Padres stymied by Phillies pitching, drop NLCS opener (MLB.com)

SAN DIEGO -- Back to reality. The Padres eliminated the Dodgers at Petco Park over the weekend, sending San Diego into something of a city-wide party.

[AJ Cassavell](mailto:[email protected]) covers the Padres for MLB.com. In all series with the current 2-3-2 format, teams that have dropped Game 1 at home have gone on to win just 30 of 68 times (44%). The Padres counter with Then a Kyle Schwarber moonshot that landed in the first row ... But he surrendered a pair of Phillies home runs -- first a Bryce Harper opposite-field shot that landed in the first row. was a date with Philadelphia in the National League Championship Series -- a particularly dangerous proposition.

NLCS: Zack Wheeler and Phillies Beat Padres in Game 1 (The New York Times)

Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber both went deep, and Zack Wheeler and Philadelphia's bullpen combined to allow only one hit in a hard-fought Game 1.

I’m going to continue to pitch like I pitch. The novelty there will be that he will face his brother, San Diego catcher Austin Nola — just as he did in a regular-season game — which surely will put their parents in an emotional and awkward position. Another Game 2 twist will be Snell starting for the Padres and facing Harper. Harper had given Wheeler all the breathing room he would need in the fourth inning by pounding a 1-0 fastball the opposite way over the left field fence. I’m going to pitch how I pitch. Harper knew Snell was not throwing at him but, rather, attempting to work inside. Realmuto was on the business end of a nice mix of mid-90s fastballs and low-80s curveballs as Wheeler’s dominating postseason continued. He also was the last. Wheeler came into the day with an 18⅔ -innings scoreless streak against the Padres and, over seven regular season career starts, had a 2.06 E.R.A. He is 11 for 26 with four homers and three doubles this postseason. The beat, and beatings, go on for Philadelphia, following the same pattern. It was the longest home run ever recorded at Petco Park, which opened in 2004.

Joe Musgrove and the San Diego bullpen allowed one hit against the Mets in the wild-card round clincher. But Wheeler had he Padres totally off balance, allowing only a one-out walk to Juan Soto in the first and then retiring 12 straight batters until Myers singled with one out in the fifth. It was left over the middle — it was up in the zone. Harper joined Gary Matthews (1983) as the only players in franchise history to homer in three straight postseason games in the same year. Still, they had a chance to win in the ninth against José Alvarado. The long balls by Harper and Schwarber were the latest impressive home runs for the Phillies, who are back in the playoffs for the first time since 2011. Darvish said it wasn't a mistake pitch to Harper, but added, “For Schwarber that is on me, that is my mistake. Harper, trying to reach his first World Series, hit a high-arcing, opposite-field shot into the first row in left field with one out in the fourth. “It was a cool moment, but I’m happy that we got the win overall.” Schwarber’s incredible shot on Darvish’s first pitch of the sixth had an exit velocity of 119.7 mph — the hardest-hit ball in any postseason since Statcast began tracking in 2015 — and was the first to reach the right field upper deck at Petco Park, which opened in 2004. “I’ve never seen a ball go up in that section in Petco Park. “I thought Darvish was really good and we couldn’t get much going, but Harper, three straight games with a home run, and Schwarber’s game was just completely flush,” Philadelphia manager Rob Thomson said.

But it leaves kind of a bad taste in your mouth so you want to get (back) out there as quickly as you can.” Machado saw nine pitches in his at-bat before he flied out to left. “We are going to turn the page on this one quick.” That brought Soto to the plate. The Rally Goose showed up, too, appearing on the giant video board in the eighth. The yellow towel-waving crowd of 44,826 did its part, exhorting the Padres with supportive chants throughout. “We had a couple of hard-hit balls but they were right at guys.” The first six batters were just .201. “We need to come out and swing the bats a little better,” Melvin said. He struck out seven and walked one. Soto, Machado and Grisham combined to go 0 for 9 with four strikeouts and one walk. “We always feel good when we have a chance to win in the ninth inning,” Melvin said.

Padres face big test after losing Game 1 of NLCS to Phillies (The San Diego Union-Tribune)

Padres mount little offense against Phillies, find themselves in a hole with Game 2 at Petco Park followed by three straight games in Philadelphia.

“We just have to do a better job of putting together better ABs. We’re going to hold ourselves accountable to that.” Against Wheeler and Co., the trio finished Uh-Oh-for-9. “But next time I meet him, I might have to punch him.” “If you put the ball in play, you never know what could happen. The ball traveled so far that a fan thinking about throwing it back would have risked rotator cuff surgery. The next became the longest ball hit at Petco Park, a 488-foot moonshot by Kyle Schwarber in the sixth that soared to the second deck in right. “They need to put pressure on them defensively. The Phillies did damage on two pitches against Padres starter Yu Darvish, who otherwise seemed playoff sharp. You’ve got the yellow flags going and all that stuff.” “They don’t need a message (before Game 2),” Melvin said. (Wednesday) is a big game for us.

The Padres look to even things up, while the Phillies are hoping to go home with a 2-0 series lead.

The Phillies are really set up well here with Nola going and the bullpen having not worked overly hard in Game 1, but I think we're in for a long series and the Padres find a way to strike back. Padres held to one hit, lose Game 1 of NLCS to Phillies (The San Diego Union-Tribune)

Yu Darvish allows only two runs, both on homers, but Phillies starter Zack Wheeler and two relievers blank Padres in Game 1 of NLCS at Petco Park.

At a projected 488 feet, it was the farthest a ball had been hit at Petco Park and the farthest a ball had ever been hit by a Phillies player since Statcast began measuring distances in 2015. The 119.7 mph exit velocity was the hardest a Phillies player had ever hit a ball as well. With two outs and Schwarber on third base, Padres second baseman Jake Cronenworth saved a run by diving to stop Harper’s 106 mph grounder in shallow right field and throwing to first. The Padres’ previous LCS occurred in 1998 and was played at Qualcomm Stadium. Darvish’s fifth strikeout ended that inning, and his sixth strikeout started the fourth. We need to come out and swing the bats a little better. “They know we need to come out and take at least one of these at home,” manager Bob Melvin said of the Padres’ players. Padres hitters did make a little history, as Tuesday was the first time in the franchise’s 48 postseason games that the Padres were held to one hit. Wednesday (FS1, 97.3-FM) before the series heads to Philadelphia for Games 3 and 4 (and 5, if necessary). To get there again, they will need to win four games while the Phillies need just three more. “It was a hard-fought game,” Padres third baseman Manny Machado said. The previous two times they played in an LCS resulted in World Series appearances.
