Edmonton Oilers blanked 4-0 by Calgary Flames in pre-season game (Globalnews.ca)

The Edmonton Oilers were shut out for the second-straight pre-season game, falling 4-0 to the Flames in Calgary on Wednesday night.

and the game at 7 p.m. You can listen to the game live on “Obviously you want to win the preseason, but at the same time you want to get back into game shape and face a lot of tough situations. For the Oilers, Pickard stopped 16 of 17 shots while Skinner turned aside 14 of 16. The first ten minutes was tough, it was a lot of zone time, but I thought after that we settled in pretty good. Calgary forward Jonathan Huberdeau scored an empty-netter to round out the scoring.

WWYDW: Predicting The Edmonton Oilers' Opening Night Roster (Oilers Nation)

Two weeks from today, the Edmonton Oilers will kick off the 2022-23 season by hosting the Vancouver Canucks. Only three players have been cut from ...

The obvious issue with this situation is that the Oilers would only have one extra skater on their active roster, giving the team virtually zero room to navigate short-term injuries. He’s apparently looking for a change of scenery because him and the Oilers can’t seem to agree on what his role on the team should be. - Mattias Janmark was signed early in the off-season to provide the Oilers some versatile forward depth, as he can chip in offensively, forecheck effectively, and kill penalties. Both players are fair bets to crack the roster on their own merit, but the performance bonus thing ultimately makes it a lock. - Tyson Barrie is a quality blueliner but he has an expensive cap hit at $4.5 million and he’s been passed on the depth chart by Evan Bouchard. There are seven forward, five defenders, and two goaltenders who appear to be locks to crack the Oilers’ roster out of training camp.

NHL Notebook: Edmonton Oilers' Warren Foegele wants penalty kill ... (Oilers Nation)

Warren Foegele wants to make the Edmonton Oilers. No surprise as virtually every player entering a teams training camp has that same goal in mind.

So the dates that you need to block off for this trip are January 12th to 15th. Scoring five goals and 22 points, the 2016 7th round pick was looking like a guy who could contend for the seventh spot on the Oilers backend. An imposing figure at 6’6, 216 lbs., he drew in for 65 games last year with the Bakersfield Condors in his first season of pro hockey. He's in good spirits, but not the start to season he wanted. Foegele’s looking to reinvent himself in Edmonton and that’s a great sign. For Foegele, however, he’s a player whose name has swirled in the rumour mill all summer.

GAME RECAP: Flames 4, Oilers 0 (NHL.com)

The Oilers were unable to solve the Flames goaltending as they fell 4-0 to their Alberta rivals at the Saddledome on Wednesday night.

He showed a lot ofleadership, second of two games in a row on the road. "It's exactly what I want in the preseason, coming in and playing against the big guys. The goal came with just 3:24 remaining in the second frame, doubling the Flames advantage and giving them a lead they would not relinquish. "There were some good signs in our team game, the penalty kill was really good. Veteran defenceman Michael Stone, who is in Calgary's Main Camp on a PTO, had the type of showing that could earn him a full-time roster spot on Wednesday night. You never know what happens in a season, but to have that type of depth I think it's very good and he should feel very good about his game tonight." "I think that's a really good sign," Woodcroft said about the play of his goaltender. After Ryan McLeod was sent to the box for tripping, the Flames were able to find some space on the powerplay. The Flames sniper fired a shot which was turned aside by a sprawling Calvin Pickard. On the other bench, the Flames started a veteran-aden lineup including starting netminder Jacob Markstrom and off-season pickups in Nazem Kadri and Mackenzie Weegar. Sutter joined the Flames new American Hockey League affiliate, the Calgary Wranglers after a seven year stint with the Ontario Reign. The goal came one second after McLeod stepped out of the box and the penalty expired.

GDB -3.0: Fanning The Flames (7pm MT, Streaming) (Oilers Nation)

Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Evander, Kane, Zach Hyman, Darnell Nurse, Cody Ceci, and Jack Campbell have yet to play a preseason game, and none will play ...

