Manoah gets the start as Blue Jays welcome Mariners in wild-card ... (Hope Standard)

Blue Jays ace Alek Manoah will get the start for Game 1 of Toronto's wild-card series against the Seattle Mariners this afternoon.

A sellout crowd will be in full voice for the Blue Jays’ first home playoff game since the 2016 AL Championship Series. Both players worked out Thursday and ran the bases. The Blue Jays have more offensive weapons but Seattle likely has the pitching edge thanks to a deep bullpen. We’re really encouraged by the recovery.” He wants to be the guy. Myself, the staff and every player in the clubhouse has all the confidence in the world in us being the last team standing.” He was scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Friday afternoon. “Luis has got the ability to shut down any lineup on any given night with his stuff,” said Mariners manager Scott Servais. Seattle, a franchise that entered Major League Baseball with the expansion Blue Jays in 1977, hasn’t played a playoff game since losing the ALCS in 2001. “It’s the competitiveness behind that. Just go out there and have some fun with the boys.” The Mariners, who won 90 games, will go with Luis Castillo (8-6, 2.99) as their Game 1 starter.

Blue Jays: Notable names on and off the Wild Card roster (Jays Journal)

[Bradley Zimmer](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/z/zimmebr01.shtml) and [Mitch White](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/whitemi03.shtml). [Gabriel Moreno](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/morenga01.shtml) to the roster and they did just that. [Raimel Tapia](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/tapiara01.shtml) will continue to be Gurriel’s replacement in left field and he has done an admiral job of late. He has posted a slash line of .333/.418/.590 with 12 extra-base hits and 14 RBI while walking as much as he is striking out (13:16). Over his last seven appearances, he posted an 0-4 record with one blown save and had a 9.71 ERA. [Lourdes Gurriel Jr, ](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gurrilo01.shtml)who has [been out now](https://jaysjournal.com/2022/10/06/blue-jays-will-gurriel-jr-and-espinal-be-healthy-for-the-playoffs/) for a month with a hamstring injury he sustained running out a ball to first base. White was acquired at the trade deadline and was given the fifth spot in the rotation and unfortunately struggled. Espinal had an impressive start to the season when he took over as the Blue Jays second basemen and was producing at the plate, posting a slash line of .271/.320/.391 with 27 extra-base hits over his first 325 at-bats that led to him being selected as an All-Star Game replacement. Zimmer has shown that he is good defensively and was used often to either give one of the regulars some late-inning rest or an upgrade defensively in close games the team was winning. Unfortunately for Espinal, he was not able to keep up his strong start and had been hitting just .232 with only three extra-base hits from August 18 until he went down with his injury. At 10:00 am EST both the Mariners and the Blue Jays had to submit and confirm their Wild Card 26-man rosters for the three-game set. Manager John Schneider has been keeping both [Danny Jansen](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/j/janseda01.shtml) and [Alejandro Kirk](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/k/kirkal01.shtml) in the line-up as the catcher and designated hitter so the team needs the insurance of having another catcher on the bench.

Alek Manoah's highly anticipated post-season debut did not go as expected after allowing four runs over 5.2 innings Friday against the Seattle Mariners.

Manoah posted an ERA of 0.88 in the month — a single-month club record — in 41 innings of work. Then, with Suarez on base, Cal Raleigh took Manoah deep to right field, giving Seattle a 3-0 lead to end the first inning. After Rodriguez advanced to second base on the ensuing at-bat, Eugenio Suarez hit a double to bring the runner home: 1-0.

The wild-card format of the past was a one-game, win-or-go-home affair that made for spectacular theatre but a hard-to-swallow way to resolve a season. flew out to centre, and the fifth, when Whit Merrifield and Springer singled ahead of a Bichette groundout, but Castillo didn’t relent over 7.1 shutout innings. Cal Raleigh then battled the count full and pounded a sinker over the wall in right to make it 3-0. Left-handed hitters did most of the damage against Manoah during the season, batting .237/.313/.367 against him with 11 homers compared to .159/.211/.249 and five homers for righties. Manoah, the right choice for Game 1, perhaps came out a bit too hot and put himself in an early jam by hitting Julio Rodriguez on the hand with his fourth pitch of the game, an 0-2 four-seamer. That it would come to this, their fate dependent on a Game 2 rebound Saturday, behind starter Kevin Gausman, shouldn’t be surprising for a team that spent the 2022 season doing things the hard way.

Early Wild Card Stumble Pushes Blue Jays to Brink (Sports Illustrated)

The Mariners scored three runs in the first inning in Friday's Wild Card game, pushing the Blue Jays to the brink of postseason elimination.

With a pair of infield singles in the fifth, Bo Bichette came to the dish with the crowd willing him to cut into the lead. Gausman left his final start of the regular season with a cut on his throwing hand. The lingo was different— the next level, the goal, the playoffs—but the desire was the same. The Mariners' ace peppered the strike zone, inducing soft grounders off Toronto bats and keeping the Jays far from the scoreboard. "I'm excited for tomorrow, and you try to win two in a row to win a series," manager John Schneider said. And then, the Mariners snatched it all away.

Blue Jays face elimination after disastrous loss to Mariners in ... (The Globe and Mail)

Suddenly, the Blue Jays are on the brink of elimination. Toronto starter Alek Manoah had a surprisingly disastrous first inning in his playoff debut.

