3 takeaways from Toronto Raptors tight home opener vs. Cavs (Raptors Rapture)

There were so many reasons to come away impressed with Pascal Siakam and the Toronto Raptors during their opening-night triumph over the Cavaliers.

The Raptors blocked three shots on Wednesday and stole the ball 15 times. The Raptors are a long and athletic team that often shows up on the defensive end and on fast breaks. This team can get their hands into passing lanes, take the ball away, then race to the other end of the court. There were many reasons to come away impressed with the Raptors during their opening night triumph. Pascal Siakam started the season on the court, not cheering on the bench. Scottie Barnes wasn’t expected to play as well as he did at the start of the season, but many could see he had the potential to be special after opening night.

We know we can play with the best teams and I think we know we better play well against everybody. “I think we understand that we gotta really compete and those are all good teams (in the early season schedule). and the refs are going to start calling things. But a good start will buoy them with confidence and perhaps send a message to the stacked East that Toronto is going to be a factor.

Raptors face pressure to continue making strides as new season ... (Sportsnet.ca)

It's not as if this season is make or break — it's not title or bust for the Toronto Raptors. But it's definitely 'let's see some progress or maybe we'll ...

And the one after that and the one after that. You start doing the math on what a full season of good health for [OG Anunoby](/basketball/nba/players/og-anunoby/900535) and a full off-season of preparation for Barnes and Siakam could mean and presume VanVleet returns to the form that earned him his first all-star nod last season and it's easy to believe. "There were a lot of moves made in the off-season that ended up landing in the East… Last year was the spark to the fire, and this year we're just ready to just make sure that we piggyback off what we did last year, and just continue to improve and get better." Injuries were the source of their late-season swoon that saw the Raptors surge past them on their way to fifth place. After the opener, Toronto travels to Brooklyn to face the star-laden Nets, who may not have disassembled by then, before heading to Miami for two games against the Heat, who were No. VanVleet played the best basketball of his career in the first half of the season, driving the offence, anchoring the defence, and making threes at a Steph Curry-like clip. And then they added pieces to what should be a passable NBA bench in Achiuwa looked like one of the most athletically talented players in the league on more than a few nights and Siakam played the best basketball of his career from Jan. We have to make sure we take care of business each and every game... [Pascal Siakam](/basketball/nba/players/pascal-siakam/853408), who was coming off a concerning season in 2020-21 and off-season shoulder surgery to boot? Last year, the beginning was more of a learning process.

Toronto Raptors 2022-23 Player Preview: Will Pascal Siakam Take ... (RaptorsHQ)

Fresh off an All-NBA season and a full offseason to prepare, Siakam isn't satisfied. Can he take his game to the next level?

But Siakam bounced back and put together the best season of his career to date, followed by a spirited playoff performance that put many people’s worries to rest. He is a key part of the Raptors’ swarming defense — his length, blazing close-out speed, and feel allow him to quickly recover to the perimeter while the defense is rotating. He’s also a good help defender, not only because of his quickness but also his ability to contest at the rim. It would also mean more post passes would be swung to a good shooter, as opposed to the occasions when Siakam kicks it out and the ball is perfectly swung, only to end up in the hands of a wide-open, non-shooting defensive specialist. We want him to continue to grow in that aspect because that's what it takes to be one of the elites." As soon as Dosunmu gets in his face, Siakam uses his length to pass overtop Dosunmu’s arms to VanVleet, who swings it to Trent, who swings it to Anunoby for a clean three-point attempt: Siakam upped his mid-range frequency last season, and effectively uses the threat of the shot to his advantage. Even if he doesn’t quite reach that level, a leap that vaults Siakam into the top 10 or so is in play. But between 2020 and 2022, overshadowed by a magnified Bubble disappointment and overblown trade rumours, Siakam made big strides towards his top-five goal — most importantly, he became increasingly comfortable as the team’s first option. Some non-Raptors followers might not know it, but once he settled in post-surgery, Siakam played the best basketball of his life last year. [shared his lofty goal](https://www.sportingnews.com/ca/nba/news/pascal-siakam-top-five-player-raptors/uzf2bniqhka6gabieao0nzf2) of becoming a top-five player in the league, the instinctive reaction was naturally a strong sense of doubt. The top tier of NBA superstars is a transcendent group of players, and there’s no shame in being somewhere beneath them.

10 Things: Raptors complete exciting comeback on opening night (Sportsnet.ca)

After the Toronto Raptors' 108-105 comeback win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday, William Lou offers 10 takeaways on how the team looked and played ...

