'House of the Dragon' Season 1 Episode 9 Recap: Aegon's Conquest (Vanity Fair)

With Paddy Considine's Viserys gone, the Valyrian knives come out to seize the Iron Throne. Here's how the Hightowers' heist of the crown plays out.

Through all of this, House of the Dragon checks in on various figures dealing with the fallout of Viserys’s death. And so she sends out Ser Criston and her second son Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) to find Aegon before Otto’s veritable henchmen, the twin knights Erryk and Arryk Cargyll (Elliott and Luke Tittensor), can reach him first. Many are ready to step in and take immediate action, as Otto and his allies have been planning contingencies for this very occasion, unbeknownst to Alicent. In the middle of the night, Alicent and Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) assemble the Small Council to share the news of the king’s passing, as well as his dying wish to install Aegon on the throne. King Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine), first of his name, is dead. Episode nine of House of the Dragon fulfills the promise of the series’ previous eight hours, pushing the realm to the brink of a violent war for the Iron Throne, with the common folk of King’s Landing caught in the middle.

The Five Ways That Episode 9 of 'House of the Dragon ... (The Ringer)

Every ninth episode of a Game of Thrones season was a blockbuster. Episode 9s shocked viewers with Ned Stark's death and the Red Wedding, and delighted them ...

The final confusion of the episode came in its closing scene. The result is a scene that, much like “The Green Council” as a whole, left me bewildered, underwhelmed, and wishing I hadn’t placed quite so much hope in another amazing Episode 9. Much of the episode tracks the royal hide-and-seek game through the streets of King’s Landing, but the outcome seems predetermined either way: If the Cargylls found Aegon first, Aegon would sit the Iron Throne and Rhaenyra wouldn’t. And while some of this disorganization may reflect the greens’ desire to proceed to Aegon’s coronation as quickly as possible, the result is that most of the episode dramatizes less interesting material than the missing debate over who should rule the Seven Kingdoms as Viserys’s heir. “Yes,” Otto Hightower adds, “there is much to be done, as we’ve previously discussed”—which is how both Alicent and the audience learn that the Small Council has secretly schemed to crown Aegon for a while. Broadly speaking, “The Green Council” has a consistent through line: the greens’ scramble to crown Aegon after King Viserys’s death in the closing shot of Episode 8. That this change came about because of a foolish miscommunication is entirely out of step with how consequences typically transpire in this grounded story. But Otto and Alicent are on the same general side in this conflict. Episode 9s shocked viewers with Ned Stark’s death and the Red Wedding, and delighted them with the battles of the Bastards and the Blackwater. But “The Green Council” is an underwhelming mess, and the low point of an otherwise enjoyable first season of franchise television. That was the expectation on the screen, too, not least because of this episode’s title. But here are five overarching reasons the Dance of the Dragons is off to a lackluster start.

Why didn't Rhaenys Targaryen kill [SPOILERS]? 'House of the ... (Inverse)

"The Queen Who Never Was" had her chance to become "The Queen Who Murdered the Greens." What happened in 'House of the Dragon' Episode 9?

Or Rhaenys is being given the spotlight to do her most “queenly” act as “The Queen Who Never Was” and save the Targaryen Dynasty from imploding on dragonback. Princess Rhaenys is on the Black Council of Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy), who does eventually sit on the Iron Throne and become queen. Almost as soon as Queen Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) is sent word that her husband, Viserys (Paddy Considine), has finally stopped suffering, she immediately orders the Kingsguard to barricade the Red Keep, imprison anybody who works within the castle’s walls, and locks Rhaenys in her room for good measure. The HBO show departed from canon, choosing to make Rhaenys closer to her cousin Viserys, [estranged from her husband](https://www.inverse.com/entertainment/house-of-the-dragon-episode-8-corlys-explained) Corlys, and fleeing King’s Landing on [dragonback](https://www.inverse.com/entertainment/house-of-the-dragon-dragonriding-explained) to warn Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen of this flagrant coup d'état. Instead of being back home in Driftmark, or perhaps spending time with her Targaryen twin granddaughters Baela and Rhaena and “Velaryon” grandsons Jacaerys, Lucerys, and Joffrey in Dragonstone, she’s still in the the Red Keep when the coup begins. Martin, author of the source material and of the book series that gave us Game of Thrones, is one of the show’s co-creators and co-executive producers.
