We talked to Macfarlane in a bit more depth about Bros, his personal style, and what he'd be doing if he wasn't an actor.
Whenever I buy a pair of sneakers, people say to me that they look like trail running shoes. And that was a really special thing because there is inevitably the point in every woodworking project where you don't want to sand it as much as you should. I would love to go back to that sort of action-adventure genre. You really have to make sure that you're sanding it all the way. But he's definitely opened me up and to be a little more aware of it. “It wasn’t that long ago that a lot of the stuff we get up to in the movie was against the law in many states.” That was a fun journey to go on as an actor. I just think he is amazing, and Billy was like, "Garth Brooks?!" So that part came before I got the role. That audition was right out of a movie. I don't know if everybody gets that kind of complicated co-lead journey. My agent sent me a script, I read it, and I immediately connected with it.
"I didn't know if that was ever going to come along for me in my career," said the Hallmark hunk who leads Billy Eichner's gay rom-com.
“So the fact that they did make it for LGBTQ people was my foot in the door.” “I didn’t know if that was ever going to come along for me in my career. “I’ve always felt very comfortable with who I am and I’m very proud of my contribution to the queer community. ‘Oh, I’ll be an actor that works and I’ll have ups and downs.’ But a feature studio film, I didn’t know if that was ever going to come around for me,” he said. Like Aaron, Macfarlane loves hockey, Garth Brooks, and is “probably guilty of spending a little bit too much time in the gym.” In the scheme of out gay celebrities, Macfarlane was a bit of a pioneer. Though it can sometimes feel like LGBTQ+ acceptance is whizzing along faster than anyone can keep up, the reality is that there are many countries where it’s still illegal to be gay, and many counties where it may feel that way. That’s the thing that I think I dreamed of when I was a kid at Julliard. (Macfarlane’s love of country music led to the movie’s sweet conclusion, in which Eichner’s character Bobby serenades Aaron with an original love song in the style of Garth Brooks.) And it felt like I had to add my voice to the group of people that said, ‘I’m queer and I’m publicly out.'” I did come out before a lot of my colleagues came out,” he said. “I came out officially when I was on ‘Brothers & Sisters’ in the Globe and Mail, which is my Canadian newspaper.

It’s bizarre to now be in something that feels more of the time. My mom had a lot of questions about poppers, but she also said, “I feel like I understand a little bit more about where you come from.” She cried at the right places, and she laughed at things that were unexpected. I’ve learned how to fall in love with a lot of different types of people. But the question of masculinity is not totally singular to the queer experience. The fact that it’s in a multiplex with 3,000 seats is important. Maybe the joyful answer to this is that we don’t spend the movie tearing each other apart, which we’ve done a lot of. Something that happens at the beginning of the movie, too, is that he drops his voice a lot. There’s a lot of very interesting essays about what a gay voice is and what gay movements are. Where we exist in the gay lineage is that it’s going to be in major movie theaters. On some level, Aaron, who probably doesn’t have a lot of close friends he talks about things on a deeper level with, probably takes a tremendous amount from that sort of private time that he has with Bobby Lieber on the Bobby Lieber podcast. When I moved to New York City at 19 years old to go to Juilliard, they taught us to get rid of all our ideas about what it means to be a certain kind of person, because that is boring. In the center of all that flamboyance, Macfarlane has to hold the audience’s attention as the living embodiment of Grindr’s trademark faceless torso.

“I must admit,” he goes on to add, “watching the movie is a reminder of the work that I was able to do early in my life in order to be comfortable with myself, because I am actually very, very comfortable in my skin. “There’s a speech that Joe Mantello’s character gives about a fundraiser that happens—and this is as all the characters have disappeared—and he said they had a dance…” Here is where Macfarlane chokes up. “I always laugh at that scene, because the quality of that had a Homicide: Life on the Streets vibe,” says Macfarlane. Even within the community, it’s hard to process how big of a deal this is. “I kind of lived a little bit of fear that it would,” he adds. “I have always valued and, for whatever reason, been taught that yourself is the most interesting thing you have to offer,” he says. It means having to take whatever fragment of yourself that you might see glimmering off the shoulder of a Julia Roberts- or Hugh Grant-type character on screen, then being at peace with that tiny bit of shine. What is remarkable about Bros—and remarkable still feels silly to say—is that there is gay sex in it.