His most damaging pitch may have been the last of his outing – an inside fastball hurling at 98 mph that drilled Springer in the left hand and had the Jays slugger wincing in pain (later X-rays proved negative for a fracture). Manoah seemed to settle in after the first inning. The previous day, Manoah had said, “I know how to play baseball more than I know how to do anything in this world. In the blink of an eye, Seattle had a 3-0 lead, and Canada’s Thanksgiving weekend was off to a sombre start. The jovial well-liked pitcher, who led the Jays with 16 wins, didn’t look as cool and composed as expected. It might have been his last outing of the season. The 6-foot-6, 285-pound right-hander had not allowed a run in his last 15 innings of the regular season, but he couldn’t get his fastball right at first. Playing in just his first full season in the major leagues, after earning his first all-star nod, the 24-year-old was ready to debut in October’s bright lights. The Jays struggled to get much off 29-year-old Mariners right-hander Luis Castillo. Manoah hit Seattle’s leadoff hitter, Julio Rodriguez, for the second time. Manoah stumbles as Blue Jays drop Game 1 (MLB.com)

TORONTO -- The Blue Jays suddenly find themselves on the ropes in the most unexpected of ways after an early stumble from Alek Manoah and a dormant offense ...

Rogers Centre was rocking in the first inning, with chants as Manoah stepped atop the mound and a roar for his first strike. Like so many Blue Jays experiencing a home game in the postseason for the first time, though, Friday was a lesson. “It was good to get the feet wet. Manoah was lifted after 5 2/3 innings on 79 pitches, taking a slow walk to the dugout before slamming his hat to the ground. And if a potential Game 3 rolls around, Manoah will surely be in the ear of pitching coach Pete Walker and Schneider, telling them that he’s ready on very short rest. [Keegan Matheson](mailto:[email protected]) covers the Blue Jays for MLB.com. “He settled in great after the first inning. After hitting Julio Rodríguez with a pitch in a two-strike count to open the game, Manoah gave up a double to Eugenio Suárez and then a two-run shot to Cal Raleigh, the author of another massive Mariners moment after his walk-off home run clinched Seattle’s first postseason berth since 2001. He looked like the 24-year-old who’s kicked the door down, posting a 2.24 ERA over 196 2/3 innings this season and emerging as the Blue Jays’ ace. Castillo was operating well above his season averages, regularly touching 100 mph with one of the most impressive performances of his career. From Castillo, the Mariners went to Andres Muñoz, whose fastball reached as high as 102.9 mph. There were times where it looked nearly impossible to barrel up a pitch from Castillo.

The Toronto Blue Jays will attempt to keep their season alive after getting downed by the Seattle Mariners 4-0 in their wild-card series opener.

The Mariners have allowed the first run and lost four of his last five starts, a troublesome trend ahead of Game 2. Seattle has allowed five or more runs in four of Ray’s last five starts and the Blue Jays have a lineup very capable of getting to the 31-year-old. His recent results have been encouraging, though, posting a 2.35 ERA over his last three starts. Toronto ranked seventh in the majors with 200 homers, with four players hitting 25-plus bombs and Bo Bichette adding another 24. The ex-Blue Jay has struggled recently, though, putting up a 5.27 ERA over his last five starts while allowing opposing hitters to swat .292 off him during this stretch. The pregame narrative: Toronto’s bats were kept at bay by Luis Castillo in Game 1.

Blue Jays Alek Manoah proved one thing in Toronto's 4-0 loss to the Seattle Mariners in Game 1 of the Wild Card on Friday: he never stops battling.

If Manoah gets one more start this postseason, it will mean the Blue Jays came back to knock off the Mariners. He threw 16 pitches at least 94.5 mph in the game; 13 of them came in the first inning. If the Blue Jays take anything away from Manoah’s start, it’s that he isn’t fazed by a little adversity. He retired nine in a row before hitting Rodriguez a second time as the Mariners tacked on another run on a fielder’s choice in the fifth; those two pitches to Rodriguez, both coming with the bases empty and two strikes, as well as the fastball to Raleigh, are the ones Manoah will look back on as pitches that got away from him. Manoah had every excuse to get frustrated after his first inning, to just chalk it up to a bad day. He averaged 93.3 mph on his sinker this season but topped 95 mph five times in the first inning. [Julio Rodriguez](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/rodriju01.shtml) before a fastball came too far inside and struck the Mariners’ 21-year-old burgeoning superstar on the padding of his batting glove. Ace right-hander was too pumped, too wired in his post-season debut, and it was 3-0 for the Mariners in a flash.

Then was able to make some pitches to France and left a pitch over the plate — Suarez was able to put a good swing on it. He couldn’t command the strike zone, his delivery was out of sync, and he was denied any wiggle room for errors. The leadoff man was on the gnarly way but there was not much to fret as Manoah induced a groundball out from Ty France. “(Manoah) settled in great after the first inning,” interim manager John Schneider said of his money starter. A seventh-pitch sinker to Cal Raleigh got cranked for a two-run shot 362 feet to right and it was 3-0 in a flash. Manoah spoke like a guy who believes there is yet time for playoff redemption, which would require Toronto to get back-to-back wins. Yet he was too stoked, too pumped, too wired in his post-season debut, inside the emotional swirl of a ballpark that hadn’t seen playoff ball since 2016. “I think he did a really good job … Facing his first batter, Julio Rodriguez, Manoah went strike one but then clipped him on the wrist with a fastball. But what a moment for the magic to dissolve. But he came up both over-amped and under a bad moon rising. Maybe that’s too harsh because the Jays’ 4-0 loss to Seattle didn’t come entirely down to Manoah.
