Acknowledgements and Anecdotes for the NHL Size Project (Pension Plan Puppets)

If you haven't read “How big are the Leafs?” then I urge you to go do that. That's the interesting post, this is just the DVD extras, and that's nearly ...

And that irritating problem of the dynamic NHL database crops up when you want to dig into the past for weight data in ways it doesn’t for height. It should be a lesson to not do that, and not take anything from it to build narratives on. If you just want to noodle around, and have the patience for Youtube tutorials (I really don’t), you can find a lot of fun projects to give you a taste of what you can do with sports numbers. Is it a shift in NHL player size we just don’t see in the NHL as quickly? The means for the league overall didn’t change much, and most of the change was for forwards. If you do, you will be so far ahead of the game, you will be able to Stack Overflow your way to whatever you want to do from there out. I saw the way the results changed from the bigger set to the smaller. The NHL API spits out JSON, and if you don’t know what that is, that’s where you have to go next. Or for gathering it in the aggregate and creating sites like Evolving Hockey, HockeyViz, Moneypuck or all the long list of others that have come and gone. This has been an enormously fun and challenging exercise for me, and I wanted to share some of the work of others that made it possible. That’s were I started, and I quickly learned that most scraping projects involving NHL data are aimed at getting the live play-by-play data and making shot plots from it. If you haven’t read “How big are the Leafs?” then I urge you to go do that.

Average height and weight for all 32 NHL teams (Pension Plan Puppets)

They also keep these statistics in a dynamic way. In other words, if you go look at an old Leafs roster on the official Maple Leafs website, it will show you ...

The NHL has a standard size, and the variation in it, caused to some degree by variation in height, is minimal. We might, and it doesn’t escape my notice that the two very shortest players in the NHL are very talented players. Or are they biased by their emotional reactions to height — the same kind of bias that can be found in many areas of life, and notably hockey fandom. The variation in measurements between defenders and forwards is much greater for height than for weight. The higher peaks tells you that more NHL players cluster around the mean than in the blue group and there is less variation within the group. Are the scouts and GMs doing a good job of finding the best hockey players? It’s not useful to compare the weights of professional athletes with anyone else, not even athletes in other sports. The means are 73.7” and 72.9”, and notice that both are above six feet. But the difference in mean height between Denmark and Canada is one inch. Compared to the set of men they come from, NHL players look like this: This simulation represents well how tall men are in Canada and the USA: I’m going to tell you how tall the NHL is these days.

Maple Leafs vs. Canadiens: Live score, updates, highlights from ... (Sporting News)

The Sporting News has live updates and highlights as Montreal and Toronto battle at Bell Centre on opening night for both clubs.

- The puck drop for the Maple Leafs and Canadiens game is set for 7 p.m. John Tavares, who was expected to miss the first week with an oblique injury, is expected to play. — Here's the opening lineups for the Maple Leafs and Canadiens. No shots on goal and no real sustained time in the Toronto zone. — Another power play for the Habs, as Michael Bunting will sit for two minutes for holding Nick Suzuki. Montreal is able to keep the puck in at the blue line, then Josh Anderson flicks a backhand across to Caufield, who slings it on net and into the glove of Murray. The top line for Toronto gets the job done, as Mitch Marner finds an open Bunting in front of the net for the goal. — For the third time this period, Toronto is handed another penalty. It will be 4 on 4 for 1:14 before the Maple Leafs get their first crack on the PP. An excellent chance for Suzuki and Caufield on a 2 on 1 in the final seconds, but his shot attempt misses a wide open net. Their 115 points in 2021-22 were the fourth-most in the NHL.

Josh Anderson scored with 19 seconds remaining in the third period to give the Montreal Canadiens a 4-3 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs in the season ...

He was in front of the net to put the puck in after Allen stopped Tavares' shot on a rebound of Nylander's shot from the right point. "It's one of the most dangerous teams in the NHL on the rush. NOTES: It was the second time in as many days a go-ahead goal was scored in the final 30 seconds of the third; Vegas Golden Knights forward Mark Stone scored with 26 seconds left in a 4-3 win at the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday. Slafkovsky had one shot on goal in 10:34 of ice time. He made it 2-2 with an unassisted goal for his second of the period at 15:56 when he drove the right side and fired a wrist shot over Murray's glove. "It takes a couple bounces, it ends up right on their tape in the slot," Murray said of Anderson's goal. Caufield's first goal on a 2-on-1 with Suzuki 33 seconds into the second tied it at 1-1. Denis Malgin gave the Maple Leafs a 2-1 lead at 9:06 of the second with his first NHL goal since Jan. "It was a tough one to swallow in the last few minutes," captain John Tavares said. "It's a good shot, but one I should have had." "There's no perfect game; it's about finding ways in this league, and I thought the guys fought tonight and found a way," Canadiens coach Martin St. "I think it gives us some confidence and something to build off."

Alarmingly sloppy play mars season-opening loss by Maple Leafs in ... (Toronto Sun)

There's little arguing that the Montreal Canadiens hold the best pre-game ceremonies in the National Hockey League.

Not so much for Nicolas Aube-Kubel’s careless play that led to the chance. “I thought our guys hung (Murray) out to dry,” Keefe said. When the Leafs weren’t watching the Canadiens going the other way on odd-man rushes, they failed to take advantage of a generally inexperienced Montreal defence corps. “Tough one to swallow in the last few minutes,” Leafs captain John Tavares said. Ouch, but Keefe certainly hit the nail on the head. And how about those Leafs, a team with Stanley Cup aspirations that hasn’t yet figured out how to win in the first round?

"We preached on having a good start and I think that's kind of what we lacked a little bit last year, we were getting off to bad starts. Nurse tied it 3-3 at 19:19 short-handed, converting a pass from Draisaitl on a 3-on-1 rush. He took a cross-ice pass from Miller and redirected the puck past Campbell. Moments earlier Evander Kane caught Canucks defenseman Quinn Hughes with a high stick at the side of the net, which went undetected. "That stings a little bit, but I thought we did a lot of good things 5-on-5, and for a majority of the game, we carried the play and out-chanced them 5-on-5, but our power play let us down a little bit tonight," captain Bo Horvat said. We had some opportunities; two breakaways when we had a 3-1 lead and that would have made it difficult for them to come back. McDavid scored the winning goal at 15:01 of the third period for his 700th NHL point. Miller and Andrei Kuzmenko scored, and Thatcher Demko made 20 saves for the Canucks.

Vancouver’s 74.89% PK percentage was the second-lowest mark in the NHL last year. If Draisaitl isn’t taking the shot himself, he’s moving the puck to the likes of McDavid and Evander Kane. McDavid led the league with 44 points on the man advantage last season and Draisaitl (41) wasn’t far behind. The big forward is an elite goalscorer with equally impressive passing ability. At the forefront of that offensive explosion were Draisaitl and Connor McDavid, either of whom would be great bets tonight. [Skip Advertisement]
