It wasn't pretty but the Eagles were able to leave Arizona with a 20-17 win over the Cardinals. By Dave Zangaro.
And on defense, it felt like the Eagles were too conservative with a lead again. On offense, we knew the Cardinals were going to blitz and it still seemed like the Eagles weren’t ready for it. Sure, the Cardinals converted a desperation fake punt in this game and that’s a loss for the Eagles’ special teams unit and, yeah, Britain Covey muffed another punt. The Eagles’ secondary was fine in this game; it felt like some of their completions were more to blame on scheme. Gardner-Johnson picked up that INT, his first as a member of the team. The Eagles entered Week 5 with the most sacks in the NFL (16) but recorded just one in this game. Another dynamic performance from Goedert, one that included a big catch on a crucial 3rd-and-12 in the fourth quarter. Still, Hurts did enough for the Eagles to get a win. Smith ended up catching a career-high 10 passes but he did have a pretty big drop in the second half. The entire pass game was a little disjointed on Sunday and really struggled to get much going. They ran a ton of screens and I kept waiting for the deep shot to follow and it never came. But the nature of this game made it pretty hard to grade.

That kept the drive alive and eventually led to a 20-yard field goal by Matt Ammendola. Hurts led the Eagles with 61 rushing yards on 15 carries, but the real damage were the pair of 1-yard touchdown runs he scored that put the Cardinals behind early, 14-0. More designed run calls for him have to be a part of the plan moving forward. No, but he made the most out of his top three targets in Marquise Brown (eight receptions, 78 yards and a TD), Rondale Moore (seven catches, 68 yards) and Zach Ertz (six catches, 48 yards). The pick, which came during a deep shot in the first quarter, didn’t hurt the Cardinals as the Eagles went three and out on their ensuing possession. The Cardinals might have rushed for a total of 124 yards, but they haven’t had a runner dominate a single game yet through the first five weeks.

Arizona was on the march having picked up a pair of first downs to reach midfield. Marquise Brown had a nice day with eight catches for 78 yards, but it was the catch he didn’t make that hurt. “That’s why everyone got set for the spike, then they moved the ball back a little bit and from there the operation was so far gone that we had no other choice with the clock winding down.” On the Cardinals’ last drive to attempt to tie or take the lead, QB Kyler Murray thought he had run for a first down. Thinking it was first-and-10, Murray spiked the ball and that made it fourth down, leaving Arizona coach Kliff Kingsbury to send in the field goal team for a 43-yard that we all know what happened then. I was going to do whatever I could to get the first down, keep the chains moving, keep the clock ticking.”
Jalen Hurts and Lane Johnson are the only Eagles players who haven't missed a snap on offense this year. DeVonta Smith nearly played the entire game. He led all ...
This was his most efficient game of the year on the ground with a 6.7 average. - Marcus Epps is the only Eagles player who hasn’t missed a defensive snap this year. - Cameron Dicker is incorrectly listed as a punter in the NFL’s official snap count log. It was the first time he didn’t start a game he played in since Week 9 of the 2020 season. He did not log a stat. - Quez Watkins’s four targets marked a season high but he only had three catches for 19 yards. Then it felt like the Eagles didn’t really make a big effort to get him the ball the rest of the day? For the first time all season, he was not on the field to officially start the game. Then the Eagles targeted him on three straight plays, two of which went for first downs before he dropped a pass on his third look. - Sua Opeta had to enter the game twice when Landon Dickerson got hurt early and then again late. The only target he didn’t catch was a drop. He led all Eagles players in targets with 11, catching 10 of them for 87 yards.
The Eagles' game plan, or at least the way their offensive play-calling unfolded when the wide receiver was either involved or not, was peculiar.
But the Cardinals were a weaker foe and there were mismatches for Sirianni and his coaches to exploit all over the field. Murray spiked the ball on third down with 22 seconds left and the Cardinals were forced to try a 43-yard field goal. But Murray went at Gardner-Johnson, who was matched up against speedy receiver Marquise Brown, and he lost him and then couldn’t tackle him when he cut, and the receiver scored a 25-yard touchdown. The Cardinals had one of the lowest per-yard-pass-attempt averages entering the game, and it made sense to force Murray downfield. My guess is he was also trying to compensate for his defense after the Cardinals had scored 17 points on three of their four previous possessions. But the Eagles faced third-and-12 on the Arizona 36. But the Cardinals adjusted and Sirianni and company didn’t — until the final series. Some of the responsibility fell on Hurts’ shoulders for recognizing four-man-plus rushes, and running back Kenny Gainwell struggled again to pick up a few blitzes. Brown wasn’t on the field for the first four plays of the game and when he finally did get a snap, quarterback Jalen Hurts targeted him on his next three passes. It’s not a bad formula, but why not a few screens to their best receiver after the catch? And the Eagles ultimately won. Sirianni talks about the importance of explosive plays all the time and the Eagles finished with just one 25-yard-plus pass play — a 31-yarder to Goedert.