I’d also assume Petrov plays tonight and then, like the previous junior players in camp, he will be reassigned to North Bay. I ran into him at the rink today and he is in good spirits, but this is not the start to the season he wanted. So the dates that you need to block off for this trip are January 12th to 15th. The Flames have three of their top four lines going and four of their D. - The Oilers penalty killers will get a good test tonight as the Flames have their top PP dressed. But the former is the main reason he’s playing again. Jason Demers played better than Ryan Murray on Sunday, and with so many young D-men poised to start in Bakersfield, I wonder if Demers would be interested in a two-way deal that gives the Oilers some depth on the right side. The Flames went 3-for-7 in their first home preseason game v. Edmonton has really liked his progress, but this is two years in a row he missed preseason games due to injuries. Desharnais hurt his wrist/hand in the Captain skates, and he was skating on his own last week, but after more tests they opted to have surgery. The Oilers need to see if he can help their organization, even in the AHL. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Kailer Yamamoto, Jesse Puljujarvi, Brett Kulak, and Evan Bouchard are also expected to remain in Edmonton.

“When I met with him in the summer I explained that and said get ready because you’re going to get your chance in training camp,” said Woodcroft. “The hardest thing is finding a role when you’re in the bottom six and you aren’t on a special team. “It would be fair to say it was a bit of a roller coaster year, a bit of an adjustment,” said the 26-year-old winger, who is determined to take a step forward this year. Warren Foegele was one of the few Oilers veterans who made the trip. “You’re seeing who rises to the occasion and who keeps on getting better on a daily basis,” he said. The fact it was still a close game — the Flames needed two goals late in the third period to finally pull away — is a good sign.

Lowetide: Are Edmonton Oilers' recent trades supported by analytics? (The Athletic)

There are two trades in particular made by Oilers GM Ken Holland that are worthy of further examination.

Has the Ken Holland management group found a way to success via the trade market? There was enormous pressure to get better in a hurry, and the new management team dealt a lot of future for immediate help. What about the trade market?

Here's one crucial area that Edmonton Oilers are the envy of the NHL (Edmonton Journal)

Every off-season it seems we in Oil Country micro-analyze each new signing and prospect in the system, and every training camp we obsess about players on ...

Beneath all those guys are a trio of marginal but NHL-experienced depth players capable of filling in at the centre position, and a further quartet bubbling under of four promising youngsters who are natural pivots. Each has already spent time at wing as they have developed and that may serve them well in terms of getting a foot in the door at some future point. I’ve listed him 8th here because he has slightly less NHL experience, average ice time, and per-82 scoring rates than Shore or McKegg, though there’s a non-zero chance he’ll start the season with the big club. That faceoff ability is also a useful skill on the penalty kill, where opposing teams get their choice of circle to start the powerplay and often choose what turns out to be Ryan’s strong side. Of the three, Nugent-Hopkins contributes by far the most to the penalty kill unit, with excellent on-ice goals rates on both special teams. Of course the trio has played together and with deadly effect on Edmonton’s high-ranking powerplay. During the McDavid Era, the several Oilers’ coaches have adopted a consistent policy that the best player on a given line plays centre. The biggest question surrounding Edmonton pivots these days is whether they are playing centre or another forward position. And rarely enough anywhere else in the NHL over the intervening years. In spades. So what say we declare a vacation on (most of) that for a day, take a step back to survey the big picture, and enjoy the core strength of the organization. Article content

I ended up finding the game on the NHL app — it was streaming for free — but the struggle to get there took way longer than it should for a night when the points don’t matter. - Why did I have to watch this game on the Oilers’ website? - I’m really trying to keep an open mind about this Jake Virtanen experiment but this is the third straight game from him where I haven’t really noticed much of anything at all. As expected, he wasn’t able to fly by the Calgary defenders quite as easily but I did appreciate the flashes of speed that I saw through the neutral zone. - As much as I liked Dylan Holloway against the Jets on Sunday, he was much quieter against a more veteran-heavy Calgary lineup. That being said, the Flames were still able to get a goal from a depth line on Sutter’s goal. None of Benson, Virtanen nor Brad Malone were able to either take the body or strip the puck along the wall, and it allowed Nazem Kadri to find an all-alone MacKenzie Weegar on the other side of the ice. He played just xxxx and is likely to be among the next set or two of cuts. The trust of the matter is that I don’t think there’s any player that’s really able to do a whole lot in terms of separating off of last night’s game.

