The team’s sluggish pace has severely limited his ability to put together the offensive output that had made him a prim off-season target for the Broncos’ front office. Denver is struggling with their own running back issues, as Javonte Williams will be unavailable. Failure to complete drives and careless mistakes see the Colts ranked dead last in total points per game. Still, Ryan was 27-of-37 last week, passing for 356 yards and two touchdowns in his team’s come-from-behind victory over the Tennessee Titans. Four games in, Matt Ryan already has nine fumbles on the season, and his six interceptions see the Colts carry a -6 turnover margin. While Ryan’s stat line suggests that he is adjusting to the new offense, uncharacteristic turnovers have made it difficult for his team to stay competitive in games.

Kongbo was released after the 2019 Grey Cup to pursue NFL opportunities and signed with the San Francisco 49ers. The six-foot-five, 255-pound defender appeared in 12 regular season games as a rookie, recording 12 tackles and one sack. He made three tackles and one sack in the West Final against the Saskatchewan Roughriders and helped Winnipeg win a second consecutive Grey Cup title against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
After 10 seasons, the Seahawks traded Wilson to Denver for a haul, which included Drew Lock, Noah Fant, Shelby Harris, and picks.
The deal also gives Wilson $85 million of new money over its first two years in 2024 and 2025. The contract also had $165 million guaranteed, third in the league behind Deshaun Watson and Kyler Murray. Here's a look at the terms of Wilson's deal with Denver. After trading for Wilson, Denver signed him to a hefty five-year extension, giving him a big vote of confidence before even taking the field in a Broncos uniform. Lock, of course, lost the starting job to Geno Smith, who has been excellent starting for the Seahawks so far this year. While Wilson has struggled at times early in the season, the Broncos are hoping more time with Nathaniel Hackett in their offense will make him more comfortable.

With [Randy Gregory](https://www.nfl.com/players/randy-gregory/)on injured reserve, the Broncos knew coming into this game they would be without a major source of pass-rush juice. The unit struggled early, with [Ryan Kelly](https://www.nfl.com/players/ryan-kelly/)and Pryor beaten for sacks and Raimann flagged twice for holding (although both calls felt debatable) and once for a false start. The Broncos moved top corner [Patrick Surtain II](https://www.nfl.com/players/patrick-surtain-ii/)away from [Michael Pittman](https://www.nfl.com/players/michael-pittman-2/)and over to Pierce late, a pretty big sign of respect for the second-rounder. Some of the concern seemed to wane after some confident throws and quality scrambles Sunday [against the Raiders](https://www.nfl.com/games/broncos-at-raiders-2022-reg-4), even in a loss. [Alec Pierce](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/4360078/alec-pierce) had a coming-out performance with eight receptions for 81 yards, including three impressive catches on the Colts' tying drive in the fourth quarter. He took sacks, overthrew receivers and was evaluated for a concussion early in the fourth quarter before returning to the game. A concern about Pierce's game was his ability to make tough catches in traffic, but Pierce made a number of contested and diving catches throughout the game, helping to change the complexion of the Colts' young wide-receiving corps. [Matt Ryan](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/11237/matt-ryan) was sacked six times, giving him 21 sacks taken for the season. The Colts still gave up constant penetration and failed to consistently open holes in the running game. Tagovailoa had hit his head in the Dolphins’ game that Sunday and came up staggering and shaking his head, but his injury was announced as a back injury. It was the crescendo of a symphony of nightmares for the Broncos. The Broncos' struggles in the red area are all the more alarming considering what the Broncos gave up for Wilson both in the trade with Seattle and the subsequent $245 million contract extension. It was a perfect storm for the Broncos, and an ugly game ended in the only way that made sense. "We didn't want to end in a tie, we wanted to try to win the game. Wilson finished 1 of 6 passing for 5 yards in the red zone with an interception and a sack. Wilson failed to see him wide open in the flat after a rub route. "We hadn't moved the ball very well the whole night, and I thought we had a spectacular drive to get all the way down there. They got to the red zone in relatively short order, with a first-and-10 from the 14. "We wanted to win the game," he said. Stephon Gilmore's interception in the end zone kept the Colts alive in the fourth quarter, and his pass breakup in the end zone won the Colts the game. Adding insult to injury, the Broncos held the Colts without a touchdown in their two red-zone trips, lowering their NFL-best opposing TD percentage to 27.3. Having a mobile quarterback is generally thought to be a boon inside the red zone.

Eventually, one must wonder how many serious injuries to star players the Broncos can sustain and still survive. The Broncos' entire offensive line is reeling right now, and a shake-up isn't out of the question. Bolles' injury occurred late in the fourth quarter as he blocked on a Mike Boone rush. Bolles' legs got rolled into, and he was pretzeled to the dirt.

Bolles was rolled up on late in the fourth quarter and was rolling around in pain. The replay didn’t look good and Bolles looked pissed off and emotional as he was getting carted off the field. Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson didn't mince words when discussing his struggles in Thursday night's loss, "We should have won that game. It's on me."

"Got to finish, execute," Hamler said of the offensive struggles. "That's on us. He added: "Lot of season left, lot of opportunity. The offense fought its ass off." The Broncos' red zone woes continued as they finished without a touchdown and have scored just two touchdowns in their three home games combined. He was just 9-of-17 passing for 69 yards in the first half. ... Guy made a good play," Wilson said. ... I've got to find a way to make a play, whatever it takes." It's on the entire team, and for us to learn from this and grow, grow from all five games that we've had. "We win as one, we lose as one," outside linebacker Bradley Chubb said. Then, in overtime, with the Broncos facing an opportunity to salvage a win, Wilson was again unable to connect. "At the end of the day, I've got to be better. "[I] have to throw that out of bounds if it's not there.

