From a money standpoint, Kostin carries a $750,000 cap-hit for the following season, which is $25 thousand less than Samorukov’s $775,000. These aren't sparkling numbers for the 23-year-old Russian but they aren’t exactly terrible—more mediocre than anything else. He is a former first-round draft pick of the Blues. Yet, could there be something hidden in Kostin’s game that makes him valuable? Kostin was drafted 31st overall in 2017 & has scored 11 points (5 goals, 6 assists) in 46 career NHL games.

St. Louis Blues Mercifully Trade Klim Kostin To Edmonton (Bleedin' Blue)

When the St. Louis Blues drafted Klim Kostin, the hopes were very high for what he would become. Those hopes are dashed as far as his Blues career goes.

Kostin needed to play and perhaps he’ll get more of a look with the Oilers. For his sake, hopefully Edmonton brings better results for him, but the Blues have not given up a player that went on to become something special in a long time without getting something significant in return, i.e. People said the Blues were wrong to move on from Robby Fabbri, but his career highs are still in a Blues uniform, so he has not proven to excel elsewhere. Ultimately, Kostin is gone because Armstrong saw the writing on the wall and mercifully gave him a chance elsewhere. The Blues had simply run out of patience. Kostin only played two games in 2020-21, although some of that was attributed to the partial season. Kostin had simply fallen too far on the Blues depth chart. He also only played 2:28 worth of ice time in that game, so he wasn’t exactly forcing his way into the Oilers lineup and they were a team that needed defensive help at times. Kostin was playing more of a fourth line role in his playing style, often getting into fights or physical altercations. Or, perhaps he doesn’t even play with the Oilers much. The Blues traded the Russian forward to the Edmonton Oilers on October 9. Few will believe me, but I was working on a piece that was going to discuss Klim Kostin’s days with the St.

Blues acquire defenseman Dmitri Samorukov from Edmonton, who's expected to being year in Springfield.

He played 51 games for the Bakersfield Condors in the AHL last season with three goals and 15 assists, and was plus 16. Samorukov played one more shift in that game, and then was benched for the rest of the contest. The next day he was shipped out to the minors, and that Dec. Leivo’s spot on the waiver wire was surprising because he has an impressive preseason with the Blues, scoring two goals (both on Sept. Louis in a 4-2 loss by the Oilers on Dec. 18, 2021 – the second game of the season – when he scored two goals in a 7-4 win at Arizona. Samorukov and Kostin were teammates on Russia’s World Junior teams in 2018 and 2019. The emergence of younger talent such as Jake Neighbours, Alexey Toropchenko and even Nikita Alexandrov made it tougher for Kostin to earn a roster spot. The first-round draft pick in the 2017 draft (No. But now he’s a member of the Edmonton Oilers organization. 31 overall) was traded to the Edmonton Oilers for defenseman Dmitri Samorukov, the Blues announced Sunday. – It’s over for Klim Kostin and the Blues.

Where Klim Kostin Fits in the Oilers Organization (The Hockey Writers)

The Edmonton Oilers made a trade with the St. Louis Blues, acquiring power-forward Klim Kostin. Here's where he fits with the organization.

Since Kostin is on a one-way deal and has already cleared waivers, he can be called up and sent back down freely for the next month. He will first report to Bakersfield, but watch for his name to be called to join the Oilers at some point in the season. Though it is unfortunate the Oilers moved on from a strong defenceman in the organization, there was no room for Samorukov. Instead, they save some much-needed cap dollars and provide themselves with a young talented forward in Kostin who could do better with a fresh start. It is a low-risk trade that could pay off for the Oilers, so let’s look at his potential as an NHL player and what kind of a role he would play in the American Hockey League (AHL) if he were to spend time there this season. He was a bit more effective in the playoffs by putting up four goals and eight points in 18 games, but the lack of confidence showed this preseason. Since he has already cleared waivers, the Oilers are free to move him up and down between the NHL and AHL as they please for the next 30 days. The Oilers know something about that as a similar thing happened to Jesse Puljujarvi. He made the Blues out of training camp last season and recorded four goals and nine points in 40 games before finishing the season in the AHL. He was a reason why the Oilers’ roster is filled with players who graduated from that AHL team. The Edmonton Oilers and the St. The defensive depth on the left side for the Oilers was deep, seeing how Darnell Nurse, Brett Kulak, Philip Broberg, Ryan Murray, and Markus Niemelainen were all ahead of Samorukov.
