Marc Crawford talks about his desire to coach again, advice he'd give to his younger self and his standout players. Read our full Q&A.

Darryl is as old-school coach that there can be, but he has changed. He taught me more than any other guy and is nothing short of a genius in what it takes and how far he’ll go to win. But you don’t want to panic and let things slip away and it’s better to have these problems earlier than later. Why have these Canucks stumbled early? Your 2003 team here should have gone further in the playoffs. Looking back, what advice would you have given that fiery bench boss? But it sure is fun beating the other guy.” He also convinced Auston Matthews to play the 2015-16 season there, and had the best seat in the house as he piled up 46 points (24-22) in 36 games before becoming the first-overall pick by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2016 National Hockey League draft. He’s got 1,169 NHL games under his belt with stops in Colorado, Los Angeles, Dallas, Ottawa and of course, Vancouver. You have to have the juice to be able to do that and I still have lots of juice.

Capitals 6, Canucks 4: Vancouver collapses, again, in third period (The Province)

The Vancouver Canucks blew another multi-goal lead, this time to the Washington Capitals, and are 0-3 to start the season.

Obviously, I’m here now and it’s a lot of the same faces so it’s been really easy for me to adjust.” “He felt better today and he wanted to skate. Of course, the Canucks can’t kill a penalty so far this season, and yes, J.T. Canucks got a three on one after Nic Dowd fell down and Tanner Pearson skated away with the puck on his stick. You’d like to see a little more action in there, but this was a fine road effort. I mean, I must have the wrong guys out there, because they’re scoring in the first 15 seconds all the time. “Something where that has to be one of the staples of our game. “Having three leads on the road, two of them tie games going to the third period. “You gotta be confident when you have a lead, you got to be confident at all times. It’s Strome’s first goal as a Capital. The puck went off the side of the net and Demko’s pads, and went right to Lars Eller in the slot. The Capitals will be wearing their navy blue alternates for the first time this season. Evgeny Kuznetsov may not play due to the dreaded and undefinable “maintenance” classification. They’ll try to do so against Bruce Boudreau’s Vancouver Canucks who are in town and desperate for a victory.

Capitals Ride Strong Third Period To Comeback Win Over The ... (NoVa Caps)

Photo: @Capitals In a game that featured a bunch of odd bounces resulting in goals, the Capitals took the momentum back from the Canucks in the third period ...

The bulk of the shot attempts occurred below the circles and nearly in front of the goal. That trio skated the most together of any line during five-on-five play (10:45) and boasted really strong possession and scoring chance suppression numbers. Protas leads the team in CF%, FF%, SF%, and HDCF%. The other two lines are up in the air at this point if you keep the previously mentioned lines together. The Capitals dominated all of the statistical categories, scoring three goals during five-on-five play and allowing none. I would be extremely surprised if Laviolette didn’t pencil in the trio of Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov (if he’s not suspended for that egregious slash on Kyle Burroughs), and Conor Sheary as the top line against the Ottawa Senators on Thursday. The Capitals we saw in the third period played with intensity and purpose–something we all want to see much more of down the stretch. The 90.65 xGF% and 100 HDCF% is certainly amazing. The second period was much of the same, or even worse in some cases. The Capitals were a bit underwhelming through the first two frames of the tilt against the Canucks. [The first period saw below average possession rates, specifically in Corsi (CF%) and Fenwick (FF%) shot attempt generation. Typically, in these posts, we compare the two teams’ performances for the entire game during five-on-five play.

More than any other offseason acquisition, Mikheyev was supposed to help Vancouver’s putrid penalty kill.

are the teams that take care of the puck and the teams that defend well. A lot of guys spoke up and spoke from the heart. “It's just a matter of how are we going to do it and how are we going to get over this thing here. The only way is to become detailed in your own end and harder (to play against). But the only true way that teams win in this league and win championships is by defending. “It's pretty tough right now,” veteran defenceman Oliver Ekman-Larsson said as he headed for the bus and a quiet flight to Columbus. “The only way to win in this league is by defending,” defenceman Luke Schenn told reporters afterwards. They came at us pretty good (in the third period), and we just didn't handle it very well.” When you're in something like this, you're waiting for something bad to happen.” I've got to do better things, be a better leader, and eventually things are going to turn around.” Over three games, the Canucks have blown a cumulative 9-2 lead while being outscored 7-0 in the third period. The Stanchies: The Canucks can't keep getting away with this (Canucks Army)

The bad news is, the Canucks' defensive game finally reared its ugly head to let you know that it still exists and will be a problem. But not in the fun “Connor ...

Even if it was just him skating near the puck and waiting to see if he could jump in and steal it, it was noticeable all night long: Add in the fact the Canucks are asking him to play top minutes, and the fact he’s the guy who skates with the puck the most, and that’s a taxing burden on him. He can skate with the puck and run a Houston James Harden ISO-offense: I will say that Kyle Burroughs being the top DAWG two games in a row is not surprising. This was a bit of an odd goal because the puck gets stuck under Demko’s pad, so when he kicks his leg back to move in the crease, he ends up sliding the puck into the net. They had a lot of issues exiting their zone with control, and had too many turnovers as a result of this, but they skated hard and did their best to minimize the damage. If you’re watching a replay and wondering if it’s the Nationals or the Capitals, something has gone very wrong. If that’s Steve Bernier, he circles off for a line change, but EP40 is staying near the puck, trying to make things happen, a trend we will see later in this article. Ironically in what was the most offensively noticeable game for Pearson and Horvat was also their worst analytically. You can feel the tension in the city, not just about the losses, but in how the team is losing. The bad news is, the Canucks’ defensive game finally reared its ugly head to let you know that it still exists and will be a problem. It’s like that guy in college telling everyone he can jump off the roof and land in the pool but nobody asked him to.

It’s time for them to show up or pack it up. Of course, that can all change if they finally put the pieces together, remember what made them each great in the first place and turn these disastrous three games into a small blip during an otherwise successful season. [Bruce Boudreau said](https://twitter.com/timandfriends/status/1582194053113729024?s=46&t=0xqON-7mXxxqYgul5_fDRw)when asked about his team’s lack of confidence. Plenty of this reoccurring nightmare sits squarely at the feet of Canucks’ management. Even with all the strides the Canucks have seemingly made recently, so many of the same exact problems have remained constant throughout the last few years. And they’d be right, if this were a sudden new problem for a routinely competitive team. Ad Advertisement Not only have the Canucks scored zero third-period goals in those three games, but their mid-game collapses have been so thorough that they’ve yet to even be presented with an empty net opportunity while protecting a lead. Tanner Pearson put it very succinctly. The Canucks entered the final frame against the Capitals with a 4-2 lead, only to muster just four shots on goal, allow multiple turnovers in their own end, and give up four straight goals en route to a 6-4 Washington win. The Canucks have lost three straight games to start their season, each in a more embarrassing fashion than the last.
