Canadiens News & Rumors: Caufield, Allen, Monahan, and More (The Hockey Writers)

Cole Caufield's new contract is a priority, Jake Allen's future in Montreal is up in the air, & more as the Habs' preseason schedule begins.

With the Laval Rocket opening their American Hockey League (AHL) training camp next week and so many players still in Montreal, expect to see additional cuts over the coming days to continue trimming the roster ahead of the Canadiens’ regular season opener on Oct. During his time in Montreal, the defenceman electrified the Bell Centre with his dynamic personality and high-paced style of play. On defense, Justin Barron, Kaiden Guhle, Jordan Harris, and Arber Xhekaj are making their cases to start the regular season in the NHL as part of the Canadiens’ top-six. As for Slafkovsky, Monday will be his first game at the Bell Centre in front of his new fanbase who are excited to see him play. She has written articles for multiple tennis websites and interviewed the likes of Roger Federer and Serena Williams. With the Habs’ preseason schedule set to get underway, training camp battles are about to heat up as some of their young prospects face NHL competition for the first time. After undergoing a second hip surgery in April, Monahan continues to work his way back into game shape and has been skating in Brossard during practices but was kept out of the intrasquad scrimmages for precautionary reasons. Suzuki, who is rehabbing a lower-body injury, is skating again and is expected to return to practice next week. [Allen confirmed that contract talks](https://www.nhl.com/canadiens/video/media-op-allen/t-277625432/c-12732627) have taken place between the two parties. He said that management had discussions about the goaltender at the Trade Deadline, at the draft in Montreal, and again when it was announced that Robin Lehner would miss the entire 2022-23 season with the Vegas Golden Knights, but his asking price, which presumably is a first-round pick, was not met. If the return in a potential trade is anything less than a first-rounder, it’s probably not worth it and the Habs would be better served to bring the pending unrestricted free agent back on a new deal to help bridge the gap between Carey Price, who will not play this year, and the team’s next no. The 28-year-old centre put up 23 points in 65 games with the Calgary Flames last season.

Montreal Canadiens might keep prospect Filip Mešár away from OHL (A Winning Habit)

For Mešár, the early thoughts were that he would be best suited for the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), sending him to join the Kitchener Rangers. At least, these ...

Do not get it twisted; I do not think Mešár is not ready for a long stint with the NHL club. The 18-year-old is eligible to play for Laval Rocket after being drafted in the first round this summer, and it seems more and more likely that this will be the case. There’s a real chance that Mešár fills in for Suzuki, even if it’s not as the team’s top centre on opening night, but still joins the Habs opening night roster, then ends up in the minors upon his return. Marek mentioned that the Habs were likely to make the move to send Mešár to the OHL. It’s a song with a different tune than before, where it seemed he was headed to Kitchener. The Montreal Canadiens are expected to try and foster a culture of development during the 2022-23 season.

Devils defeat Canadiens 2-1 in First Preseason Game (All About The Jersey)

Devils hockey is finally back! Feels like forever, but here were are with the first preseason game of 2022-23 in Montreal.

The Devils challenged for offsides, and the goal was overturned, keeping the score 2-1 in favor of the Devils Johnsson was hard-working and good but not the level he was at the beginning of last year. Leave your thoughts in the comments below, and thank you for reading. Last season goaltending is what sunk the Devils from a middle of the pack team to a basement team, entirely on its own. On the power play, Filip Mesar had a one-timer right in front and Blackwood made the stop. It doesn’t mean anything, but it was fun to notice a normal NHL play in the first preseason game, with lots of prospects and AHLers, and most NHLers not trying very hard. The puck got behind the Devils defense and Blackwood made a stop on Hoffman. His offense isn’t great but it’s there, and he doesn’t look uncomfortable with the puck. Bratt made a great pass to Boqvist right off the draw and Boqvist was robbed, and then Bratt hit the post on the ensuing faceoff. Blackwood had to make some stops, but nothing too crazy, and the score remained 1-0. Later the Devils gave us an update, that he had cramps and was out for precautionary reasons. Feels like forever, but here were are with the first preseason game of 2022-23 in Montreal.
