Koniuszewski: Mikhail Gorbachev's legacy includes the environment (Ottawa Citizen)

The former Soviet leader understood that security, development and the environment were a critical nexus for humanity's future.

The onus is now on us to build on his legacy. This staple was the fruit of the widest public consultation ever conducted to embody a celebration of participatory democracy for human development and environmental protection. At the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, delegates and summit organizer Maurice Strong, a Canadian, called for the creation of a Red Cross for the environment under Gorbachev’s leadership. Only then would his gift of freedom and democracy be recognized and appreciated. His reforms resulted in the largest non-violent revolution ever, freeing 260 million people and making the world a safer place. Article content

David McCann, once a ward at St. Joseph's Training School for Boys in Alfred, recently gave a tour to Ontario's chief coroner and others.

And, if you really want to turn the page to the next chapter in reconciliation, you’re going to have to deal with that issue of unmarked graves. Like a bogeyman story. But there are no graves.” So where, he wonders, are they? In any event, the same policy whereby the bodies of Indigenous youths who died while in residential schools were not returned to their homes was similarly followed at St. The Office of the Chief Coroner will approach investigation at the site in a step by step manner and will continue to work with our First Nations and provincial partners to ensure a principled, respectful and thorough investigation of unmarked burial sites in Ontario.” “Were there places here you weren’t permitted to go?” they asked, and McCann would show them. On this recent September day, however, McCann finally wasn’t alone, as he gave a tour of the site to Ontario’s chief coroner, Dr. For years he fought for a papal apology and, more recently, an investigation into the possibility that unmarked graves of former students, particularly Indigenous ones, are on the site of the one-time school. During his time at the school, McCann was raped and routinely beaten by the Brothers. Our school system lets our kids fall between the cracks because for years this position has been used as a stepping ladder for higher office. As a trustee, I'll advocate for students to have more control over their learning and personal development.

Incumbent Allan Hubley faces tough challenge in Kanata South (Ottawa Citizen)

When first elected by voters in Kanata-South in 2010, Allan Hubley said he would serve two terms at most on city council.

If you’d like to support us as we continue to provide journalism that matters for all Ottawans, please subscribe: Our parks are eroding. Our roads are eroding. He says his back to basics campaign will hold down taxes while ensuring city services work. Fattal has other ideas to keep the downtown vibrant, perhaps she says, by converting federal office space into housing. She wants better roads, longer hours at community centres and better green bin service at restaurants and businesses to divert organics from the landfill. Fattal considered running for council in the past but decided to wait until her kids were older. “Some people are afraid of that change, but I think for Kanata South it’s a great opportunity.” That’s a big day out!” she says. These are things a lot of these rookie councillors won’t know how to do, so I’m looking forward to helping,” he says. “I made an apology that I’d made that commitment and I’d only intended to go two terms. Monday, he’s vying for term No.
