AHL season preview: What to expect from the Coachella Valley ... (The Desert Sun)

Here are the things to know heading into Sunday's season opener for the newest team in the American Hockey League.

We saw just last season with the Kraken, who finished their inaugural season 27-49-6, that it takes time for an entirely new roster of players to have success together in a new arena, in a new city and in a new organization. How that affects the Firebirds during the first half of the season will be something to watch. During Bylsma’s run as head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins, he developed a reputation for making quick offensive adjustments in a scheme that emphasized speed and creativity. That is the early expectation Bylsma has for his team. Olofsson and Tennyson have each played for stretches in the NHL. Bylsma believes several other players have a chance to eventually play prominent roles in the lineup. But there’s still a lot of mystery about this team and what it will look like on the ice both this weekend and when the Firebirds play their first game in the valley at Acrisure Arena on Dec. McCormick, Poturalski and Lind are just three of the offensive players who’ll contribute to an aggressive, exciting offensive scheme that has helped several of Bylsma’s past teams find success. Even with so much uncertainty, Bylsma has an idea of which players will make up the core of his team, at least early in the season. They'll play two "home" games in Seattle, but the first 22 games will be played away from the Coachella Valley. Last season with the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers, the 5-foot-11 left wing played in 46 games, scored 13 times and added 16 assists. Following months of anticipation, the Coachella Valley Firebirds will open their inaugural season in the American Hockey League on Sunday in Calgary.

The Anaheim, California native has appeared in 291 career AHL games with the Milwaukee Admirals, San Antonio Rampage and Portland Pirates, recording 106-118=124 points and 115 penalty minutes (PIM). He set NHL career-highs in points (10-21=31), goals, assists, plus/minus (+10) and appearances (66) in 2019-20 with Nashville. Grimaldi, 29 (2/8/93), has appeared in 203 career National Hockey League (NHL) games with the Nashville Predators, Colorado Avalanche and Florida Panthers, recording 30-37=67 points and 34 penalty minutes (PIM) from 2014-22.

Ducks Sign Rocco Grimaldi To AHL Deal (prohockeyrumors.com)

Rocco Grimaldi's PTO with Anaheim has come to an end but the Ducks have signed him to a one-year AHL contract.

However, that performance wasn’t enough to land even a two-way deal in free agency this summer which forced him to go the tryout route with Anaheim. In 2019-20, Grimaldi was a quality secondary scorer with Nashville, notching 10 goals with 21 assists in 66 games which helped him earn a two-year deal that summer, one that carries a $2MM price tag per season. The 29-year-old had a strong preseason for the Ducks with a goal and four assists in four games which has helped him earn a contract.

Matej Pekar Loaned To AHL (prohockeyrumors.com)

Pekar, 22, was not listed on the Americans opening roster yesterday but his assignment today suggests he is now healthy enough to join the club. The young ...

The young forward is still waiver-exempt and could be assigned at any time after missing much of training camp. Selected in the fourth round in 2018, Pekar has spent the last two seasons in the AHL playing a defensive role. Those haven’t really come from fighting (Pekar has three fighting majors in the AHL), but they do come from a physical, in-your-face style.
