The Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens kick off their regular seasons with a rivalry match at the Bell Centre.

If the Leafs are clicking, it’s likely Matthews and his line will be leading the charge. His 55 even-strength assists over that time span rank 21st in the NHL and he’s 41st with 71 total assists. He’s also dominated the Leafs. But he’s also developed into quite the passer. Matthews is +310 to score two or more goals, something he did 15 times last season, and while that’s enticing, it’s a bit risky. Matthews led the league in goals (101) and shots (570) over the past two regular seasons, so he’s a threat to score from almost anywhere on the ice.

Toronto Maple Leafs at Montreal Canadiens - Game #1 Preview ... (Maple Leafs Hot Stove)

The Maple Leafs look to open the season on the right foot in Montreal against a rebuilding Canadiens team to kick off their 2022-23 regular season (7 p.m. ...

We are going to have to manage our start and the excitement and the energy of the building. Regardless of the opponent, we want to stress the other team’s defense and goaltender as much as we can and spend as much time as we can on the other half of the ice. There are a lot of new players and a lot of young guys making the team. [Leafs](https://mapleleafshotstove.com/) enter the season relatively healthy after a number of injury-related absences in camp and preseason. It speaks to dealing with every single day and being prepared no matter who the opponent is or where we are at. No matter who we are playing every night, our job is to go out and stress the opponents’ defenders. Pierre Engvall was back before the end of the preseason after missing the start of camp with a foot injury (the same goes for Jake Muzzin after a back issue). [Leafs](https://mapleleafshotstove.com/) really can’t prove anything until the playoffs. Matt Murray will be in net against Montreal on Wednesday, with hopes to carry over his strong play from the preseason. It’s not a win-now roster, but the hope in Montreal is that the kids can develop into a core that management can build around going forward. Since Matthews was drafted, the [Leafs](https://mapleleafshotstove.com/) have gone 5-0-1 in season openers, including five wins in a row since Matthews’ historic four-goal debut game in Ottawa that ended in an overtime loss. [ Leafs](https://mapleleafshotstove.com/) have consistently been able to do in the Matthews era.

Eight predictions for the 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs (Sportsnet.ca)

It's all about the playoffs once again for the Maple Leafs, but there are many interesting things that could happen to this team in the regular season, too.

If they are, they’ll have huge decisions to make, ones that are related to the previous topic: what do they give up in the future to get better this season, to go “all in?” And can you have a GM in a position to make major decisions like that who you don’t trust enough to give an extension to? Or, there’s the other possibility that his pre-season showed signs of something the Leafs really need, and have in him now: a cheap contributor. [Jake Muzzin](/hockey/nhl/players/jake-muzzin/536508) is someone the Leafs are proud to have. If they get into a pinch where they need to add a player immediately – like at the trade deadline – would he be an option to go the other way? But the outcome the Leafs want – Murray both good and healthy, Samsonov good and healthy – probably isn’t the most likely one. Their current fourth line is David Kampf, one of the league’s best defensive centres, Zach Aston-Reese, a physical forward who’s earned Selke votes in the past, and Nicolas Aube-Kubel, a guy who just won the Cup in a very good bottom-six.

The excitement is still there. He draws penalties at a high rate, helping throw the NHL’s No. Bunting broke out for 23 goals, 63 points and was a finalist for the Calder Trophy last season. Now, the teams know who he is. “For him, the challenge would be not to get caught up in anything else other than what he can control,” coach Sheldon Keefe says. First, Bunting has a tight relationship off the ice and seamless chemistry on it with franchise star Auston Matthews — whom the organization will attempt to re-sign long-term come July 1.

If he can acquire a massive difference-maker and it costs him a really good young player, is he going to pull the trigger? Under Sheldon Keefe, the Leafs’ power play has been strong to start, and then it’s fallen off a cliff in the last month or two of the regular season through to the playoffs. If even one was to emerge as a full-time top-four, it would have a really positive domino effect on the Leafs’ defense. He has the tools to play the position and is at his most dangerous in the middle of the ice. Part of this is me also wondering if the team starts to feel a little stale. They should come in with a chip on their shoulder and their sights set on buzz-sawing through the league. This is the exact type of player the Leafs need in the bottom six – role players who are able to impact games in different ways. The Leafs won the draft lottery and he shifted to wing full-time, but there is a pro-hockey foundation there. I think it is important for Willy to get some reps through the camp and all of that. Would they move a core player, and if it happened, what would be the domino effect? [Leafs](https://mapleleafshotstove.com/) should have – but in lieu of that, this is the type of situation a team will find itself in. Our one question was whether they’d look to add a top-of-the-lineup defender – another difference maker – to the group and whether they’d continue to trust Jake Muzzin to stay healthy in their top four.

Toronto Maple Leafs: Get Michael Bunting That Long Contract ... (Editor In Leaf)

The Toronto Maple Leafs head into this year with Michael Bunting's sweetheart deal expiring at the season's end and it's time to lock him down long-term.

There’s certainly less effective players in the league presently earning way more than that and inked long-term. Kyle Dubas just needs to make it happen. The Toronto Maple Leafs should absolutely try to get Michael Bunting locked down early and for on a long-term deal. Simple fact is that if the Toronto Maple Leafs need to offer long term to bring his cap hit below $4 million; it’s a winning deal. The Toronto Maple Leafs should absolutely seek to capitalise on the fact Bunting is playing for his hometown team and while the term ‘hometown discount’ is often bandied about; perhaps a willingness to lock in a long-term deal speaks to that. In turn, it’d ensure that the Toronto Maple Leafs can continue to run one of the league’s better lines for the foreseeable future, and can only serve to help in future Matthews and Marner contract negotiations.

Thanks to the depth of the Toronto Maple Leafs roster, the Toronto Marlies are going to be awesome to watch this year and you should go see a game.

Obviously wins and losses don’t matter as much at the AHL level, but it’ll be a great development season for many Toronto Maple Leafs hopeful’s. He was up-and-down with both the Leafs and the Marlies last season, but he’ll be another player to watch who fans are familiar with. This should be a huge year for him to develop and it wouldn’t be surprising if he’s one of the higher scorers on the team. With so much NHL experience, Mete will have to prove he’s the best defenseman on the roster to get called up again or prove to the Leafs that he’s a valuable trade asset. By all accounts, this player will be called up in a few weeks and finally get their opportunity at the NHL-level, but it’ll have to wait. The 6-foot-2 left-shooting defenseman seems like he has potential to eventually crack the big-club, but time will obviously tell.

Mistakes were made and it is just one game, but Keefe is not letting the club off the hook. “It starts there and then the puck is just bouncing around there and we give it back to them in their own end, too.” They had a big third period where the game tilted in their favour and that helped them narrowly beat Toronto at even-strength expected goals by just over a one percent margin.
