Why Bears QB Justin Fields Does - And Doesn't - Make Sense for ... (Sports Illustrated)

The Atlanta Falcons were left watching Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields from afar during Thursday Night Football, with many fans pondering what ...

Quarterbacks are often the most talked about position, and the Falcons opted to make Pitts the highest-drafted tight end in league history rather than selecting Fields. In Atlanta, he'd have Pitts, 2022 first-round pick Drake London, running back Cordarrelle Patterson and one of the NFL's most improved offensive lines. The biggest factor working in favor is that Fields fits what Smith wants in a quarterback, as mentioned above. The biggest roadblock to the scenario is exactly that - the odds that Chicago would be willing to part with Fields are extremely low. There's also the integral element of Chicago's regime - Fields wasn't drafted by Bears coach Matt Eberflus and general manager Ryan Poles. Atlanta Falcons coach Arthur Smith will lead his team into a Week 6 contest against the San Francisco 49ers, winners of three of their last four. Fields is working with first-year offensive coordinator Luke Getsy who, entering Week 6, had the offense attempting the fewest passes league-wide since 1982. 4 overall pick in the NFL Draft, with a brand-new regime spearheaded by coach Arthur Smith and general manager Terry Fontenot poised to make their first selection in power. Franchise signal callers are difficult to come by, and Fields more than has the potential to be exactly that. However, the Bears have a legitimate talent on their hands, and with the ever-growing importance of the quarterback position, seem set to keep Fields in the mix for the long haul. After all, if they do get “there,” it isn’t exactly a rebuild anymore, is it? After a 2-1 start to the season, Chicago has lost three straight games and is staring at a 2-4 record. Fields is in a pivotal second season, where he has no help along the offensive line or at wide receiver. Me personally, I’m tired of being almost there.” Live and you learn, and get back to next week and keep going, keep getting better.” And the frustration is wearing on Fields, who’s becoming impatient for these hard-fought performances to turn into wins. Tired of being just this close. “Everybody is feeling this way. It’s no secret that the Chicago Bears are in the midst of a rebuild.

There was a range of emotions in the Bears locker room after Thursday Night Football, from shock to frustration to despondence.

Harris interviewed for the Eagles coordinator job in 2021 and the Colts spoke to him as a potential replacement for Matt Eberflus. The Bears can continue to develop Mooney, but they need to add to the position in a big way. The last time the Bears defeated the Patriots was a Dec. The Bears, obviously, have a lot of heavy lifting to do at the position in the offseason ahead. Slater was projected to be the left tackle and Skoronski, one of the most high-profile recruits Fitzgerald has landed, was going to be in competition for a job. “In terms of him being sharp and his intellect, to put it in perspective, one of the most remarkable things about him is that he came in and was a Day 1 starter despite not enrolling midyear,” Bajakian said. “The reason he didn’t enroll midyear is because he was the leader of the pack for being valedictorian, so he wanted to finish the school year to earn the honors. Skoronski, a true junior, will have to consider his options at the end of the season. He’s not trustworthy at this point and teams are going to kick away from him and hope he tries to field the ball on the move, knowing he’s got a propensity for putting the ball on the ground. “Because of the toughness, the ability to take the ball and drive it down at the very end to give us a chance to win it,” he said. The Bears want to really dissect his play at the end of the season — they don’t want to do it Friday as they review game film and begin a weekend self-study project. “I thought this week there were a couple of plays that you kind of said to yourself, ‘OK, maybe there’s some incremental progress being made,’” Cosell said of Fields in the Vikings game.

For me, the ability to take the ball and drive it down at the very end to give us a chance to win it, that’s to me what was the improvement. Bears head coach Matt Eberflus went a different direction after the game when it came to assessing Fields’ outing, however. But we had the drives down there and if we punch those in, the game’s a different game. Was there other moments that we need to clean up and offense needs to clean up? Those failures meant the Bears lost despite outgaining the Commanders 392-214 and one might imagine that it would lead to the team’s head coach lamenting quarterback Justin Fields’ inability to get the team into the end zone.