The only unfortunate part of his game was the foul trouble, which was in part due to his assignment of wrestling with centres for the starting unit. Eight: Save for a pair of clumsy drives in the first quarter, this was a perfect game from Anunoby. Hernangomez is on the floor for his shooting, which is in short supply despite the Raptors hitting 13 triples, but should be paired with strong defenders. Although his offence will still come and go on account of the inconsistency in jump-shooting, the one thing that cannot waver is his commitment to the defensive end. He jumpstarted the comeback with a pair of drive-and-kick dimes to Anunoby triples, and completed two drives where he was able to use his strength and length to angle around Allen and Dean Wade for key layups down the stretch. His first shift saw him completely turned around on a triple from Caris LeVert, launch an airball from deep, and then get stripped on a routine cut to the basket. The action involves VanVleet setting the screen for Siakam in the middle of the floor, before VanVleet flares out to the 3-point line. He set the tone early with his extra efforts on the glass, helping to limit Cleveland's size advantage, and his activity on defence was noticeably higher than his teammates. He powered the offence in the first half by getting into his improved midrange game, and he showed poise down the stretch by making the right reads. The next time down, Cleveland tagged VanVleet more closely, but there was a gap in the middle of the floor, which Siakam sensed and alertly drove it inside for a floater to push the lead up to six. To cap it off, [Scottie Barnes](/basketball/nba/players/scottie-barnes/1251666) made a hard cut to give VanVleet a target on the ensuing inbound, then pushed the ball ahead before Cleveland could foul him so [Precious Achiuwa](/basketball/nba/players/precious-achiuwa/1175124) could ice the game with a dunk. It was a tight game between two evenly matched teams, and it came right down to the wire.

If VanVleet is the floor general with the starters, Young is the leader of the young reserves. Young can be whatever the Raptors ask him to be. On any given night, he can crash the glass like a young Chris Bosh, zip a pass through a tiny hole like Mighty Mouse, or utilize his veteran savvy to get buckets like a not-quite-past-his-prime Jalen Rose. When the Raptors traded for Thad Young, he was a 15-year veteran with an expiring contract. “The plan was always to go back. Thad Young was the only player born in the 80s. That didn’t stop him from leading the team in scoring in his first full season with Toronto (a squad, mind you, that also had Bosh and Carter). NBA Pick 'Em: Why the Raptors are going to have their hands full ... (Sportsnet.ca)

The Toronto Raptors open their season Wednesday at Scotiabank Arena against the team that had arguably the best offseason in the NBA in the Cleveland ...

It escaped me a few days ago when I was doling out season-long tips for betting on the NBA, but I really feel like fans, the media and betting markets are sleeping on Phoenix. Utah is going to be bad this season, and they don’t have the horses to exploit Denver’s defensive weaknesses. The ideal role players to pair with the Murray-Jokic two-man game. I like the Spurs to win this game outright in an upset, so I’m taking San Antonio (+2). In Bruce Brown and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, the Nuggets have also added two role players who fit their system perfectly. Despite the Spurs' upcoming tank-a-thon, teams like this are particularly frisky early in the season. This means Cleveland will have an elite point-of-attack guard on the floor at all times if the Cavs want to stagger their minutes, along with an elite rim protector/roll man, assuming they stagger Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen. The Cavaliers relied too heavily on Darius Garland last season, and the young star will have another ball-handler to carry the load. The best defender in their backcourt is Fred VanVleet, who is more than capable of guarding Garland or Mitchell. The season is officially and truly underway. One could argue that Cleveland had the best offseason in the league. But if you’re into clean rotations, rim protection and great defensive coaching, this is the game for you, Raps fans.

Raptors Roundtable: On Barnes, Siakam and where Toronto fits in ... (Sportsnet.ca)

The 2022-23 NBA season could be one that defines the direction of the Toronto Raptors. Sportsnet's basketball insiders answer some of the key questions that ...

The Raptors have hit the over in 10 of the last 11 seasons, and 10 of the last 10 when they weren't displaced to Tampa. However, Banton is still new enough to the NBA (having been drafted last season and playing significant minutes in the G-League) that they may not realize how well-rounded of a player he’s become throughout the offseason. He brings a spark off the bench with a new level of confidence gained from being a leader on both Team Canada and on the Raptors’ NBA Summer League team. If these answers feel like cheating, Banton looks like a significantly more confident offensive player this year and is the key to that Raptors second unit being a terror in transition. It’s been a little bit of a quiet few weeks for him due to his hamstring injury (he’s expected to play the opener), but once Boucher settled into his niche as a high-energy disruptor off the bench mid-way through last season, the Raptors really began to benefit, and towards the end of the year his three-point touch returned too. More specifically, Siakam doesn't get to the free-throw line as much as you'd like for a top option, in part because he's traded some attempts at the rim for more of his floater and mid-range package. The return of his three-point stroke — as much a product of which shots he gets to take in the offence as it is any decline in skill — would help, too. Aiming to be amongst the best of the best comes down to how many high-level performances he can string together on a nightly basis. Take that skillset, along with active defence and a top-two seeding in the East, and Siakam will be in that conversation. He needs to play a lot of games (70-plus) and a lot of minutes (36-plus) in order to hit the kind of stat thresholds that will catch voters’ attention, which will likely be in the range of 25 points/eight rebounds/seven assists on good efficiency. But if he shoots for top-five and earns all-NBA (top-15) honours again, the Raptors will be in great shape, and so will Siakam, as he’ll be eligible for a five-year ‘super-max’ contract in the $300-million range. I think we'll know fairly early, too — the Raptors have a very difficult schedule to start the season, and if their rotation continuity can lead them to a strong start, we know this is a group that can find belief in themselves and play a lot of very good regular season basketball.