Will professional tryouts to Jake Virtanen or Jason Demers end in ... (Oilers Nation)

I'd expect Friday night, when the Oilers host the Calgary Flames, to be the start of that. Over the next few days we'll likely see some more cuts to the bottom ...

Demers, meanwhile, is another player who is likely to find himself on the outside looking in. He’s spent zero time on the penalty kill and in his 30:06 of even-strength time, he’s taken one shot on goal and laid only three hits. He registered just one shot on goal, and couldn’t help break up the Flames’ cycle on their third goal of the game. Last night, he drew in for his third game of the preseason playing 15:29 in all situations that included 3:11 on the powerplay. He wanted to prove his ability as a power forward as someone who once looked like he could become the premier player at the position. I’d expect Friday night, when the Oilers host the Calgary Flames, to be the start of that.

Jake Virtanen Running Out Of PTO Runway With Oilers (The Hockey Writers)

Jake Virtanen was given an opportunity to play well in preseason and earn a spot on the Oilers roster. He hasn't done so yet.

He’s not stood out as good and he’s not stood out as bad: he’s simply been invisible and that’s not going to lead him to a spot on this Oilers roster. If Virtanen was going to crack the roster, he was going to need to give Edmonton something useful beyond just a top-nine option on offense. Some fans looked at Virtanen coming in and the rumors of a pending trade and said this was a player the Oilers might be seriously looking at. Five games in eight days were far too many and Virtanen was more likely a roster filler than a real threat to crack the lineup. This contest against the Calgary Flames was an opportunity to show the Oilers organization that he had the goods to play a depth role for the team and to give GM Ken Holland a reason to seriously look at extending him a contract out of camp. [Jake Virtanen](https://thehockeywriters.com/docs/jake-virtanen/) drew in for his third game of the preseason, playing 15:29 on a team that didn’t have many NHL regulars on the game sheet for Edmonton.

Player reviews: Overmatched Oilers blanked again, this time by ... (Edmonton Journal)

Oilers 0, Flames 4 The Edmonton Oilers were the second best team on paper and proved it on the ice, falling 4-0 to Calgary Flames.

A couple of strong saves (theoretically) kept the Oilers in the game at 0-2 down early in the third, but was eventually beaten by MacKenzie Weegar’s uncontested shot from the slot in the dying minutes. Beaten soon thereafter when Michael Stone beat him short side on a screened blast from the side wall. Stuart Skinner came on at the midway point and quickly made a fine stop on a 2-on-1. Made a fine stop of a Michael Stone blast through a screen, and another off Tyler Toffoli after a cross-seam pass through the slot. He was credited with nearly half of Edmonton’s hits (6 of 13) on the night, but was vulnerable to quick puck movement. Largely played a quiet, efficient game, though he skated himself into trouble in the defensive slot late in the third. He’s a solid AHL grinder who was in tough against the NHL-heavy Calgary line-up. He did have one strong defensive sequence with some heavy board work along his own end wall. A team-high 3 shots on net, though his best chance from the high slot produced something of a muffin. He had a good chance early when he jumped on a loose puck and nearly beat Jacob Markstrom under the arm. Most of the bottom six forwards did play and largely held their own but with no offence to show for it. Article content

Calgary is looking to replicate their Wedensday performance against the Oilers, this time on the road at Rogers Place. "Pretty much the older guys have played at home, we're very cautious about that," Sutter said. The Oilers goaltending tandem of Calvin Pickard and Stuart Skinner held their own against an offensively loaded Flames roster, turning aside 30 of 33 shots. Edmonton is coming off a 4-0 defeat to their provincial rivals on Wednesday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome. "Obviously there's room for improvement when you didn't score a goal on the road. CAMP: Oilers entering the second stage of Training Camp (NHL.com)

