What are the Canucks going to do about J.T. Miller? | Offside (Daily Hive)

J.T. Miller has been great for the Canucks the past three years, but his defensive deficiencies are catching up to him as a centre.

You’d have the points to show for, and Miller would be traded as a centre not a winger. The best way to try and ensure that happens, is to give him Elias Pettersson, and give him Petey as his winger. But if the pace becomes clear that it won’t be enough, the Canucks will have a conundrum on their hands with regards to personnel for the future.

Miller's not worried about Canucks' start, but maybe he should be (Sportsnet.ca)

Asked how the Canucks would get out of trouble after a slow start, J.T. Miller said it doesn't “feel like we're in it.” But whether the team is “in it” or ...

“As long as he continues to be as competitive as he is and (has) the will to win and is the good teammate that he is, then the other stuff is going to happen,” Boudreau said of Miller. But I think that it's important for me to not be impatient and change the way I'm playing. It may turn out to be a career year, but it was not an aberration. With the Canucks, Miller is at centre stage, constantly in the hot glare of reporters and fans. But that has rarely happened to Miller for any extended period since a 2019 trade from the Tampa Bay Lightning gave him a launch pad to a new level. It's upbeat and we're excited to play tomorrow, we're excited to be home. He is one of the Canucks’ most influential players and, starting next season, will be their highest-paid one. "There are some moments of the road trip that were pressing, no question.

Canucks: Bruce Boudreau's belief in positive thinking put to test in ... (The Province)

"It's not like you're playing like crap and waiting for something really bad to happen." — Bruce Boudreau.

“We have a lot of belief and believe in eight of the last nine periods we’ve played really good hockey. To be tied or leading in the last seven minutes of every game was an emotional and psychological gut punch. • Quinn Hughes logged 27:14 on Thursday in Minnesota to rank second among all players with 27:19 of average ice time per outing. “There’s a confidence factor in the third period, but if you get one win it will start to turn around.” They ranked 30th in first-period goals, but what they’re going through now seems different. The Canucks then lost three-straight, one-goal games at Rogers Arena. The highlight that night was Bo Horvat collecting five shots and scoring with 4:07 remaining in regulation time to give his club a chance. It’s not like we’re going out and losing 6-1 every night and outplayed. “We just went through a lot of clips of the last game and there were so many positives,” stressed Boudreau. J.T. Miller isn't playing much worse defensively than normal (Vancouver Is Awesome)

The Vancouver Canucks have lost five-straight games and J.T. Miller has been on the ice for more goals against than any other NHL forward.

While Miller has definitely been on the ice for a higher rate of shot attempts and shots on goal than average at 5-on-5, actual scoring chances have been pretty close to his career average. Two of Miller’s three points this season have come on the power play and he has just four shots on goal at 5-on-5. “At some point, I think the puck will start ending up on my tape a little more but right now it’s a little hard to come by it,” said Miller. He’s playing about the same as he always has defensively but isn’t creating anything at all offensively to make up for it and that's a much bigger concern than his play in the defensive zone. The real difference for Miller so far has been on the offensive side of the puck. “I look at some of my favourite players around the league, and they play in their own end first and a 200-foot game all the time and are very hard to play against,” said Miller. I think at some point, I’ve got to believe that it’s coming.” That rate this season is 72.24 scoring chances against per 60 minutes — about the same as his career average. The heatmap of shot attempts against when Miller is on the ice at 5-on-5 does not paint a pretty picture. The truth is that Miller has always been defensively suspect. Here’s the thing — Miller isn’t playing all that much worse defensively than normal. He’s getting caved in at 5-on-5, with a team-low 40.59% corsi percentage and a 27.76 expected goals percentage, according to

The hulking Vancouver Canucks defenceman isn't a speedster, but he gets to places quick enough to make life miserable for the opposition. He hits like a truck ...

Rathbone’s 1.03 points-per-game and 19 power play assists were fifth among league defenders, and he was named to the AHL all-rookie team. Poolman has battled past migraine issues and Dermott suffered a training-camp concussion. “The first 60 games, there have been 28 comeback wins and that boils down to a lot of teams not playing the right way and that’s something we need to be a lot better at.” Or, maybe those high-flying offences with an accent on youth, speed and creativity are putting defencemen on their heels and making it harder to win board battles, defend down low and cleanly transition out of the zone. The back end was signalled out by the new hockey operations department for a lack of structure and zone exits even before the puck dropped this season. Boudreau likens Canucks start to the Pacific-winning 2015-16 Ducks (Vancouver Is Awesome)

Bruce Boudreau has coached a team to a similarly dreadful start to the Vancouver Canucks this season. The 2015-16 Anaheim Ducks were 1-7-2 after ten games.

He has the ability to be an elite goaltender and make the defence in front of him look a lot better. The Canucks simply don’t have a defence as strong as the 2015-16 Ducks, so it’s unlikely that they’ll suddenly become a defensive powerhouse and limit scoring the way they did. The 2015-16 Ducks allowed the fewest goals in the league. The Canucks have been able to put the puck in the net, even though their power play has struggled. While they had four 20-goal scorers, their leading scorer that season, Ryan Getzlaf, had just 63 points and they finished middle of the pack in goals per game. The 2015-16 Ducks climbed out of the hole they dug for several reasons. The Canucks can’t defend the lead, while the 2015-16 Ducks couldn’t get one in the first place. The Ducks had just 10 goals in their first 10 games and were shut out five times. By the end of the season, the Ducks had won the Pacific despite their awful start. “And the good habits keep coming — you might still lose for a couple, but once you get those good habits down, then you start winning and you keep those good habits. In October, 2015, the Ducks won just one game — ironically also the fifth game of their season against the Wild. With just one game in their first ten games of the season, the Ducks dug themselves a big hole but they were able to climb out of it.
