For Robertson, he will be 27 years old and still have RFA status at the end of this new deal. Playing with Joe Pavelski and Roope Hintz, Robertson was a part of one of the most effective lines in hockey. It allows the Stars some cap flexibility the next four seasons, which the team needs with the huge contracts they are on the books for with Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn. The stalemate is over, as Jason Robertson signed a four-year, $31 million contract with the Stars. He's played just two full seasons in the league, but he has 125 points in 128 games, most recently coming off a 79-point season last year. The Dallas Stars have signed forward Jason Robertson to a four-year contract extension just days before the regular season is set to kick off.

To have Robertson under contract through his age-26 season for less than $8 million per year is tremendous value. On the open market, this is a player who could have commanded at least $1.5- to 2 million more than he ultimately took. All the kid does is put pucks in the net.

Breaking down Jason Robertson's extension, Stars' salary cap future (The Dallas Morning News)

The Stars and their fanbase breathed a sigh of relief late Wednesday night when the organization announced its signing of Jason Robertson to a four-year...

One of the reasons Robertson was unable to sign a long-term deal was that Benn and Seguin’s contract ate too much of the cap. Seguin’s contract was worth 12.39% of the cap when it was signed in 2018. Benn’s contract was worth 13.01% of the cap when it was signed in 2016. The Stars are setting up Robertson to potentially sign a version of Benn and Seguin’s contracts when he’s 27 in four years. Until then, the Stars and Robertson can enjoy their relationship. Instead of waiting until then, the two sides agreed to a deal that was below his qualifying offer, something the Stars would definitely welcome in 2026 given Robertson’s $9.3 million qualifying offer he’s due. One, Barzal signed the extension before his current contract expired, avoiding a possible training camp contract dispute that Robertson and the Stars just endured. Barzal was entering the final year of his bridge contract and signed an eight-year extension worth $9.15 million annually that will keep him on the Island through the 2030-31 season. There are signs that the cap stars will align for them. Robertson will be paid $3 million in signing bonuses this season, in addition to a base salary of $1.5 million. To resolve their differences, Robertson and agent Pat Brisson acquiesced on their request for a long-term contract. All that was left to fret about was Robertson’s travel schedule and whether he’ll be able to play in the team’s final preseason game Saturday night in Minnesota.
