The Breakdown: Five Thoughts After Ravens' Win Over Bengals (BaltimoreRavens.com)

The Ravens needed this win after what they've been through. Faith in Justin Tucker is never misplaced. Lamar Jackson showed one of his best traits on a ...

Still, there was good reason to believe this might be a high-scoring affair considering the firepower the Bengals have on offense and the fact that Baltimore's defense entered the game ranked last in the league. The Ravens' free-agent addition is looking like a good move and more pass-rush reinforcements are on the way. 6) Just as bad as the Ravens needed this win, Patrick Queen needed that interception. Peters brought the flashy gold cleats and his energy was off the chain, helping the defense get off on the right foot. Jackson said he'll be "mad at the film" after a game like this, in which he finished 19-of-32 for 174 yards with one touchdown, one interception and 58 yards rushing. His second quarter interception short-circuited the Ravens' early momentum when they built a 10-0 lead and were driving for more. The scales tipped that way again when, with the Ravens leading by three points, Harbaugh decided to send Tucker out for the chip-shot 25-yard field goal instead of go for it on fourth-and-1 from the Cincinnati 3-yard line. The defense got a huge stop on the goal line on the Bengals' next-to-last drive. It's a great win over a very strong team that was in last year's Super Bowl and took it to the injury-depleted Ravens twice last year. "But in the end, the scale tipped towards Justin," Harbaugh said. This team is very talented, but it needed that kind of win after the early-season heartbreaks. Nobody is winning the division in October and nobody lost it either.

Ravens' Justin Tucker gets philosophical on kicking following game ... (Sporting News)

The Ravens and Bengals played to the final possession of their Week 5 "Sunday Night Football" matchup, when it came down to Tucker's leg.

But it's really important to me, and to us, to take those 1.3 seconds between the snap, the hold and the kick and just focus on the nuts and bolts on what's going to make the kick. And then from there I'm just a system kicker, the ball kicks itself at that point. All we're really thinking about is those things that are going to make the kick.

- He is the only kicker since 2000 to be perfect on field goals in the final minute of the fourth quarter or OT (minimum 15-plus such attempts). With the game tied, 10-10, at the time, a miss from that distance would have given the Bengals the ball at midfield. Using Next Gen Stats ball-tracking data, Tucker's game-winning field goal went through 5.4 inches off of the exact center of the uprights, meaning if the uprights were half a yard wide, the kick would have still been good, per NFL Research. [Joe Burrow](https://www.nfl.com/players/joe-burrow/)'s goal-line sneak gave the Bengals a one-point lead with just under two minutes remaining, it almost felt like a fait accompli that the game would come down to Tucker's foot. He also bashed a 58-yarder in the third quarter. "This was a big team win that we needed to have, division opponent.

Ravens kicker Justin Tucker showed why he is the GOAT in win over ... (USA TODAY)

Let's start calling the Baltimore Ravens' Justin Tucker what he is: the greatest NFL kicker who ever lived.

"Not to ask for results," Tucker said. Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson methodically drove his team down the field, toeing the line between draining clock and moving close enough for a Tucker attempt. The choice to send Tucker out for that kick, coach John Harbaugh said, was tougher than it would seem, even for a kicker of Tucker's caliber. "That was not an easy choice," Harbaugh said. With 10:49 to go in the third quarter, the Texas Longhorns product delivered a highlight-reel, 58-yard missile that effortlessly sailed through the clear, windless night for three more points. He now has 52 career field goals from 50 yards or beyond, tying Jason Hanson for third most in NFL history behind Matt Prater (66) and Sebastian Janikowski (58). The ease with which he kicks, however, is the true hallmark of his greatness. The heroics were just starting, though. – consecutive field goals in the fourth quarter or overtime, the Baltimore Ravens kicker pounded his knuckles into the mahogany podium he leaned against. "Man," Tucker said not long after his 43-yard field goal as time expired lifted his team over the Cincinnati Bengals, 19-17, on Sunday Night Football. Must the greatest kicker who ever lived – let's start calling him what he is – need superstition on his side? "He is human.

Ravens News 10/10: Tenacious Defense and more (Baltimore Beatdown)

Still, there was good reason to believe this might be a high-scoring affair considering the firepower the Bengals have on offense and the fact that Baltimore’s defense entered the game ranked last in the league. This often-maligned group turned in a strong effort against one of the best receiving groups in the NFL. It was mostly screens and check-downs to the running backs that hurt Baltimore in the second half. It was Tucker’s fourth make in as many tries on a night in which the Ravens avoided squandering a double-digit lead for the third time this year. That can’t always happen and it didn’t in this one, but this time around the Ravens were able to lean on defense and special teams to prevail. It was also a night in which Baltimore’s defense should be lauded; lauded for a huge goal-line stand in the third quarter and holding the Bengals to 17 points and 291 yards on nine possessions. Right tackle Morgan Moses had a strong game, especially in the first half. In an old-fashioned AFC North donnybrook, the Ravens emerged Sunday night with a win and in first place thanks to some tenacious defense and the best kicker in the NFL world. Stanley ran well when he played, and the Ravens’ pass blocking held up for most of the game as the Bengals recorded only one sack. No one should go that far, but it was huge that the Ravens didn’t fold this time. “We knew that all we had to do was move the ball a little bit and he was going to have our back with the kick. However, it was a bluff as Baltimore was trying to get the Bengals to jump offside.

Ravens Safety Marcus Williams Suffered Dislocated Wrist (Sports Illustrated)

The Ravens are expecting safety Marcus Williams to miss a "significant amount of time" with a dislocated wrist he suffered in Week 5 against the Bengals.

"We rotated some of our coverage in his way and stuff like that, and we had a couple double teams, but really for the most part, you can’t overdo it because they have a lot of good receivers out there. "So, we played well across the board; we covered him singled up numerous times. "So, we’ll know more tomorrow and through the week.”

The Ravens faced fourth-and-1 from the 3 in the fourth, but instead of going for it, Baltimore kicked a short field goal that made it 16-10. “Also, you’ve got to save a little bit for the end of the game too. ... Ravens S Marcus Williams left with a dislocated wrist, and Harbaugh expects him to miss a significant amount of time. It was a remarkable turnaround for the Baltimore defense, which allowed 41 points in each of two losses last year to the AFC champion Bengals. Jackson finished 19 of 32 for 174 yards with a touchdown and an interception, and he rushed 12 times for 58 yards. A third-down completion put the Bengals back at the 2, but then a shovel pass on fourth down went incomplete. Jackson shook off a rough night passing, leading the Ravens with his arm and his legs on the winning drive. “I’ve celebrated in many a humorous way over the years,” he said. The other is when Justin Tucker comes on the field to attempt a game-winning kick. The Ravens squandered a 10-point lead in this one but recovered. “What matters in those 1.3 seconds between snap, hold and the kick, are the things that are going to help the kick go through the uprights,” Tucker said. Tucker’s game-winner extended his streak to 61 straight successful field goals in the fourth quarter and overtime.

The Ravens got past the Bengals, but they still have problems to fix (Deadspin)

But all of those stats will be for naught if in a divisional playoff game this elite rushing offense blows a late 4th and 1, or gets called for a holding penalty on a drive that was on a steady march toward the end zone. When it’s time to hit the opposition with the finishing move, they had better be able to do it out of the backfield. They can control the ball, but then they can’t punch it in the end zone to finish drives. They have the most dangerous threat with the ball in his hands in the NFL in Lamar Jackson, and their top running back — J.K. They were up 10 points and a touchdown could’ve put the game away early. They even had to sign Jason Pierre-Paul after the start of the regular season to try and muster a respectable pass rush.
