GAME THREAD: Edmonton Oilers -vs- Buffalo Sabres (The Copper & Blue)

Attention to detail is key as Edmonton Oilers host Buffalo Sabres (Edmonton Journal)

Game Day 3: Buffalo at Edmonton Just 80 games left on the schedule entering Tuesday night's game against Buffalo Sabres, and already the Edmonton Oilers ...

- Stay out of the penalty box. - Show up on time, starting with strong defensive play from the very first shift. Local fans will be treated to a rare showdown between Edmonton-born netminders right in their home town. Skinner match-up stands in stark contrast to the skaters, where the Oilers have a significant edge in that department. The one antiquity in the line-up is goaltender Craig Anderson, 41, who is expected to get the start. They also have the longest active playoff drought at eleven seasons. A bigger change would be the Oilers staying in the game long enough to leave their two big guns on separate lines, after two straight games of being reunited in the first period in response to multi-goal deficits. Up front the big change is in the top six, where Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are slated to flip wingers. Especially true when it is the home club that is behind on the scoreboard. Didn’t seem to matter that both games were late starts, the Oilers started even later than that. After a pair of home games against their closest geographic rivals, the Oilers are, on balance, fortunate to be 1-1-0. Article content

Eric Comrie stymies Edmonton Oilers in Sabres win (Globalnews.ca)

Eric Comrie set a new career high with 46 saves as the Buffalo Sabres stole a 4-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers Tuesday night at Rogers Place.

Woodcroft was unable to provide an update after the game. “(Skinner) made some huge saves for us in big moments and we weren’t able to help him out. We haven’t got the job done in two of them, but we still have three games left on this homestand and we need to take a big step.” After the Oilers killed a penalty, McDavid had a shot from point blank with just under five minutes left. “We’ve got to find a way to get a lead and hold onto it,” Ryan Nugent-Hopkins said after the game. “But certainly through periods one and three, we liked what we saw.”

LATE HITS — Sabres defenceman Ilya Lyubushkin absolutely crushed Dylan Holloway early in the second period with an open ice hit near the red line while the Oilers rookie was looking back to take a pass from Warren Foegele. Eric Comrie will start his second consecutive game for the Sabres as he gets the start in his hometown. The Sabres are a very young team with 12 of their 18 skaters being 24 years and under. He doesn’t have a plan for every start all season. He was excellent, stopping all 31 shots he faced. The best defence is a good offence rings true for the Oilers when you look at O-zone possession time. Last season the Oilers led the NHL in offensive zone possession time/game at 7:37. Woodcroft feels one of his team’s best assets is their ability to sustain time in the offensive zone, but they haven’t done it as often as he’d like just yet. The Oilers need a better start, but they also need to limit scoring chances off the rush. The NHL doesn't go to the same lengths as the NBA when it comes to resting marquee players but it is a growing consideration.

The Oilers assistant captain was all over the ice, but as often as he was chasing a goal in Buffalo’s zone he was chasing down a Sabre from behind on a breakaway. In the end, if Nurse has a 25-point season and becomes a premier defender, the Oilers will go further than they will if he roams the way he did on Tuesday night. His greatest value is as a defender, and if he keeps the sheet clean in his own end, there are plenty of teammates who can score goals. This was a game we’ve seen Nurse play before, his willingness to carry his club is something you can see from perhaps the most distant press box in the NHL. Sabres.com's Game Preview: Buffalo at Edmonton (October 18, 2022)

"Our structure is based on skating and gapping so as we're moving our feet, it's going to be good. So, just got to get quick to our game and play our game." But we've got to stay aggressive, too." But we as a team have got to come together and play our game and play hard. "He played very well the other night and we're going to use both goalies on the trip, so easy to put him in with all that." "A little bit more of an attacking mode," Dahlin said. Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl both have Art Ross and Hart Trophies on their resumes, both ranked among the top-five point scorers in the NHL last season, and both have five points through Edmonton's first two games. So, a little more of an attacking mode, I would say." "He's here," Granato continued to say of Quinn. Vinnie Hinostroza will dress for the first time this season, entering the lineup in place of rookie Jack Quinn. Comrie was born in Edmonton and raised here until age 10, when his family moved to California. Dan Dunleavy and Rob Ray will have the call on MSG and WGR 550, with coverage on MSG beginning at 8:30 p.m.