Some have placed his name in the MVP conversation, and Siakam himself said he strives to be one of the best players in the league, (which is way less of a story than people make it out to be). The Toronto Raptors bounced back from a slow offensive start to bank a crucial early season victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers to start the year.

Precious Achiuwa was the first to check in off the bench in the first half but was replaced by Koloko as the first sub in the second half. He hooked up with Scottie Barnes for the go-ahead bucket late in the fourth and a pair of crucial three-pointers in the final frame. Toronto went with the usual suspects to open the game as expected. Pascal Siakam made it clear he wants to be a top-five player in the league this season and his All-NBA campaign certainly started off on the right foot Wednesday night. “But we made our share of mistakes that we need to clean up and the schedule is not getting any easier.” It got pretty tense from that point as the Cavs worked their way to the line enough to cut Toronto’s lead to one with 4.5 seconds to play, but Scottie Barnes found a streaking Precious Achiuwa for a dunk to break the Cavs press and put the game on ice. The first step was -- in theory -- a doozy. Then come two on the road in Miami, two at home against the 76ers and the new-look Atlanta Hawks. The Cavaliers shot 48.7 per cent from the floor and made 10 threes to Toronto’s 13, which was the difference. After the Raptors knocked down four straight threes to start the fourth quarter to pull back from an eight-point deficit to finish the third, it was a gorgeous assist from Siakam to O.G. Siakam’s performance in the second half of last season was the prime mover in the Raptors' late surge and -- having pledged to prove himself as a top-five player -- he got off to a strong start against Cleveland. The Raptors will likely need all they can get from Siakam as they struggled to score most of the game from their half-court offence -- an issue for much of last season. I thought just in general, just their body language and the communication they were having, they were really locked in in the morning prep and as well tonight.” And the Raptors especially have to be pleased with how the fourth quarter turned out. Down by eight to start, the Raptors turned to their tried-and-true rotation with their five starters playing almost the entire period, the exception being Pascal Siakam who was burdened with foul trouble. “It feels good to not be teaching on the fly,” said Raptors guard Fred VanVleet, who finished with 15 points -- the lowest scoring total among the Raptors starters' in a well-rounded attack -- and five assists.

Raptors mount 4th-quarter comeback to defeat Cavaliers in season ... (CBC.ca)

Pascal Siakam had 23 points and 11 rebounds and the Toronto Raptors used a furious fourth-quarter comeback to beat the Cleveland Cavaliers in their season ...

Rookie Christian Koloko's first NBA basket was a huge put-back dunk that was part of a Raptors' run to tie the game late in the third quarter. A 12-0 Raptors run that straddled the first and second quarters put Toronto up 33-22. The Raptors made almost no changes to the team that found their groove in the second half of last season en route to 48 wins. "That one time we let our guard down, they hit us with a hook in the fourth. "And then we got pretty good shots most of the time down." "We didn't do a bunch of things that we can control, turnovers," he said.

Quick Reaction: Cavaliers 105, Raptors 108 (Raptors Republic)

Held back by foul trouble and a few errors that can be chalked up to youthful exuberance, Scottie exploded on both sides of the ball late in the game. Whether ...

It’s going to be a long and fun season and we should enjoy the rollercoaster ride of a campaign. - The bench continues to be an issue for this team. While we’ll continue to nitpick and overanalyze tonight’s game, my journalism professor reminded me to take a step back and chill. Outside of the one possession he dug down to help on penetration to force a Cleveland turnover, Jauncho was invisible on the court. While Raptors fans may not always believe in his offense and defensive philosophies, he does a great job of distributing opportunities between his five capable starters. The Cavs happily conceded those corner threes to Thad despite the vet knocking down the first one. Dalano has the inside track on the backup point guard minutes and while he had a promising preseason, Nurse went to what he knew and still played Fred VanVleet 39 minutes. Raptors fans – myself included – will push the MIP agenda but those moments that pop on the television screen that Precious often produces were non-existent tonight. He likely has felt like this since the beginning but Freddie played tonight like he no longer worries about filling the shoes of Kyle Lowry. When Cleveland erased an 11-point deficit to go up by two points, Gary created his own look on the following possession and got an and-1. It’s one thing to save your energy for the offensive side, but it’s a completely different thing to bring it on both ends. He was instrumental in the team’s strong fourth quarter, knocking down momentum swinging triples and being a nuisance to Mitchell late.
