth inning. Jake Cronenworth was the first batter he faced in the second inning, and he lined out to third on the first pitch. He located a couple of rocks and placed them side-by-side on the threshold of the fence opening. Both throws needed to be perfect to get Hoskins on the back end because he was out by the width of a Dr. There are some things that Statcast doesn’t track, and that’s one of them, but it was a perfect, hard throw to Jake Cronenworth, who fired a perfect, hard throw to first to complete the double play. The Padres are also trying to punch the Phillies’ ticket to the World Series, but they’re trying to punch it right in the face, trying to daze it long enough to get back to San Diego. He recovered to strike out Brandon Drury for the first out of the inning, though, and he looked even better with a perfectly placed 98-mph fastball to strike out Ha-Seong Kim for the second out. The Padres got a ball out of the infield, everyone! In the past, going to the bullpen meant doom for the Phillies. He wriggled out of the inning, though, which meant the Phillies could enter the bottom of the eighth with just a one-run deficit. He was with the Yankees then, and it was a long, long time ago.

Key storylines for Astros-Phillies World Series (MLB.com)

The matchup for the 118th World Series is set. With their League Championship Series victories Sunday, the Astros and Phillies will face off in the Fall ...

Baker, in his 25th season as a Major League manager, has led five clubs to the postseason -- the Giants, Cubs, Reds, Nationals and Astros. Yordan Alvarez, following his great start to the playoffs with two homers, including a walk-off in Game 1 of the ALDS against the Mariners, proceeded to go 2-for-19 before a delivering a game-tying single late in ALCS Game 4. And both enter the 2022 World Series without a ring. A few hours later, the Astros [polished off a sweep of the Yankees](https://www.mlb.com/news/astros-win-alcs-2022) with a 6-5 win in the Bronx to reach the World Series for the fourth time in the last six years. But the way Wheeler and Nola have pitched this postseason, aside from Nola’s rough outing in NLCS Game 2, it’s not a big stretch to imagine the Phils stealing two games in Houston. Will he continue to fuel the Phillies’ Cinderella run all the way to a World Series championship? Peña, who’s hitting .303 so far in the playoffs, was named ALCS MVP and appears to be as relaxed as someone who is in his third or fourth postseason, let alone his first. Schwarber will be playing in his second World Series after winning it all with the Cubs in 2016. It helps, of course, that Peña and others have stepped up, but even a club as good as this one will be hard-pressed to win it all with virtually no offensive contributions from Altuve. For Philadelphia, this is unfamiliar territory -- the Phils haven’t played in the World Series in 13 years. Harper has been in the spotlight ever since he made the cover of Sports Illustrated as a 16-year-old phenom. The matchup for the 118th World Series is set.

The three-time batting champion ended the worst slump of his career — and the longest hitless drought ever by a player to start a postseason — at 0 for 25 when he doubled at Yankee Stadium. Nestor Cortes starts for New York. The pitching matchup for Game 5 of the NLCS is the same as the opener: Yu Darvish for the Padres against Zack Wheeler of the Phillies. "I definitely understand their frustration.

Hot Harper carries Phillies into 1st World Series since 2009 (TSN)

Harper hammered a 98.9 mph sinker to left-center, and minutes later, the Phillies had won the game and the pennant. The 2021 NL MVP slumped a bit late in the season as the Phillies made a run a the NL wild card. Padres manager Bob Melvin elected to stay with the right-handed Suarez against the lefty Harper rather than bring in Josh Hader, the hard-throwing lefty closer. The right fielder who bowed to Phillies fans each time he ran out to start the game was forced into a DH role in April because of a small tear in the ulnar collateral ligament of his throwing elbow. You just kind of expect it when he goes to the plate.” Harper delivered in the postseason, a place seen only in fits and spurts for a franchise that has two World Series championships in 140 years. Astros-Phillies position-by-position breakdown (MLB.com)

Well, here's a first: A past League Championship Series matchup is now a World Series matchup. The Astros and Phillies previously met in October way back in ...

Again, though, the Astros just run deeper. The Astros spent all season proving that they remain an elite team in MLB, while the Phillies had a losing record in September/October to back their way into a postseason spot that would not have existed under the previous format. And with their ALCS sweep, the Astros also have their pitching properly aligned, with horses Justin Verlander and Framber Valdez ready for Games 1 and 2. But whereas the Phillies have to get creative with their Game 4 assignment (it was Noah Syndergaard for nine outs in the NLDS and Bailey Falter for just two outs in the NLCS), the Astros have more quality starters than they know what to do with. Avoiding a return to San Diego was huge for the Phillies, because it allows them to roll out both Aaron Nola and Zack Wheeler multiple times in this Series on full rest, should it go at least six games. The Astros have been trying to figure out center field ever since George Springer left in free agency. Though he was uncharacteristically quiet in the ALCS, Alvarez drove the Astros to that round with two huge homers against the Mariners in the ALDS. He filled Carlos Correa’s big shoes ably with essentially a league-average offensive output and reliable defense in the regular season, and Houston values the defense and game-calling it gets from its catchers, but Realmuto provides the best caught-stealing percentage in MLB (44.1%), along with an .820 OPS in the regular season and 10 hits and two homers so far this postseason. Back when the Astros were still in the Senior Circuit (they crossed over in 2013). So as Houston and Philadelphia clash in a best-of-seven World Series that begins Friday night at Minute Maid Park, we don’t have any October history between the current concoctions of these clubs to draw on. The Astros and Phillies previously met in October way back in the 1980 NLCS.