They've put a lot of work in during practice and I think they're probably sick of practicing and are ready to get going, and that's a good thing too -- when you really have the desire to play in preseason. Some people want a little bit more, some might only need a few, so it's about talking through that and also balancing their wants with the need of the team as well. With five total pre-season games still left on the docket, the Oilers Coach pointed to the remaining exhibition schedule as the place where their biggest mark on coaching and management can be made. "There might be some people here or there that get announced over the next couple of days, but that's how we look at it," he said. "We had the first three days of practice, then the first three games, and then there was an off day. So every day counts and the competition is really heating up here."

Edmonton Oilers' roster takes shape, key positional battles remain (Edmonton Journal)

First, that eight preseason games is a lot. Three games in, Oil fans have yet to enjoy a single sighting of forwards Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Ryan Nugent ...

Lots of scenarios both up front and on the blue, and too early to do anything more than make educated guesses. The PuckPedia Model features a margin so thin that it would fit Murray at $750,000 but neither of the others. - Philip Broberg is in a similar situation as Holloway in that he must be on the season opening roster to vest his bonuses, even as it remains possible that he might be subsequently sent out. He seems a strong bet to land somewhere in the top seven; Demers is more a candidate for a two-way pact that would land him in Bakersfield as injury depth, if indeed he is offered a contract at all. Given a second chance by the Oilers to reestablish himself as an NHLer, the 26-year-old has played in all three preseason games to this point but has struggled to make his case. He’s looked OK in his two games filling in at centre between Janmark and Ryan, a limited player who understands his role. Among the more NHL-proven players, Ceci missed a few days at the beginning of camp and is now back practicing on the first pairing. On the back end, Vincent Desharnais was banged up in the Captain’s Skates and will be out a few weeks, tough luck for him. The seventh was winger Matvey Petrov, who was also the last of the four junior-age players to get a preseason game when he dressed in Calgary on Wednesday. Of them, Fanti and Tullio have NHL-class two-way contracts. That’s north of $54 million worth of hockey players, literally two-thirds of the salary cap ceiling, who have yet to play a lick of hockey in a game situation. Article content

Oilers Biggest Training Camp Battles Heading Into 2022-23 Season (The Hockey Writers)

There are a number of key battles to watch as this Edmonton Oilers' preseason heavily dictates how the roster will look like.

Murray was the seventh defenceman for the Stanley Cup-winning Colorado Avalanche and was signed to a league-minimum contract ($750,000) this offseason to play the same role in Edmonton. The team is finally in a position to compete for the Stanley Cup and will make whatever moves they can to put the best team on the ice every night. He will likely be playing top minutes for the Bakersfield Condors if all goes well and be one of, if not the first, call-up if needed (from “How Edmonton Oilers’ salary cap and training camp impacts roster decisions”, The Athletic, 9/25/22). Foegele would also clear the same amount of cap space as Ryan or Janmark if he were to clear waivers and be sent down ($1.125 million). The most obvious choice is Janmark since Ryan is great on draws, solid in his own end, and can contribute on special teams. If Holloway is going to make the team, it will be on the right and most likely on the third line, as he should have a strong veteran presence in Nugent-Hopkins on his line. He dominated from his very first shift, creating an opportunity for the first goal and added one of his own in the third period. It doesn’t seem like he will get an initial look on the top line with Connor McDavid and Kane, but he will get a chance in the top-six to prove himself. Both can play centre, and one will centre the fourth line this season. He has great chemistry with Draisaitl and has typically been slotted in on the second line instead of the first. He has experience on the right wing from his time with the Carolina Hurricanes, and it could spark some more production from him this season as a result. Next, is the battle for the fourth line positions and, finally, who will be the seventh defenceman?
