The Athletics (60-102) and Angels (73-89) both were previously eliminated from playoff contention. "To have my family with me on my final day and be given the opportunity to walk away on my terms, it's not something I take lightly. Athletics starter Ken Waldichuk allowed just three hits over seven shutout innings to earn his second win over the season. He smashed the first pitch he saw from Angels relief pitcher Zack Weiss to right field for his final career homer. Neither team scored in the first inning. Vogt put an exclamation point on his 10-year tenure Wednesday in Oakland, Calif.

MLBits: Stephen Vogt's Storybook Sendoff, Why Joe Maddon Was ... (bleachernation.com)

Steven Vogt is calling it a career, but not before he received a special sendoff in Oakland on Wednesday.

- The Los Angeles Dodgers scored a bunch this season. But Maddon and his mohawk never made it to the clubhouse as Angels GM Perry Minasian arrived at Maddon’s front door to deliver the news. Over the previous few days Minasian had told Maddon he was considering firing some coaches. Here’s Payton, Clark, and Bennett running up to their dad before the game and embracing him as he took in the scenery of the coliseum for the final time. “And so, I think for me; obviously, my goal is to one day manage, and I always set my sights very high, and I’m not afraid to hear no. The 38-year-old plans on getting into coaching and one day becoming an MLB manager:

Stephen Vogt writes perfect script for final major league game (White Cleat Beat)

Stephen Vogt wrote a storybook ending to his career. On the way, he gave Oakland A's fans one last reason to say "I believe in Stephen Vogt."

He has stated a desire to remain in the game in some capacity and has been regarded as a possible manager in the future. A player like that is the perfect mentor and someone who would seemingly be a natural as a coach. That alone would have been a nice moment, something that he would have remembered for the rest of his life. His joy, and the joy of his teammates, were wonderful to see. To make it even more amazing, that first career homer sailed into the same section of seats. He took advantage of the opportunity.

The ball sailed for the right-field seats, just as Stephen Vogt's long-awaited first career hit had done more than nine years before.

“I Believe in Stephen Vogt!” chants greeted Vogt for his first plate appearance in the second from the crowd of 11,232. He waved to the crowd in every direction. Chad Pinder followed with a double and was lifted for a pinch-runner so he could walk off to a warm ovation in his likely final game with A's before testing free agency. "But normally, all of us there would like to be in the playoffs, and this is supposed to be the starting line. He finished 1 for 4 with a strikeout at the plate. He became the first player to qualify as a batter and a pitcher since rules for qualification were adopted in 1950. 82 of his career landed in nearly the same right-field spot as his first career hit, in his 33rd at-bat on June 28, 2013, off Cardinals reliever Joe Kelly. How fitting Vogt cleared the fences again in his final plate appearance at age 37 and with so many family and friends right there for a front-row seat. Trout reached 40 homers for the third time and first since hitting a career-best 45 in his 2019 AL MVP season. I'm so thankful that my kids are going to remember daddy playing," he said, in tears. Ohtani struck out six and didn't allow a baserunner until Vogt's six-pitch walk with one out in the fifth. Vogt's seventh home run of the season and No.

"Each athlete is recognized as a player who is paving the way for the next generation on and off the court," Nike said in a statement. Oregon's only loss, to date, of the campaign was the 49-3 thumping at the hands of the Georgia Bulldogs in the regular-season opener back on Sept. 13 TCU both to be unbeaten going into their contest on Saturday in Fort Worth, Texas, but that is the case in what is the first top-15 showdown in the conference this year. The 12th-ranked Oregon Ducks improved to 5-1 on the season via Saturday's 49-22 win over the Arizona Wildcats and presented fans with a visual gift on the Monday of their bye week. Wings on the helmets and also player gloves, wristbands, and cleats will also sport the shade of pink. Rhule and company orchestrated a trade with the Cleveland Browns in July to acquire Baker Mayfield, and that decision has thus far worked out poorly and played a role in the Panthers dismissing Rhule before Halloween. With the loss, the Raiders dropped to 1-4 and last in the AFC West. In a rematch of the Eastern Conference finals, the Rangers will aim for their fourth straight regular-season victory over the visiting Lightning in Tuesday night's season opener in New York. The team gets a bye week in Week 6 before returning to action in Week 7 against the Houston Texans. The Rangers won the first two games of that series, but the Lightning answered with four straight wins to make a third consecutive Stanley Cup Final appearance before their quest for back-to-back-to-back titles ended in a loss to Colorado. Puma adds that the Mets want to eventually hire a president of baseball operations who will sit above Eppler and a new team president to replace the departing Sandy Alderson. The New York Mets hired former Los Angeles Angels general manager Billy Eppler to be their new GM last November, and Eppler ultimately played a role in the selection of veteran option Buck Showalter as the team's manager.
