Zack Wheeler Could Pitch for Phillies on Short Rest in a Potential ... (Sports Illustrated)

Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson spoke with the media prior to NLDS Game 4 against the Atlanta Braves about Zack Wheeler's availability.

He also indicated that the Phillies' ace would be available to pitch out of the bullpen in Game 4. Ranger Suárez could start that game too, he would be pitching on regular rest. Zack Wheeler has made 195 career starts, 197 if you include his two this postseason, but he has never started a game on fewer than four days rest. In a session with the media prior to NLDS Game 4, Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson said he'd be open to the possibility of Wheeler starting a potential Game 5. Should the Philadelphia Phillies drop NLDS Game 4 to the Atlanta Braves on Saturday, they will fly back to Atlanta that night for a Game 5 on Sunday. Realmuto led off the third against Atlanta reliever Collin McHugh with a deep shot to center field. The Phils can advance to the NLCS with a win over the Braves Saturday. Michael Harris II, a terrific defender, couldn't run it down and when it caromed off the wall in left-center, Harris was far enough away that Realmuto could scamper all the way around the bases.

Marsh Madness! Phillies beat Braves 8-3 in Game 4, into NLCS (The Globe and Mail)

Atlanta's loss meant Major League Baseball hasn't had a repeat champ since the New York Yankees won three straight from 1998-2000.

Morton walked out to the mound for the start of the third inning but could not get loose. Phillies RHP David Robertson hoped he could return to the roster for the NLCS. Syndergaard, bumped from the rotation at the end of the season, wasn’t asked by Thomson to do much other than keep the Phillies in the game. Syndergaard delivered with three strikeouts in three innings in a brief throwback to his commanding “Thor” days with the New York Mets. The ball hit the angled portion of the wall beyond the reach of centrefielder Michael Harris II, and the carom rolled along the warning track toward right-centre. The 24-year-old Marsh is known as much for his stringy hair and ZZ Top-esque beard as he is for being one of the top young players on the Phillies. Realmuto, who runs extremely well for a catcher, made a headfirst slide into the plate, well ahead of the relay. Thomson, who had been a career coach for the Yankees and Phillies, transformed a team well out of contention at 23-29 when they fired Joe Girardi on June 3. That’s right, the next stop for the Fightins is a trip West to the NLCS, as a team that looked completely lost in May suddenly looks every bit like a World Series contender in October. Then it was time for the Phillies to sing: “I’m going going, back back, to Cali Cali!” they shouted in unison to the Notorious B.I.G. The Padres held a 2-1 lead over the Dodgers going into Game 4 of the NLDS matchup Saturday night. “Like I told them, the goal when we leave spring training is to win the division.

World Series champs Braves fail to repeat, lose to Phillies (Toronto Star)

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Charlie Morton took a shot off his pitching elbow that was eerily reminiscent of the comebacker that broke the Atlanta postseason ...

Atlanta appeared headed for a wild card, at best, until it turned into one of the best teams in baseball and ended the season on a 78-34 run. The Braves have locked up most of the core that should keep them contenders for years. stood in right field watching the play, and didn’t start running toward the ball until Realmuto was well past first base. Realmuto hit a deep drive toward the angled portion of the wall beyond the reach of center fielder Michael Harris II, and the carom rolled along the warning track toward right-center. Acuna is tied to the Braves until 2027, while second baseman Ozzie Albies is under a cut-rate contract that binds him to Atlanta for three more seasons. Morton was hit on his pitching elbow by Alec Bohm’s single traveling 71.9 mph to lead off the second inning. Atlanta was 30-35 at one point last season before winning the World Series. “The goal was to get into the postseason. But they were in familiar territory. We did and it didn’t happen,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said. Much like last October, Morton tried to push ahead in his Game 4 start for Atlanta. Atlanta’s loss meant Major League Baseball hasn’t had a repeat champ since the New York Yankees won three straight from 1998-2000.
