Scottish actor who graduated from the alternative comedy scene to become a major performer known for taking on complex and difficult roles.

He also indulged his interest in vintage cars in the 1997 series Coltrane’s Planes and Automobiles. Coltrane won the best TV actor Bafta in 1994, 1995 and 1996 for the role. However, Coltrane’s abilities as an actor were increasingly in evidence, and he had considerable success in 1987 with Tutti Frutti, the John Byrne-scripted, Bafta-winning TV series about a washed-up Scottish rock’n’roll band. These placed him firmly in the school of 80s alternative comedy alongside Ben Elton, Emma Thompson and Rik Mayall – an identity reinforced by his regular participation in Comic Strip Presents films including such key entries as Five Go Mad in Dorset, The Beat Generation and The Bullshitters. Born Anthony Robert McMillan in the prosperous Glaswegian suburb of Rutherglen, Coltrane was educated at Glenalmond College, an independent boarding school whose corporal punishment he described as “legalised violence”, before going to the Glasgow School of Art. Coltrane’s comedy skills began to take precedence, as he found success in the early 1980s in TV sketch shows such as Alfresco and A Kick Up the Eighties.

Coltrane appeared in all eight Harry Potter films as the gregarious giant Hagrid, a character beloved for his warmth and humor.

He also played Falstaff in the 1989 Shakespearean film adaptation of Henry V, directed by and starring Kenneth Branagh (Professor Gilderoy Lockhart) as well as Thompson. He won three consecutive BAFTA awards for his role as the foul-mouthed and slobby Manchester criminal psychologist Edward “Fitz” Fitzgerald on ITV drama series Cracker (1993–1996, plus a 2006 special episode). “And I still do,” he told the [Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/film/2012/nov/09/robbie-coltrane-interview-great-expectations) in 2012. Previously best known for playing gangsters and thugs, Coltrane suddenly had a legion of young fans around the world. “He was such a kid. In a fantasy series scattered with increasingly menacing villains, Coltrane’s Hagrid was a reliably bright presence. "He was an incredible actor and a lovely man." The Warmth of Robbie Coltrane's Rubeus Hagrid (The Atlantic)

The late Scottish actor never allowed the Harry Potter films to turn his character into mere comic relief.

“You wish there were a power for good in the world that was irresistible to the bad guys,” he said. He took pride in being a part of the staff, but ached to practice magic as freely as they did, and he often drank himself silly. Coltrane began his career as a comic, doing stand-up in Edinburgh and performing on the sketch show, Alfresco, alongside the likes of Hugh Laurie and Emma Thompson. In the role, Coltrane, already standing at 6’ 1”, had to perform with extra-small props and sets, don a padded overcoat, and stand on platforms to tower over his co-stars. The character, as written on the page, was a clumsy, delightful, and ever-loyal ally to Harry and his friends, his outward appearance and affection for vicious magical creatures concealing a gentle core. Such was the power of Robbie Coltrane, the Scottish actor who died yesterday at the age of 72, and who, to a generation of Potter fans, was best known for his work playing Hagrid across eight films.
