Dodgers' closer-by-committee approach halts Padres (ESPN)

LOS ANGELES -- The left-field bullpen gate at Dodger Stadium kept opening up to a new arm that would introduce itself to a national audience this postseason ...

[Craig Kimbrel](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/30653/craig-kimbrel), an eight-time All-Star with 394 career saves, would hold down the ninth inning in October. On any other night it might be [Tommy Kahnle](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/31867/tommy-kahnle) or, perhaps eventually, [Blake Treinen](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/32185/blake-treinen) -- or any of the other arms who pitched in Game 1. [New York Mets](/mlb/team/_/name/nym/new-york-mets) in the wild-card round, asserted themselves early, scoring five runs within the first three innings and getting [Mike Clevinger](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/32769/mike-clevinger) out of the game before he could record nine outs. The 6-foot-8 right-hander recorded back-to-back groundouts, allowed a single, then got [Ha-Seong Kim](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/4089862/ha-seong-kim) to hit a harmless fly ball for the final out. The next batter, Myers, scorched a 100 mph one-hopper to the right side, but Dodgers second baseman [Gavin Lux](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/40423/gavin-lux) fielded it cleanly and started an inning-ending double play. Phillips was used in the most stressful juncture of the game, regardless of the inning. Then [Brusdar Graterol](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/40965/brusdar-graterol), the most famous among them largely because of his nickname ("Bazooka"). "Everybody in this group has that belief and that confidence that any one of us can close out a game," Graterol added. And then [Chris Martin](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/32903/chris-martin), whose acquisition from the [Chicago Cubs](/mlb/team/_/name/chc/chicago-cubs) in late July barely made headlines. The Dodgers, historically dominant throughout the regular season, entered these playoffs without an established closer and armed with a complex, versatile, largely mysterious pitching plan to combat that.

Padres-Dodgers Game 2 FAQ (Tonight, 8:30 ET/5:30 PT, FS1) (MLB.com)

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers continued their season-long dominance over the division-rival Padres with a 5-3 win in Game 1 of the National League Division ...

Follow him on Twitter [@ajcassavell](https://twitter.com/ajcassavell). Follow him on Twitter [@RhettBollinger](https://twitter.com/RhettBollinger) and [AJ Cassavell](mailto:[email protected]) covers the Padres for MLB.com. In Division Series with the current 2-2-1 format, teams winning Game 1 at their home ballparks have advanced 34 of 47 times (72%). Dodgers: Turner was the offensive hero in Game 1, going 2-for-4 with a homer. But the Padres’ DH platoon of Bell and Drury has combined to go just 3-for-21 this postseason. The bottom of the San Diego order has mostly been excellent, with Kim and Nola also contributing lately. Los Angeles should be in a good spot with its bullpen, though Alex Vesia could be the only pitcher unavailable after going 1 2/3 innings in Game 1. Dodgers: Not much will change in the Dodgers’ lineup. Kershaw was stellar against the Padres this season, going 1-0 with a 0.75 ERA in two starts against the division rivals. Padres right-hander Mike Clevinger struggled, but San Diego’s bullpen combined to throw 5 1/3 hitless innings. Darvish has been the Padres’ most reliable starter all season and, in his last start at Dodger Stadium, he pitched seven scoreless, while making a bit of history, as he recorded his 3,000th career strikeout between Japan and MLB. And Darvish, who had strong numbers against the Dodgers in the regular season with a 2.52 ERA in four starts, is hoping to even the five-game series before it heads back to San Diego for Game 3 on Friday.

Padres Lose to Dodgers in NLDS Game 1 (The New York Times)

Built and rebuilt (and rebuilt again) to compete with “the dragon up the freeway,” San Diego believes its frustration could melt away — it just has to win ...

Two years later, as the Padres continue chasing the Dodgers, Clevinger is playing a big role in two playoff series. “That’s probably the funnest part of the night, to be honest,” Clevinger said of the roaring atmosphere. The Dodgers swept the Padres in three games and Clevinger wound up having Tommy John surgery that November. After beating the Mets in Citi Field and now playing in Dodger Stadium, the Padres certainly have seen what October life is like on the other side. But four Padres relievers combined to throw five and a third scoreless innings, setting down the last 14 Dodgers in a row. Instead, the Dodgers scored twice before the Padres even had a hit — then tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the third. No moral victories, but the latter part of the game was better than the first part for us.” One side’s lot in life is to play the foil. in that World Series and was subjected to ugly boos and catcalls by the end of it, said through a translator at Dodger Stadium. No matter that the Dodgers won 14 of 19 against the Padres this year, outscored them cumulatively, 109-47, and finished 22 games in front of them in the N.L. So six pitches into the bottom of the first in Game 1, shortstop Trea Turner creamed a meaty Clevinger fastball, depositing it over the left field fence. He called Dodger Stadium home for half a season after Los Angeles acquired him from Texas at the trade deadline in 2017.

