NOTES: It is the fourth consecutive season the Oilers began their campaign with a home game against the Canucks … Kuzmenko is the first player in Canucks history to score a power-play goal in his debut. “That was pretty disappointing, I thought we came out pretty good in the first and special teams kind of cost us the game,” said Canucks defenceman Oliver Ekman-Larsson. The performance gave McDavid 701 points on his career — in just 488 games — making him the sixth fastest player to reach the milestone.

The Vancouver Canucks should have had more Wednesday, overwhelming the Edmonton Oilers in the first 21 minutes to build a three-goal lead, only to blow it ...

The power play wasn't good enough and we couldn't keep the puck out of our net on the PK. “I thought we came out really good in the first and I think special teams kind of cost us the game tonight. Hughes was still trying to gather his equipment and wits when the puck went in. I thought for the majority of the game we carried the play. The Canucks need to move beyond learning lessons and moral victories this season. “I think that was a good lesson for us. Five on five, we controlled the play the entire game. McDavid finished his hat trick into an empty net with 25 seconds remaining, technically Edmonton’s third power-play goal of the night. Connor McDavid, largely invisible in the first half of the game, finished with a hat trick. He and Leon Draisaitl won a game for the Oilers their team should have lost. “I thought we did a lot of good things five on five. I think we played really well and we're going to hang our hat on that.

A major break for the Oilers as they tried to close things out. 3-3 game as the Oilers come back to tie it up. Keep the kid, he’s a gamer. It was a brutal start by Edmonton’s new starter but he settled in nicely as the game went on. If that was a veteran I would’ve been all over him but, considering the circumstances, I will turn a blind eye. Luckily, the bleeding seemed to stop. The one-sided penalty calls finally came to an end about four minutes into the period. On the next shift, JT Miller took it down the left side and ripped a shot over Campbell’s shoulder.

With 4:59 left in the third, Zach Hyman freed the puck for McDavid, who buried his own rebound to give the Oilers the lead. The actual game starts at 8 p.m. Vancouver’s Elias Pettersson stole a pass from Edmonton forward Dylan Holloway and tucked the puck behind Campbell.

He came out of his net to play the puck and thwart a potential breakaway in the third. Stopped Pearson again on a breakaway early in the second and stopped Miller’s breakaway late in the same frame. He got beat on a breakaway pass to Pearson early in the second, then broke in for a 5-alarm shot of his own a moment later. He made a thrilling through-the-legs deke to gain the slot and launch a danger shot in the second. He allowed a pass into the slot for Horvat’s Grade A in the second. His hustle on the PK paid off in the third as he drew a penalty charging for the puck. He made a fine feed late in the second on a Bouchard one-timer. He made the Oil’s first good play of the game, diving on the PK to swipe a puck out of Edmonton’s end. He made a cool and deadly to feed to set up Nurse and tie the game late in the second. He came out of the penalty box in the third to set up Kane on a 5-alarm shot. He popped the puck on the forecheck, leading to a Hyman jam shot. GAME RECAP: Oilers 5, Canucks 3 (NHL.com)

The forwards, we're used to 11 and the D is used to six. We trusted our process and we wanted to play a more direct and more forward game. "It's great to be his teammate and watch the amount of work he puts in and the dedication he has to this game. It was the way it was. "I thought his play allowed us to recover and work our way back into the game. "It's not fun being at zero (points), so there was definitely the chance for him to get off zero and it was an unselfish play for sure. "I was pretty fired up and they got two quick ones, two goals I'd like to have back. Evander Kane unselfishly offloaded a pass to McDavid in the last minute with the net empty to let him cap off the hat trick. We've been a good powerplay for a real long time, we're comfortable with each other and we know where each other are going to be." The German opened Edmonton's account for the 2022-23 season with the finish on their first first man advantage before providing the 'tac' of a tic-tac-toe power-play goal that was buried by McDavid with just under six minutes remaining. You're not going to have the game that you want every night, and sometimes you have to win with your B- and C-game. Demko, who made 61 starts last season for Vancouver and earned 33 victories, is expected to carry a large workload again this season in the Canucks crease.

Canucks vs. Oilers Live: Pettersson, Miller score to set early tone (The Province)

[Patrick Johnston](https://theprovince.com/author/pjohnstonprov/) asked six faithful fans — who all expect to watch pretty much every game this season, either in person or on TV — how they’re feeling about the team. He pushes it to be better and has a standard and he lets us know if we’re not following it.” I want to help this team win, and for me, I knew I had to get stronger, play hard and do my part to be a teammate you can rely on. “I’m not the youngest guy on the team anymore and this is my fifth season. Simple math suggests the Canucks will need at least 98 points to finally get back to the post-season. It’s always interesting to see how those on the outside perceive the Canucks. Boeser, who had 23 goals last season and vows to hit the 30-goal plateau for the first time in his career, has recovered from a training-camp hand injury suffered on Sept. We’re going to try to play our game and dictate and make it them work to get the puck back versus just chasing them around. — GOAL O:49: Miller with the perfect cross-ice power-play feed to find charging Kuzmenko at side of the net for the easy two-foot, tap-in. Miller takes a pass from Boeser and wires a wrister to the far side glove on Campbell, who was on his knees and reaching. This is a noticeable improvement in his game to be harder on pucks. Canucks beat reporter Ben Kuzma is in Edmonton for Game 1 of the regular season.

PRE-GAME REPORT: Oilers vs. Canucks (NHL.com)

The Edmonton Oilers get their 2022-23 NHL season underway on Wednesday night when the Vancouver Canucks visit Rogers Place. You can watch the game on Sportsnet ...

"I think we've worked on a lot of great things and I'm just excited to go out there with the guys and compete for real in the regular season. The 2022-23 campaign marks the fourth consecutive season in which Edmonton and Vancouver will meet in each club's first game of the season... The American netminder suited up in 64 games for the Canucks last season and is expected to carry a heavy workload again this campaign in front of backup Spencer Martin. After having hand surgery in late September and being expected to miss three-to-four weeks, Brock Boeser is ahead of schedule on his recovery and pencilled in on the top line with J.T. Connor McDavid leads the team with 54 career points (17G, 37A) against Vancouver and has a team leading 37 assists against the Canucks... With a lot of young offensive firepower and an arrow pointing up, the Canucks are not a team to take lightly. "It's always a special night and you can tell there's a lot of excitement in the group. He'll centre the second line with Swedish countryman Nils Hoglander and NHL newcomer Andrei Kuzmenko, who looks to follow in the footsteps of Minnesota's Kirill Kaprizov and St. Although it was just a taste, it was enough to help the rookie settle his nerves ahead of another debut. The 6-foot-4 goaltender's mix of size and athleticism makes him a difficult proposition for an offensively-loaded Oilers squad. The Oilers begin a new National Hockey League campaign draped in expectations after last season's trip to the Western Conference Final. "Outside of playoffs, it's the most exciting game that you play in a season.