The Morning After...the Bears' frustrating loss vs. Commanders in ... (Chicago Bears Wire)

For the third straight game, the Bears fumbled away their chance at victory. And for the second time in three weeks, it was rookie Velus Jones muffing a punt.

Bad teams have to play mistake-free football, and the Bears didn’t. There are so many gaps on offense, and at this rate, I’m not sure the team can rebuild fast enough for Justin to reach his full potential. I could be a prisoner of the moment, but I don’t remember another Bears game that was served up on a platter for an easy victory that wound up being a loss. Washington is a bad football team, and Chicago turned the ball over twice, resulting in points lost or a Commanders’ score. In the two games he was under 50% passing, they won. Their three trips into the redzone resulted in a pick off a helmet, a stuffed run at the one-yard line, and a catch that was an inch short of the goal line. It was once again the offense that cost them this game, as they scored just seven points and went 0-for-3 in the red zone. But the turning point was the fumble by Velus Jones Jr. But the Bears might have finally reached rock bottom following a 12-7 loss to a really bad Commanders team, a game they essentially gave away. muff his second punt in three games — sacrificing the team’s one-point lead — but Chicago came up just one inch short of a comeback win. And for the second time in three weeks, it was rookie Velus Jones muffing a punt. Instead, the Bears once again shot them in the foot and reminded us just how ugly things can get this season.

Bears report card: Grading offense, defense in loss vs. Commanders (NBC Sports Chicago)

Quarterback Justin Fields finished the night 14-for-27 for 190 yards, one touchdown, one interception, and a quarterback rating of 71.5.

But the ball bounced off his hands and chest. They did that Thursday night, They stopped the run and earned the right to rush the passer. Instead, Jones tried to catch it inside the 10. With the Bears holding the lead, the rookie needed to make the smart play, plant his heels at the 10, and not bring disaster into play. Pass interference penalties on Johnson and Kyler Gordon allowed the Commanders to get on the board with a field goal before halftime. The offensive line struggled to get a consistent push in the run game, but Herbert and Fields notched explosive runs. But he overthrew his tight end, and the Bears would end up turning the ball over on downs. There was bad: The interception in the red zone when Fields threw a ball off the facemask of Washington defensive lineman Efe Obada. The wind was whipping off the lake. Rookie Brian Robinson paced Washington with 60 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. The ball deflected off Obada's helmet, shot into the air, and came down in the hands of defensive tackle Jonathan Allen. The Bears' defense gave up just 214 yards.

8 takeaways from the Bears' pitiful loss to the Commanders (Chicago Bears Wire)

The Chicago Bears and Washington Commanders met up at a windy and blustery Soldier Field on Thursday night, their first matchup in The Windy City since 2016. It ...

Players continued to develop and the front office pinpointed areas of concern in the offseason and the Bears built a team that went to the postseason in consecutive years. But for now, this is what we have to look forward to for the rest of the season. He had nowhere to go but down and the Bears decided sticking with him would have been a better play than acquiring picks for the future. Just a reminder that Robert Quinn was never going to come close to replicating his 2021 success and that the team should have pushed harder to move him in the offseason. The result was a 5-11 season that had fans questioning where this team was going. This time, it gave the Commanders a very short field that led to their only touchdown of the night. But the Bears still forged ahead with trying to convert and a pass from Fields to Smith-Marsette was dropped, giving Washington the ball inside Bears territory with a chance to end the game or at the very least go up by eight points. Eberflus should have called for the punt team and forced Washington to move the ball deep in their own territory. The decision to sign low-risk players was understandable given the uncertainty this new regime had about the team as a whole. We’re six games into the 2022 NFL season and it’s very clear Fields doesn’t have the help or support he needs to progress as a quarterback. This loss to the Commanders was one of the worst games in recent memory for the Bears. All of that was on display when the Commanders defeated the Bears 12-7.