Dodgers' closer du jour: Ohtani's ex-teammate, Chris Martin (Los Angeles Times)

Chris Martin, 36, notched his first postseason save in the Dodgers' win Tuesday. His journey included two years in Japan as Shohei Ohtani's teammate.

In the late hours of Tuesday night, Martin had a ball for his first postseason save. He pitched two full seasons with the Nippon Ham Fighters, with a 1.07 ERA the first year and a 1.16 ERA the next. I was a little bit older, and I understood the situation I was in.” In the absence of Kimbrel, the Dodgers are all about the matchups, and the analytics. He signed his first contract with a major league organization at 24 and made his major league debut at 27. In 2016, Ohtani hit .322, with 22 home runs and posted a 1.86 ERA. That was not the role the Dodgers envisioned for him when they traded for him. Martin was drafted twice but did not sign, then hurt his shoulder, worked at Lowe’s and UPS, and eventually landed a spot on the independent Grand Prairie AirHogs in Texas. Never really contemplated the ninth at that point, but he’s come in and fit in extremely well with our group and thrived.” At the trade deadline, the Dodgers and San Diego Padres each acquired a reliever. Martin said Josh Bard, the Dodgers’ bullpen coach, helps each reliever see the most likely spots for him in each game. To great fanfare, the Padres got Josh Hader, a four-time All-Star.

Dodgers win, but get a good scare from Padres in NLDS Game 1 (Los Angeles Times)

The Dodgers' 5-3 win over the Padres in Game 1 of the NLDS had it all and could be a preview of a memorable October for the home team.

He not only homered in the first, but doubled and scored in the third. Even though he recorded an ERA of 2.16 and was 3-0 with a 1.50 ERA in four starts against the Padres, some wondered whether this new adventure would be too big. Urías was cruising through four one-hit innings when he and his curveball found trouble in the fifth. It occurred with Evan Phillips on the mound, making only the third postseason appearance of his career and first in a high-leverage situation. “It takes two to tango with the double play,” he said. “I thought it was past gap but Gavin got a good jump on it,” said the Dodgers’ manager. About 10 minutes after the first pitch, Turner shook the stadium and his critics with a home run into the left-field pavilion. The fear was that real. Dodger Stadium was still shaking off the remnants of a rousing pregame show and settling in for the first game of the National League Division Series between the Dodgers and San Diego Padres and … In their effort to accumulate the 11 postseason victories required to win a World Series championship, it was a somewhat shaky first step, but maybe shaky is good. Can he keep the Dodgers’ trust?](https://www.latimes.com/sports/dodgers/story/2022-10-11/dodgers-padres-julio-urias-game-1-nlds) Trailing by those five runs after three innings, the Padres could have quit but didn’t, fighting back to put the potential tying run on base in the sixth.

Trea Turner, Dodgers start fast, hold off Padres in NLDS opener (Boston.com)

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The well-rested Los Angeles Dodgers raced out to a big lead early and hung on against the upstart San Diego Padres.

RH Yu Darvish, who had a 3.10 ERA in the regular season, starts Game 2 for the Padres. The wind picked up in the last couple innings, with the center-field flags blowing straight out. I’ll probably talk to him after the series is over and in the offseason.” The right-hander struck out three and walked two. Turner and Soto greeted each other briefly before the game. Bellinger was called back to the plate and Muncy returned to third. I’m coming across the bag, so he has to make a good throw to me as well. Gavin Lux doubled to the right-field corner with two outs, driving in Smith and chasing Mike Clevinger. “They did a good job battling, getting those runs early and putting us in a good spot to win.” The Dodgers hadn’t played a must-win game since mid-June before running away with the division. Los Angeles dominated in the regular season, owning a 14-5 advantage and outscoring San Diego 109-47. Choking up, Cody Bellinger initially was thought to have been hit by a pitch and took first base as Muncy was forced in.
