Hughes birdied the second playoff hole to beat Sepp Straka at the Sanderson Farms Championship, which has been good to Canadians over the years.

“It validates a lot of work I’ve been putting in,” said Hughes. The Sanderson Farms and its previous iterations has been good to Canadians. Hughes shot a tidy 9-under 63 on Friday to get into the mix and earned a spot in the final group Sunday after a third-round 68. I wanted to be on that team,” said Hughes. “I’ve been a fairly consistent performer over the last five years, but my goal is to win more,” said Hughes. “It hurt, but that’s the way it goes in this game sometimes.” “I’ve visualized that many times, and to see it happen, to experience it for real, was unbelievable,” said Hughes. He needed just 21 putts in regulation Sunday and was first for the week in strokes gained: tee to green. The 31-year-old said he used that as motivation. Hughes finished 57th in the FedExCup standings last season, which wrapped up in September. “This is the kind of stuff I feel like I should be doing, and I want to be doing. It was a moment Hughes had dreamed about for a long time.

Mackenzie Hughes beats Sepp Straka on second playoff hole to win ... (usatoday.com)

Mackenzie Hughes came into the week motivated to make the Presidents Cup team for 2024 in native Canada. He's off to a good start.

It’s always the goal at the beginning of the week is on Sunday afternoon to have a chance, and I gave myself a chance. Hughes hit a clutch par putt on the 16th hole to remain at 17 under as the final round winded down. Straka’s approach leaked a bit long and left of the front left hole location, settling on the fringe. Moments later, Straka had a birdie putt on the 18th come up short. On the first playoff hole, Straka found the green while Hughes’ ball came up in a bunker short of the green. His putt again barely missed the cup, leaving the door open for Hughes to clinch the victory. Straka’s round included birdies on four of his final five holes on the front nine. “Winning gives you a lot of confidence,” Hughes said. I had to do that a little bit today on the back nine. It’s kind of my MO a little bit is to scramble and save some pars. He wanted to make sure he did whatever he could to make the team when the competition returns to Montreal in 2024. Hughes beat Sepp Straka on the second playoff hole Sunday at The Country Club of Jackson in Jackson, Mississippi, to win the 2022 Sanderson Farms Championship.

Mackenzie Hughes notched his second PGA Tour victory in a playoff Sunday at the Sanderson Farms Championship.

It’s always the goal at the beginning of the week is on Sunday afternoon to have a chance, and I gave myself a chance. “Winning gives you a lot of confidence,” Highs said after the playoff. “But I think that’s the most important thing to do tomorrow for me is stay within myself, focus on my own game, and let the chips fall where they fall.” His first also came in a playoff, at the 2017 RSM Classic. “It’s kind of my MO a little bit is to scramble and save some pars. “I had some moments today where I was tested and was able to pull through,” Hughes said.