Yet again, it was Gilmore who was locked in as he made a beautiful pass breakup, stretching out his right arm to bat away Wilson's throw and sending the Colts home with the win. “I’m looking forward to turning it around,“ Wilson said. I think we had a couple of drops again, a couple of penalties. “As a collective, we go win games and we go lose games. Broncos rookie head coach Nathaniel Hackett made sure the game was in the hands of Wilson. “The one thing I know is I’ve gone through tough times before, gone through obstacles, gone through challenges. It veered left, and the Broncos trudged away 17-16 losers in Wilson’s harsh homecoming. Melvin Gordon offered words of comfort, the same way Wilson did for him Sunday when his fumble was returned for a 68-yard touchdown in a loss at Las Vegas. “We just couldn’t finish.” We moved the ball into the red zone and we didn’t capitalize on some of them. It allowed the Colts to drive down and tie it on Chase McLaughlin’s 31-yard field goal with 5 seconds remaining. “I let the team down tonight,” said Wilson, who threw two interceptions, including one that set up Indy’s game-tying field goal with 5 seconds left in regulation. This has become a recurring theme for the Broncos (2-3), who are averaging just 15 points a game.

Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson placed blame for Denver's 12-9 overtime loss Thursday night the only place he could: on his own shoulders.
I'm looking forward to the adversity of it all, the negativity of it all, and everything else because [I] just use that for fuel and opportunity. I'm looking forward to the challenge of it all. "I'm looking forward to turning it around," Wilson said. [With] how great the defense is doing, if we can to turn it around on offense -- how quickly we can turn it around on offense. We have to be able to get that first down -- whatever it is. We just have to keep battling and keep believing." I believe in what I can do. I have to be able to hit it [throws]. At the end of the day, I have to be better. On Thursday, he trusted Wilson to make plays, and the QB came up short. I believe in what we can do. Russell Wilson was supposed to be solve Denver's big problem at the NFL's most important position. Instead, he has created bigger issues.
They know Wilson won't give them the QB play that's needed to wrestle division powerhouse status from Mahomes and the Chiefs. They get Herbert's Chargers for the first time in Week 6 on the road. They were looking for a quarterback to put their passing game on equal footing in the AFC West with the Chiefs (Patrick Mahomes) and Chargers (Justin Herbert). And the Broncos are stuck with Wilson for a while. Denver didn't trade for Wilson to be a stopgap, veteran bridge like Indianapolis did for the 37-year-old Ryan and Washington did for Wentz, with each team giving up much less in return. The Broncos have gone from careful caretaker Teddy Bridgewater to erratic playmaker Wilson, a shocking downgrade in efficiency. The house finally caved in on him against the Colts. Ryan could have wilted on Thursday night, but he stood up strong late to make the plays needed to win the game. The Seahawks' defense, far removed from the Legion of Boom that lifted Wilson up earlier in his career, was awful last season. In hiring offensive-minded coach Nathaniel Hackett from the Packers, they were looking for an Aaron Rodgers-like MVP return. After his losing performance Thursday night, Wilson has a 59.4 completion percentage with three INTs to four TDs. Overcoming shaky pass protection from a shuffled offensive line and some bad decisions with the ball himself, Ryan rebounded by directing the game-tying and game-winning field-goal drives.

It was a play Wilson liked, Hackett said, and with the game on the line, he wanted to put the ball in the hands of Wilson. Eventually, Wilson did climb out of that chair in front of his locker Thursday night, and made the short walk to the interview podium. Colts quarterback Matt Ryan was sacked six times, fumbled twice (though the Colts recovered both), and threw two interceptions, to bring his season total to seven in five games (it is worth noting that Carson Wentz threw seven interceptions in all of 2021.) At one point, a Broncos tight end, Andrew Beck, dropped a would-be touchdown pass and in doing so, somehow managed to kick the ball out of the end zone. They’re all in on this ride with Wilson—and we’ll all watch them do it again in prime time in Week 6, on Monday Night Football against the Chargers. The game featured 12 punts (seven by the Colts, five by the Broncos) and seven field goals (and the Broncos also had a field goal attempt blocked). Thursday Night Football has a long history of producing stinkers of the mid-aughts Titans-Jaguars variety, and yet this one felt like it was the worst Thursday Night Football game of all time. Those final moments Thursday night, from Hamler’s reaction to it—not only did he vent to a reporter, but also he was seen slamming his helmet to the grass—and Wilson’s stunned look on the field after the game and his long, pensive pose in the locker room after, are what will linger from this loss as a potentially landmark moment in Wilson’s Denver tenure. Wilson lined up in shotgun, with a spread formation, and laser focused on receiver Courtland Sutton, who was crossing from left to right near the back of the end zone. Hackett explained after the game that the call was a sign of trust in his quarterback. There were boos at Empower Field at Mile High by the third quarter—and not for the first time this season, though it’s only Week 5—and fans streamed to the exits at the end of the regulation, despite the fact that the Broncos had never actually trailed in the game. They’ve been at their worst when the field is the tightest, when he’s been asked to operate on script in the red zone. Wilson threw two brutal interceptions in Thursday’s 12-9 overtime loss to the Colts, and didn’t see an open receiver in the end zone on his final fourth-down pass attempt that ended the game.