[GAME RECAP] Edmonton Oilers 2, Buffalo Sabres 4 (The Copper & Blue)

Oilers give away the game in the first five minutes of P2; can't comeback despite furious third period rally.

RNH scored with just over 90 seconds remaining and the Oilers absolutely piled on the Sabres for every single one of them. With about 10 seconds left, Zach Hyman couldn’t pick it up cleanly off the corner boards and eventually turned it over in the slot. 1-3 after 40, with the shots closer to level at 24-19 in favour of Edmonton. Jay Woodcroft threw the lines into the Vitamix, Stuart Skinner went to the bench with about two minutes remaining. Holloway went straight to the room and the Oilers were down to 10 forwards. Skinner seemed to settle down as the period went along, which came in handy for Edmonton after Ryan McLeod took a penalty with only a few minutes remaining. At one point, Nurse coughed up the puck on the OZ blue, but then stormed back and made a play on Alex Tuch to disrupt the breakaway chance. Within seconds of the opening draw, Tage Thompson walked a handful of Oilers — including Skinner — and tucked home the go-ahead goal. The Oilers limped out of the room to start P2 and it cost them. Nurse picked up a loose puck in front of the Oilers goal and started the rush. A couple of minutes later, Edmonton drew their first PP of the game thanks to Ryan Murray getting his helmet ripped off. A few seconds after that, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins took a penalty, putting Buffalo on the PP.

Made a number of fine passes right into the blue paint, but Comrie did a brilliant job of sealing the ice. Took the skate of shame early in the game shortly after taking a hooking penalty that put the Oilers down 4-on-3. Very strong effort, but no finish whatsoever on a night the Oil desperately needed some. His biggest involvement was when he streaked up-ice on a 4-man Oilers rush, leaving just Barrie to mind the store when the puck suddenly went the other way. Was beaten from range by a well-placed Rasmus Dahlin drive to open the scoring. He went offside on one rush that was missed by the official but would have surely cancelled a goal had one been scored (Yamamoto dinged the crossbar). His most important moment was an unwitting one when his headman pass to Holloway put the rookie right in the trolley tracks for a violent hit. Had the puck stolen by Alex Tuch for a breakaway chance, but made a great effort on the backcheck to disrupt the actual shot. Led Oilers d-men in ice time with 21:59, 5 minutes of that on a powerplay unit that threatened but ultimately failed to score. Had a great chance to tie the game in the last minute but couldn’t bury. Comrie makes 46 saves for Sabres in win against Oilers (NHL.com)

Eric Comrie made an NHL career-high 46 saves for the Buffalo Sabres in a 4-2 win against the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place on Tuesday.

"In the second period, we made a couple of mistakes that ended up in the back of our net and we weren't able to outscore those mistakes," Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft said. We made a lot about the need to have a good start to the game, and I thought our start was better than the first two [games]." ... Lyubushkin left later in the period for an undisclosed reason, not related to the hit, according to Granato, and played one shift in the third … It wasn't the glove saves or the blocker saves or the post-to-post saves, they were throwing pucks in from bad angles and crashing the net. "I was just driving with some speed down the wing and saw some open ice in the middle," Thompson said. We can say all we want, but we have got to come out and show it on the ice. "Even a lot of the backdoor plays, it was surprising how many times they got sticks on the plays to make sure they weren't executing the plays they wanted to execute. "We just dug in in the third period and [Comrie] kept us in the game. Dahlin scored on a 4-on-3 power play at 4:00 of the first period to make it 1-0. "It wasn't pretty, but we found a way to win, and that's what this league is all about," Dahlin said. I thought we gifted them maybe two goals there; the kid (Thompson) makes a [heck] of a play on the one, and the other is just a straight gift. He made 22 saves in the third period for his first win with the Sabres since signing a two-year contract July 13.
